Welcome to the This ‘N That Thursday blog hop!
It’s a little of this and a little of that and everything in between…
Freighter wasn’t the only one who trained last Sunday. Thunder and Storm also got some work in.
The first set-up they ran was a triple.
The marks were thrown as numbered: 1-2-3. The hill where the dead bird fell was heavy cover. There was a little ravine between the hill where the line was set and the hill where the dead bird fell. Mark #3 was thrown across the first two marks and fairly close.
Thunder was first. Even though his handler tried to get him to pick up the marks outside (#3), outside (#1), middle (#2), he picked them up in reverse order of how they fell, (#3, #2, #1). He did a very nice job on this triple.
Some pictures:
Next it was Storm’s turn. She has not been doing triples, but she has been doing fine on doubles, so we thought we would get her back in the swing.
Mark #3 was no problem. After a short hunt, she got Mark #1.
Now it was time to pick up Mark #2 which was in the pond. She headed to the pond and…..
Eventually she was handled to the mark. She has not been in the water since last Fall and swimming is not Storm’s favorite pastime so we ran Mark #2 again for her as a single. This time she had no problem getting into the water.
After we ran Freighter on Mark #1 and #2 as single marks, we moved to the other side of the pond and ran a long single that required the dogs to run a bit on land, swim the pond, exit the pond and find the bumper on a hill with heavy cover.
The set-up for Thunder and Storm was a bit different from what we did for Freighter. I hand threw the marks for Freighter just in case I needed to throw a helper bumper to get him to the area, (I didn’t). We used the winger for Thunder and Storm which meant that I was quite a distance away from where the bumpers landed and it made it more difficult for them to use me as a marker. I used a large bumper the first time they ran and we repeated it with a small bumper the second time to make it a bit more challenging.
Thunder did a nice job on this. He has had trouble with these kinds of marks, and he did need to hunt a bit, but he found both bumpers.
It was Storm’s turn. This set-up required a longer swim which we hoped she would take in stride. She did. In fact she did not hesitate to swim the pond and barely put on a hunt for the bumpers both times she ran this set-up. Nothing wrong with Storm’s marking.
Tomorrow, some follow-up.

Thunder must love all this mental excercise you give him all the time, he sure is a REAL dog! and a happy one! 🙂
Good job guys! I like how Thunder “does thins his way” 🙂
I sure enjoy your training posts! They look like a lot of fun! I get to experience it all vicariously. Thanks!
Great job guys and it looks so much like fun now the weather is kinder. Have a terrific Thursday.
Best wishes Molly
How cute is that last photo of Storm. Looks like he’s doing a hand stand 🙂
When I read your posts I know more and more that Dakota is a slacker 🙂
Great job Thunder and Storm. It seems she can jump right back into the swing, even after having babies. 🙂
Great set up and training day with great pictures. Norman was known for picking up birds in the reverse order. At hunt tests the judges would go he just mucked up my whole test and passed! LOL
That is funny. I guess Chessies have a way of doing things their own way. 🙂 Thunder went to pick up a triple outside-outside-middle last night. His handler was so confused he tried to handle him to his normal order…lol.
Great work pups! I would definitely prefer the water work part! How in the world do you create those diagrams? Can you tell me what you use as they are great!
My human mommy says she doubts that she would do as well as Thunder and Storm on that triple!
Such handsome dogs. I assume this is a good time of year for y’all?
Busy time of year for sure!
Great job all! It looks like you had quite an adventurous day. 🙂
Hi Y’all!
Storm, you’d like the waters at the shore…they’re warm! They wouldn’t chill your delicate tummy!
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
Of course the Brown Dawgs are always the stars of the show, but those tiny flowers in the water are so pretty 🙂
I am not sure what they are. The ponds have a lot of water this year so there are lots of plants in them.
Sounds like an intensive training session! I wondered how Storm would take to training after her break; sounds like she did just fine 😀
Wow you got a lot of great shots. I love your diagrams! I bet Storm is loving getting back in to training.
I just love seeing them doing this and your pictures are fabulous! !
Nice work! I’ve noticed with my guys that when they’ve decided on an order of marks, there’s no changing their minds.
Great workout everyone ! I know I shouldn’t but I like to read sometimes where the dogs make up there mind to do things their way. My girls usually always do what they are told on walks so we don’t go home, but sometimes they just don’t want to listen:-)
Wonderful pictures and narrative – I always feel as if I’m there!
