This is the first Follow-up Friday Blog Hop of 2013.  I am honored that I have been asked by Heart Like A Dog to co-host the blog hop that:

Lets you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend.

Thank you Heart Like A Dog for this opportunity.

This week I just have a short follow-up on Freighter after his surgery to remove a dewclaw.  He is doing really great.  I don’t think he even missed a beat.  He has not bothered his stitches much so his cone wearing has been limited to when we are not home to watch him.

You might remember that we asked the orthopedic vet if it would be possible to do as little shaving as possible so that we could enter him in a show in a couple of weeks.  The vet did a great job and kept the shaving down to a bare minimum.

What do you think?

The only time I could get a picture was when Freighter was sleeping.  I had to use my cell phone camera because every time I got the regular camera out he popped and started moving.  This picture is from a few days ago.  The incision is healing nicely and he has finished his antibiotic.  He should get the stitches out early next week.

I also wanted to thank Freighter’s breeders for paying for his surgery.  They felt very strongly that it was their responsibility as his breeders to make sure the dewclaw was removed.  Thank you Cindy and Gary!

Have a nice weekend!

  1. Freighter’s surgery has remarkably gone well. You can barely tell he had surgery. Glad he is recovering really well 🙂

      1. Hehe, well I have no excuse I am supposed to come from the generation that grew up with this new technology, yet I’m still clueless with my phone aswell.

  2. Glad he did so well, my sister never lets things like that bother her, I, on the other hand am a complete baby even with the smallest things. By the way, I have something for you on my blog today 🙂

  3. Freighter’s incision and paw look great! I am very impressed that he is not bothering the incision!

  4. WOW I had to look real close to see the shaved area. Your vet did a real good job..
    Blessings,
    Goose

  5. Good news on Freighter! I can hardly see a shaven spot! Good breeders are great aren’t they? My breeder has done similar gestures with the Newfs and it’s a great feeling to know that there are many wonderful responsible breeders out there!

Thank you for the kinds words on Sherman today on our post about his cruciate, I have thought about you and your ortho vet during this. I may be contacting you after we take some x-rays:)

    1. It is funny, I was more concerned that they would shave a big rectangle for the IV. I figured he would have to shave more for the incision site, but he told my hubby that he thought he could get away with less.

Feel free to contact me. 🙂

  6. I’m glad that Freighter did so well with leaving his stitching alone. Both my dogs were the same way and only needed the cone when we weren’t around.

That’s a good breeder you have right there. 🙂

My dogs are the same way with the camera, as soon as they hear it come on, they look at me to see what I’m up to. Makes it darn hard to get a picture sometimes!

Thanks for co-hosting the FUF blog hop, I’m always pleased to have you along for the ride. 🙂

  7. Your vet did a great job! Glad all is healing so well.

Have a great first weekend of the New Year!

    Keep on wagging,
    Tootsie

  8. He did a great job. Honor scar it is with no issue. Do you think Gunners breeder will pay for his……LOL
Freighter is such a sweet boy and so cute.

  9. Good to know the pup is healing nicely.
Really nice of his breeders to have paid for the surgery.
    Have a nice weekend.

  10. Freighters incision looks great! Are you going to be showing him? I entered Glory in her first AKC show next weekend. Not sure how that is going to pan out but might as well give it a try. Good luck to you and Freighter. Your updates look great!

    1. Oh you are doing AKC. Very cool. Good luck to you and Glory. I bet she will do well.

Yes we have him entered in a show in a couple of weeks. His breeder/co-owner is going to show him first time out. We figure her experience will be a good thing since he may be a handful. We are also starting him in some practice conformation classes to get him used to the whole thing.

  11. Sounds like everything is going well for you and Freighter…The shaving is very minimal and the incision is healing nicely…Good news

  12. Whoa, that really was a good job by your vet. I know that it is much easier for them to just shave a big area. Takes less time for the surgery prep ect, And the breaders….that really is a good sign of reputable breeders.

Freighter, you look good. Good luck next week
    Bert

  13. Successful surgery, healing great, barely noticeable for the upcoming show, and really generous breeders! NICE!

  14. Looks like a good job on the dewclaw and glad that a vet did it.
