It’s Follow-up Friday! Jodi from Heart Like A Dog is off having fun at the Blog Paws conference and left me here to hold down the fort as co-host. I always enjoy co-hosting:
The blog hop that let’s you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend.
First, I want to apologize to those of you who tried to enter you link for This ‘N That Thursday yesterday. I checked around 2 pm and finally the linky was working. Thanks so much to those of you who came back to enter your links. If you wanted to enter your link and couldn’t, the hop will be open for a couple more days. 🙂
Follow-up Friday 5-10-13
There was some discussion in the comments about Chessie coats. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers have several coat styles and depending on where they are in the cycle of their coat, (full coat, summer coat, etc.) they may all look different. The most important thing is for Chessies to be double coated which means that you should not be able to see skin. However, when our dogs are out of coat, they will shed right down to their skin.
Here are some examples of our dog’s coats. You will notice that all of our dogs have slightly different coat styles. Thunder’s is quite short.
The next picture is Thunder at the end of his summer coat. You can see his coat is pretty smooth.
Here is a close up of Thunder’s coat when it is wet.
Storm’s coat is a bit longer than Thunder’s on her back and the sides.
The next picture is from July 2011. Quite a difference from a few months earlier.
A close up look at Storm’s coat.
Freighter’s coat is between Thunder’s and Storm’s. It is fairly long and curly on his back but short on the sides. Of course he won’t get his actual adult coat until this Fall/Winter.
Monday Mischief-Winter Again!
It was in the 40’s on Sunday and the 80’s on Wednesday. Crazy crazy Spring!
Did you catch the picture of Thunder’s handler from Sunday with winter garb on?
Bingo!
I had fun doing this. If I get my act together, I may try one for Storm and Freighter. It might be cutting it close, but maybe I can get it done.
If you haven’t played yet, check out the links on my post and try it!
That’s it for this addition of Follow-up Friday. Thanks again to Jodi for asking me to co-host.
We have a hunt test this weekend. None of our dogs are entered, but we are working the test.
Have a nice weekend!
This is a blog hop!

Great talk on coats and pictures. Mine are still blowing coat right now. Norman has thick soft wavy fur and he sheds a ton! Have a great weekend, you have to man the hunt tests? And Storm come home?
I wish I had time to dig out more pictures of coats, like that kinky thick coat which is a bit different than what our dogs have and a coat like Norman’s.
Yes Storm is coming home. We are getting her on Sunday at the hunt test. They done made me the Marshal for Juniors on Sat and Senior on Sunday (I think that is how it ended up.). LOL the power!
You get to keep everyone in line! lol….hopefully the weather will be nice. Nellie has a tight wirey coat. She doesn’t shed much. Hugs to Storm!
Wow, those photos really show it well how very different all their coats are and what amazing changes too in the summer! That’s pretty crazy! Ok, so I have a weird question…don’t be laughing at my total ignorance here but after they are totally perfect in all their training what is your ultimate goal from the training? I’m not sure if I’m really asking my question right but for example will you offer hunting trips or something for people without super trained dogs or is it just for your own enjoyment, etc. – does that make sense? Like just purely for fun or shows, a hunting business? Just curious cuz they are all so super well trained. Thanks!
Not a stupid question at all and a good topic for a post next week. 🙂
We did notice how they all looked a bit different, so nice to see these pics and have your explanation!
I really enjoyed your photos and description of the coats. My dogs pretty much look the same all year round… and Chessies remind me of my Lab, so I didn’t realize. We’ve had the same crazy weather – snow and sleet for 3 days in a row, then temps in the 80’s. Seems to have settled down now, though it is already too hot to be called spring! Have a great weekend!
We too enjoyed the pix and the explanations. I need to be clipped but as the weather won’t make up its mind yet there is still time. Have a fabulous Friday.
Best wishes Molly
Thanks for the BINGO plug! Hope you guys have a great weekend!
Really enjoyed all the pictures of the coats, and how different one dog can be from season to season . . . of course lately season to season can happen from one day to the next. 🙂 Congrats on the BINGO completion!
I just nominated you for the Dragon’s Loyalty Award today! http://nikitaland.wordpress.com/2013/05/17/dragons-loyalty-award/
That’s very interesting about the differences in their costs. Pip’s fur is different than most yorkies we have met – more curly and coarse
That’s a lot of different coat types for one breed. Does your breed profile allow their slight slope in their top line? I know poodles have to have a straight line. Also, do you see a lot of shedding with chessies (especially during coat change)? I never get the pleasure of grooming one, but I showed my friend your blog and he has peaked an interest in the breed. You can’t help but to admire them, even in a blown coat they are a gorgeous breed! 🙂
From our breed standard…”Topline should show the hindquarters to be as high as or a trifle higher than the shoulders.” So yes as high or a trifle higher than shoulders. Thunder is free stacked in that first picture. If he was hand stacked in the ring, his top line would be slightly more level, but not much.
As for shedding yes when they are blowing coat (a couple times a year) there can be a lot. With three dogs, it seems one or the other is always blowing coat…lol. Most people don’t groom Chessies so it may be a long time until you see one. The main reason is that we want to preserve the oiliness of their coat. When they are shedding, we usually try to get them out swimming and that does a good job of getting rid of excess coat.
Hi Y’all!
Hawk has a super thick wooly coat. The female we had before him had a smooth short coat with just the waves on top which became very wooly when she was wet. He sheds a great deal in the spring, not so much in the fall, but seems to shed some all the time. Our female never shed other than fall and spring when she really blew her coat.
When I picked him up I met his father…he is the image of his dad who had his American and Canadian Championships and was working through his hunt titles. His mom had her master hunt…and poor Hawk is a pet…
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
That’s quite interesting that their coat changes that much depending on the season. Also, I would have figured they would be soft based on how they look in pictures.
The coat pictures are very interesting, for sure! As you know, my humans write articles about dog information. The next dog on their list are Chessies and they will be linking to you guys so that people can see this pictures! Also, mama has a friend who wants to get a Chessie and she told her to come by and check you guys out because you post a lot about training them and it might be useful for them to know how athletic y’all are.
Do you think Chesapeake Bay Retrievers would work well for someone who lives in an apartment in downtown Nashville? We seem to see them more in open spaces, and we’re wondering for this friend. She runs and will probably take the dog running and such!
It’s funny, but I never really noticed how different Thunder and Storm and Freighter’s coats are! And that Bingo game looks really fun 😀
I think it neat that each one has there one little difference in coat. It makes the all an individual. I know they are individual in personality but the coats are extra special 🙂
Great FUF. I love that versatility about our breed and I hope as we work with all the new judges at the judges education they understand that one coat is not preferred over another as long as it is in standard.
Great FUF thanks so much for co-hosting and picking up my slack. 🙂 As always, you do a wonderful job.
I loved seeing the different photos of the coats, I’m assuming they are thicker during winter because the water is colder and the fur provides better protection?
I’m sorry you had such trouble with the linky tool, I imagine it was frustrating for you, but thankfully they got it straightened out. 🙂
Thanks again, I really appreciate you jumping in and helping me out. I’m on to Monday to see if your weekend was mischievous or not. 😉
Thanks for the nice discussion on Chessie coats. Does their coat sunburn and bleach out as with Chocolate Labs?
