Follow-up Friday

Once again we are joining Jodi at Heart Like A Dog for Follow-up Friday.

Jodi’s explanation:  For those new to the blog, my Follow-up Friday provides me with an opportunity to update or revise a post from the previous week.

You know sometimes you post about something and you need an update but it doesn’t warrant a whole blog.  Or sometimes someone made a comment that really resonated with you.  Yup, Follow-Up Friday baby!

Thanks To Heart Like A Dog

On Wednesday I wrote about poor pitiful Thunder.

Yes, I Am Pitiful

Finn wanted to know if Thunder had to wear the horrid cone of shame.  Unfortunately he wants to lick his cast, so yep he has to wear it when we cannot watch him.  He got a lot of experience wearing one last year so he is OK with it.  He is not happy, but he tolerates the thing.

Not This Thing Again!

lexy3587 commented that it is better to miss one season than do serious damage and miss more seasons.  That was the ortho vet’s thinking as well.  :)

snoopys@snoopysdogblog wanted to know if Thunder could get his cast signed.  I suppose so, but we haven’t done that yet.    I did request a camo colored cast but they only had white.

MyBrownNewfies commented that whenever she has had to wrap her newf Sherman’s leg he acts like it is impossible to walk.  Thunder does not seem to have that problem and has been trying to break the rules and run and jump.

Maybe it is the way the cast is put on that makes it easy for him, but then again it may be that he has had a lot of practice.  If I had a dollar for every time crazy dog has injured a front paw/leg, I would be able to afford his vet bills.  He has cracked nails so low that he had to have them removed at the vet.  He has cut pads, more than once.  This picture is from 201o when he had a particularly bad cut to his back pad and it took forever to heal.  We were wrapping his bandage in plastic for weeks and weeks.

Thunder With Yet Another Bandage

So you have to keep him out of the water huh? And next you’ll be teaching us all how to nail jelly to the ceiling! Good luck!

An apt observation Flo.

Better keep an eye on Freighter….he may just get bopped with Thunder’s cast if he’s training and Thunder isn’t

He would have to catch Freighter first.  He might get close, but I doubt it.

You Can’t Catch Me!

Thank you for all of the nice get well wishes for Thunder.  We appreciate it.  Here he is getting some TLC from his grandson Freighter.

Hope You Feel Better Soon Grandpa

Have a nice weekend!

This ‘N That Thursday–Awards Edition

This ‘N That Thursday is for those times when you want to post about unrelated topics or each topic isn’t quite long enough to make up a whole post.  It can be anything you want, so feel free to grab the button and join us!

Today I have a great blog award to acknowledge!

Sand Spring Chesapeakes, Collies Of The Meadow, Dogdaz and bumpyroadtobubba all nominated us for the Addictive Blogger Award.

Thank you all for this wonderful award.  I am going to try to follow most of the rules for this award. :)

1. Thank the giver who has bestowed on us this award

Thank you to all of the great bloggers who nominated the brown dawgs for this award!  (see above)

2. Link back to the blog(s) that awarded you

Sand Spring Chesapeakes

The web is very lucky, (yes my opinion :) ) to have several brown dawg bloggers.  If you haven’t stopped by the to say “hi” to Sand Spring Chesapeakes, you must.  If you like reading about hunt testing and puppies, well this is the blog for you!

Collies Of The Meadow

A blog about a pack of Collies and their antics.  If you like stories about collies do yourself a favor and stop over and join the fun.

Dogdaz

This blog claims to have a zoo.  Maybe they do.  :)   Stop by and see for yourself.

bumpyroadtobubba

A blog about the daily delights of a beautiful little girl and her mom.  Stop over and say “hi”.

3. Talk about why I blog and why I started blogging

I started blogging because I had something to say darn it!  :)   But seriously, we don’t have kids so we spend a lot of time with “dog people” doing “dog things”.  I figured I would share a bit about our escapades.  As I did, I found people seemed interested in learning more about the various activities we do with our dogs.  I hope that by following our journey others will feel inspired to try out all kinds of activities with their dogs.  Thanks to everyone who takes the time to stop by and read.

4. Post the Award

Done

5. Nominate 10 other bloggers for the award

This is where I never seem to follow the rules.  :)   I have updated my blogroll so please stop by and visit any of the blogs listed because they are all deserving.

I still have a couple more awards to acknowledge, but they will have to wait until next week.

Gotta Run

Pitiful

Doesn’t Thunder look pitiful?

Poor Pitiful Me

Back in July we took Thunder to the vet to have his left leg checked.  He was limping on and off and we were concerned that training and testing was further injuring it.  We are lucky because our vet has an orthopedic vet on staff.  The orthopedic vet manipulated Thunder’s leg, took x-rays of his wrist, elbow and shoulder and felt it was a soft tissue injury.  Thunder was prescribed medication which helped and that problem seems to have resolved.

Then in August he was doing some of his crazy water entries…

Fetch

…and he came up lame again.  However, this time it was his right leg.  He would limp when he first got up from rest and then it would resolve.  We cut back on his training and that seemed to help.  A couple of weeks ago he finished his medication and the limp seemed to be worse and was happening just about every time he got up and tried to walk.  I also noticed a bit of swelling around his wrist.  It was not swollen all of the time, but was there and then would go away.

Time to go visit the orthopedic vet again.  I pointed out the swelling on Thunder’s wrist and this time when the vet manipulated it he heard a little “clicking”.  The vet said it could be strained ligaments that Thunder keeps re-injuring before they get a chance to heal.  Just to make sure he took x-rays of the right wrist, elbow and shoulder.  Again the x-rays were clear: no fractures, arthritis, tears, tumors.

So that is the diagnosis: “strained ligaments”.  The vet recommended putting a cast on his leg to take the pressure off the ligaments and give them a chance to heal completely.  It is a “walking” cast so there is a bend in it, but Thunder is on limited activity and it has to be kept dry.

So yeah, waterfowl opens on Saturday and somebody is in a cast for 2-4 weeks…

Not Only Did I Have To Spend The Night At The Vet But Now You Say No Hunting For Me!

Looking Good Storm

Pictures of Storm from yesterday.  Is she pregnant?  I don’t know.  She is a bit wider but still looking good.
