Due to the nasty weather on Saturday, and Freighter’s play date with his sis Sunny, we decided to stick close to home this weekend.  Since we were home, we made a last minute decision to attend the Detroit Kennel Club Show.  The Chessies were scheduled to start showing first thing in the morning so we figured we could watch them and would not have to leave Freighter crated at home too long.  In past years we have entered this show, but for the last couple of years we have only attended as spectators.  This is a benched show which means that the dogs are required to be on the bench all day long.  Our dogs don’t really do well sitting around all day.  Thunder does better than Storm, but for whatever reason, he is generally out of coat when this show takes place.  It is expensive to enter, so generally we put those entry fees toward training.  🙂

This year, not only did we go to support the Chessies, but there was an additional draw because Leroy of My Brown Newfies was making his debut as a special.  The Newfs were scheduled to show at the same time as the Chessies, but due to a judge change, the Chessie time was pushed back so I was free to go over and check out the Newfs.  Leroy did great but there were a lot of Newf specials and unfortunately he did not get a ribbon.  🙁

I took some pictures, but my camera just does not take great pictures in the kind of lighting they have at Cobo.  I love pictures of dogs when they are moving, and my camera does OK in daylight, but not so well in dim light.  Mostly I get blurs.  Oh well these are some of Leroy that are passable.

Down And Back

The rings are so small at Cobo, I do not know how the handlers manage with the giant breed dogs.  It seems like they just get going and then have to turn around, or turn the corner.

Leroy Being Stacked

Leroy is one handsome fellow.  After he showed, I was able to meet Leroy and pat his head.  He was not feeling the best, Cobo can have that effect on a dog, but he was still a sweetie.  I was struck by how small my hand was on his head, how big his paws were, and his soft and silky fur.  I am used to my big Chessie Thunder, but Leroy makes him look like small.  😆  I am so glad I was able to meet him and I hope he is feeling better today.  It was also wonderful to meet his person Jen and chat a bit with the person behind the blog.  Hopefully someday soon we will run into each other again at a show, and this time Leroy will get a nice big ribbon!

  1. How nice that you were able to take in the dog show this past weekend and meet Leroy! We love Leroy and can’t imagine how huge is in person (somehow “person” doesn’t sound right lol). If he makes Thunder look small, he must be pretty big! Nice that you got to meet Jen, the face behind the blog!

  2. wow, that’s a cool day to meet the Leroy dawg… thanks for featuring him on this post; we luv visiting “My Brown Newfies” blog and he looks big in his photos… it’s nice to see him being photographed from a different perspective cuz he looks huge among people xoxox Vanilla Bean

  3. Great shots of Leroy. He’s so handsome. We’re sorry he had an upset tummy. There is NO way we could wait all day to do something with all those other doggies around us!! Looking forward to seeing the Chessy’s.

  4. Lovely pictures! Newfs have So. Much. Fur. It’s hard for me to get over it!

  5. It’s so cool you got to meet Leroy and a fellow blogger! I am definitely jealous as I’ve never met anyone from the pet blogosphere in real life. I am sure Leroy loved having you there to cheer him on. Thanks for sharing your photos! It looks like it was a fun event.

  6. Hi Y’all,

Oh so lucky to get to meet the Leroy! My Human used to have a Great Dane and has been around Irish Wolfhounds but neither have the huge bear like mass of a Newfie. She says I’m really tiny at 100 lbs compared to those dogs.

Someday maybe she’ll take me to BlogPaws and I can meet lots of my Blogville friends.

    Y’all come back now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  7. Thanks for sharing these great pictures and all the nice words about Leroy!
I had the same issue with my camera, it must be the lightning inside. Your pics are way better than mine! I have been staring at a few of them trying to analyze Leroy! Thank you!

It was so nice to meet you this weekend! Wish I wouldn’t of been picking up diarrhea though at our first meeting!
I planned on stopping by to see the Chessies show but we wound up sneaking out early since Leroy was feeling pretty blah, we almost didn’t it make it out but I convinced the security guard that if he did not let us go outside Leroy was going to make the floor very messy and stinky:)

I hope we will be able to get up to Michigan again this year and maybe see you again!

  8. Leroy is always a winner!! He doesn’t need a ribbon, we know how special he is!
    Looking forward to the Chessies!

  9. How wonderful you were able to meet Jen and Leroy! I was at the show and looked for them, but unfortunately never found them. Love the photos of Leroy – thanks for sharing! 🙂

  10. I showed animals once…ok they were rabbits…so I am familiar with judging and “the ring” or table in a bunny’s case. Seeing this brings back memories. Really cool that you got to see Leroy.
