This weekend the dogs got out for a little grouse and woodcock hunting.  The weather was predicted to be sunny and dry but it was actually mostly cloudy with periods of light rain.  Rain is not the best weather for hunting grouse and woodcock.

Storm got out first and was hunting an area that is usually a pretty good one for grouse.  Storm is an excellent upland dog.  If there are birds in the area, she will find them and find them she did.  In about an hour on Saturday she flushed 5 grouse and 2 woodcock.  On Sunday she hunted the same area and flushed 2 grouse and 2 woodcock.

Storm was hunting along a ridge which leads down to a pond.

We walked along the road letting Storm pick where to enter the cover.

I stayed on the road to take pictures rather than try to follow through the cover and possibly get in the way.

The cover is still very thick which made it difficult to get off a good shot and difficult to find the birds.  Storm worked and worked to find a couple, but they must only have been winged because she could not find them. One of the woodcocks flew right over my head and it was neat to see since I had never seen one flying.  I have no pictures of the birds flying because they were too fast for me.

Hopefully the cover will start to die off and make it easier on both the dog and hunter.  Storm got pretty heated up working in all that brush.  It rained on and off for the rest of the day.  Thunder and Freighter each hunted different areas but never got into the birds.

  1. I bet stormed loved to be out hunting since she took time off to jave pups. Too bad she didn’t get any birds. Poor thunder and freighter not even seeing one. John took glory woodcock hunting too but all she got was a chase after turkeys.

  2. Storm knows her stuffs. Do the dogs ever hunt together at the same time? Thanks for being a Scooper Hero even out in the feild.
    Blessings,
    Goose

  3. Nice way of sticking the poop in there. I was wondering how it was going to fit in. I’m sure it was challenging for the dogs and hunters but it sounds like a successful hunt.

  4. Thanks for sharing the story and nice pictures of Storm. She did a good job and at the end you could tell she was ready for a nice long nap. I hope she got one. Nice job with the pictures.

  5. I bet she had a great time! So her job is to go into the brush/cover and find the birds and make them fly out so your Hubby can shoot them? Does she ever get far away from your Hubby? The reason I ask is around our parts we put the dogs in bright vests during the hunting season to make sure no-one accidentally shoots them. Is that a concern in your area?

    Good job to Storm!!

  6. Wow! There’s a lot to do when out hunting. Storm is really working it in those photos! And thank you for joining in our Scoop That Poop campaign. It is important to scoop no matter where you are…even in the woods!

  7. Hi Y’all!

Good job Storm…so sorry you didn’t get to retrieve what you flushed.

    Y’all come back now,

  8. Great job Storm! 7 grouse and 4 woodcock for one weekend sounds pretty like a pretty good hunt to to me! Great pics!
And yes, it’s important to scoop the poop, even when in the woods. Funny girl, pooping on a slope instead of flat ground.

  9. Great job, Storm! Does it make her happy to flush them out, even if she doesn’t get to find them? It looked like a good day’s work anyway, and great photos too. Hope things die off soon to make it easier for all of you.
One of the reasons I could never get interested in hunting/fishing with my hubby is too much time spent waiting around for NOTHING – LOL.

  10. Great photos… I would think that taking pictures from the road would be pretty hard, but I Like the ones where the action is blurred in the background the the foreground is leaves… it gives the whole set variety and makes the set of photos on the outing interesting 🙂 Do you usually let the dogs take their turns one at a time?

  11. Your right I bet lots of people who hunt do not clean up and thus create unsightly and icky piles all over lovely woodlands So glad you clean up

  12. I like that bridge. I never really thought about having to scoop the poop while you are out hunting. Do you think there are ever times you don’t see them do it because they are in the brush? Or are they trained not to do it while on a hunt?

  13. Great job hunting Storm. Loved all the pics…

What a cute message there at the end.

  14. Nice photos. It sounds like a good hunt even though you didn’t get anything. I’ve never hunted woodcock, but we do have a snipe season. When woodcock flush, do they fly a straight line or do they bob and weave? As small as they are, I’m sure that either way, its tough to hit them.

    1. They flew in a straight line as I watched them and really not too high off the ground. Not like the grouse that head up toward trees.. But they are fast! As I watched them I could see their round body and long beak. And as you say they are small!
