We left our house early because the Puppy/Veteran Sweeps for the Chessies were scheduled to start at 8:45 am.  Sweeps were on time, but due to a judge change, the rest of the Chessies did not show until after 11 am.  There were only a few dogs entered in sweeps so we had a nice big gap of time.  It actually worked out because not only did I have time to meet Leroy and watch him show, (more on that here), but we also had some time to shop at the various vendors.  Our mission: something for destructo pup to chew.  More on that another time.  Unfortunately, we could not stay at the show the entire day because we have Freighter at home and he cannot last hours and hours without a potty break.  We watched the Chessies and then skedaddled.  Unfortunately, we were a little late for Freighter and he was not pleased.  Poor guy.

I took a few pictures.  Again, my camera does not do well in the lighting at Cobo.  Plus the ring the Chessies had required us to sit quite far away from the dogs.  I have found that using my zoom in the Cobo lighting also makes for blurry pictures.  As a result, many of my pictures were not very good. Sorry.

POND HOLLOW GRAND RAPIDS BUCK-Best in Sweeps and Winner's Dog

This is Millet.  Her people also have Woody, one of Freighter’s brothers.  Millet hasn’t spent a ton of time in the ring, but she and her owner/handler did a great job at a big show.

SHIAWASSEE'S MILLET FIELD MENACE JH

Storm’s breeder had several dogs entered and unfortunately, I don’t have pictures of them all.  They had a good show.

CH IRISH'S TIGRESS OF THE KNIGHT

Storm’s breeders also had a Special Dog entered on Saturday and Sunday that took a Select and a Special Bitch entered on Sunday that took Select.  On Saturday, a bitch they bred also took a Select.

It was a fun day and nice to just sit and watch the dogs.  Congratulations to all of the winners!

  1. Such lovely puppies! I honestly didn’t know chessies could come in a yellow colour! Shows how much I know of the breed eh? LOL

Poor Freighter. Kyuss had a couple accidents in his crate too in the beginning. I was always thankful I had a brown dog haha.

  2. They’re all such beautiful dogs. It makes me giggle to see such large dogs in the “Puppy” category! 🙂

  3. Poor little Freighter, I hope you made it up to him with a nice long walk. 🙂 My camera takes nice pictures close up, but when they are far away or I have to zoom, they can really come out dark At least you can see what your are even if a tiny bit blurry.

Glad you enjoyed the show and thank you for sharing!

  4. I was at the show and loved the Chessies! They are such beautiful dogs. It’s so great to read about the background of these dogs and how they did at the show – thanks for sharing!

  5. That’s the first time I have seen a light colored chessie! It sounds like your breeder did well at the show but I’m not that familiar with the bones (pun intended) of dogs shows, so I don’t really know what a sweep is and does every breed category have it’s own sweeps? I’m bet Freighter had an attitude when you got home, but I’m sure you made it up to him with some extra hugs and treats! 🙂

  6. Irish’s I’m a Knockout, reminds me a bit of Beau. Are they related?

    1. They have several dogs in common in their pedigrees. Storm’s father Ch Irish’s Mystical Merlin is in both of their pedigrees so is Ch/HRCh Irish’s Hard Chargin St Pete SH WD. There could be more.

  7. What Bassetmomma said….I’ve never seen a lighter Chessie before! I guess there’s a variation in the brown, but really, what I know about Chessies is that they can be big, they can be protective, and they can be retrievers (it’s in the name, after all)!

  8. I really love going to dog shows and watching all the dogs–What a great time, and I am like the others in not realizing that Chessie’s were also yellow. I’ve seen the bittersweet chocolate color and a bright red to chestnut shades–ALL are gorgeous in any color! 🙂

  9. I just love these dogs and I am so happy to have found your blog or I might never have had the pleasure of seeing beautiful Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. Yours are especially beautiful. I love their coats and their faces just beautiful. Hugs and nose kisses

  10. I loved shopping at this show! I came home with much more than I left with:)
I wish I could of watched the Chessies show. They are are so beautiful and I would of loved to have seen the varieties that were there.
I had the same issues with my camera. I had the zoom lens on too and almost every picture was blurry.

  11. It’s so much fun seeing some of what you experienced at the show. Thanks for sharing.
