Welcome to the This ‘N That Thursday blog hop!

It’s a little of this and a little of that and everything in between…

Grab the badge and join the hop.  All are welcome!

Many thanks to my co-host Ruckus the Eskie.

Muddy

This is Thunder and Tule’s daughter Muddy with her 2013 MCBRC Duck Tournament Trophy.  Muddy has had a great year so far with over 80 retrieves for the season at the time this picture was taken.  I am sure by now, she has a bunch more.  Nice job Muddy!

Thanks to Cindy for the great picture of Muddy.

More Hunting Pictures

Here are a couple more pictures of Freighter from last weekend.  He is such a silly expressive boy.

Bloat Research

Bloat is something of concern to many dogs owners.  We have discussed it here on the blog since Thunder is a bloat survivor.  There is some exciting news about upcoming research into this terrible condition.  In October, the AKC Canine Health Foundation announced that it awarded two significant grants to fund bloat research.  According to the AKC Health Foundation’s press release:

The two grants will provide $485,000 in bloat research. The first study, headed by principal investigator Dr. Claire Rebecca Sharp, BVMS of Tufts University will evaluate the complex genetic basis of bloat. Importantly, Dr. Sharp’s grant will support the beginning of a biobank of samples that will facilitate the study of bloat by other investigators in the future. The second study, headed by principal investigator Dr. Laura L. Nelson, DVM of Michigan State University seeks to determine the abnormalities in the stomach’s ability to contract and how this might predispose large-breed dogs to bloat.

Here is a link to a video with more information on these grants.  I hope this research will lead to understanding this condition better.

The AKC Health Foundation site also has a webinar titled Bloat: What Every Dog Owner Needs To Know.  You can follow this link to watch the webinar.  The webinar has useful information about possible causes, treatments and prevention.

A Sad Farewell

Yesterday we heard the sad news that our friend JoAnn of Sand Spring Chesapeakes said good-bye to her beloved Norman, (HRCH Sand Spring Norm Of Caroway MH).  I was never lucky enough to meet Mr. Norman, but I have long admired him from afar.  I am so glad I was able to know him just a bit from all the stories and pictures JoAnn shared on her blog.

Our sincere condolences to JoAnn and all of the Sand Spring family.

Thanks for reading and participating in the hop!

  1. So sorry to hear about Norman, very sad whenever a pup has to leave us. Freighter sure does seem to enjoy being a camera guy, though, that makes it more fun.

  2. Hi Y’all,

Thanks for telling us about Norman. My Human doesn’t seem to have enough time to even let me keep my own FB page up to date, much less read any others.

Great hunting shots. Guess that was a hunt like mine are…cameras made the only shots.

My Human says to thank you for the link and news on bloat, so thank you.

    Y’all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  3. Thank you Linda! You are a dear friend and have helped me with the decision regarding Norman’s quality of life. Thanks for letting others know how special he was and will be forever. Congrats to Muddy for the cool trophy, is this a traveling trophy that gets passes around each year or does she keep it? Freighter is a handsome young man! Yeah ha to the AKC!

  4. Freighter’s expressions are GREAT! What a handsome, silly dog. 🙂

Yes, it was very sad to hear about Norman. I’m glad for him to be resting pain-free over the rainbow bridge, but hurting for JoAnn. Looking forward to seeing Norman’s handsome face for an entire month next year on my new calendar.

  5. I am glad to hear about the bloat research funding! Moses is also a bloat surviver, and as I was looking into it, I was so frustrated with the lack of confirmed information and the frequently contradictory information out there. Hopefully they’ll be able to provide some good results.

Freighter is such a ham for the camera! That second photo is hilarious.

  6. Sorry about the passing of your buddy Norman. We did not have the pleasure of knowing him. Great picture of Muddy with the amazing trophy. We like those great pictures of sweet Freighter and you are right that he is very expressive. We didn’t see that the picture of your hubby was not so good… he was being expressive right along with Freighter. Hugs and nose kisses all around

  7. I love the expressions on Freighter’s face in those photos….so cute.
Great news on the bloat research!
So sad about Norman….I had just barely started following JoAnn’s blog more closely and learned of his illness. I had hoped she’d have more time with him. It’s such a reminder that we have to cherish each and every day.

  8. I heard about Norman this morning, what a sad day for Sand Spring. My heart goes out to JoAnn and the crew.

You are right, Freighter is a hoot! I love his expressions. Sunny is so focused on watching for ducks, but Freighter sees the camera. He is just too cute for words.

And can I say how much I LOVE the name Muddy. That is the best name EVER!!

  9. Freighter’s expression is freakin’ hilarious! 😀 I’m glad to hear about the funding for bloat research. And am sorry to hear about Norman. 🙁

  10. Congrats to Muddy. Love Freighter’s expressions. He looks like a character.

So sad about Norman. I have been there losing a heart-dog to bone cancer so it makes me double-y sad, thinking of my own girl and knowing how much JoAnn will miss him.

  11. I’m sorry to hear about Norman, it’s never easy. Enjoyed your pictures.

  12. Thanks for sharing about Norman! I have been seeing him throughout all the other blogs and can tell him and his sapiens were well known to the blogging community.
