Pheasant Hunt Part 3

I left off yesterday with Freighter not finding any birds and us running out of time to find the last three birds. (Read the first part here and the second part here.)  Time to get out our two experienced hunters and turn them loose.

Thunder and Storm hunt very nicely together.  They have done it many times so it is second nature.

Some of the birds were running so they were trying to chase the scent.

We went back over the area Freighter had hunted just because we suspected there was a bird or two there.  Freighter was probably moving too fast over that thick grass to find them.

Lo and behold Thunder found a dead hen.  It was the hen that seemed to get away earlier that morning.  When you are hunting with Thunder, you rarely lose a bird because he will normally find them.  He really is a fabulous hunting dog.

What surprised us was that it ended up clear across the field from where Thunder had flushed it and in the opposite direction of where it was last headed if you watched the video.  The guy who runs the preserve told us that many birds head over to the deep grass, and I guess this bird was no exception.

We continued to hunt that grassy area and Thunder found a rooster.  It was buried deep in the grass and would not flush.  Thunder tried to get it to fly but it wasn’t cooperating.  Storm figured what the heck.  She pushed her way in, grabbed the bird, and brought hubby a live pheasant.  Many dogs won’t pick up a live pheasant because they can be kind of mean and have sharp claws, but you don’t mess around with Storm.  I don’t have any pictures, but it was quite funny as the bird was flapping away while she was retrieving it.

Storm did have one more flush, but the bird was too far away to get a good shot.  Our time was up and we were freezing so it was time to call it a day.

The dogs ended up finding 7 of the 8 birds and 5 in the bag.  Not a  bad day at all.

This weekend is our last hunting weekend.  Hubby is trying for a deer during muzzle-loading season.  Once hunting season is over, I should have some time to relax and catch up.

Have a nice weekend!

  1. That’s the first time I’ve ever seem two of the dogs hunt together. Thought it would be dangerous and one might be in line of fire. But it looks like Thunder and Storm know each other well enough to work in together close and get their bird!! Good job guys ( guys being everyone dogs and shooter) 🙂

  2. Great post and pictures. Norman would find all the dead birds even ones from prior hunts days before. Once he found a frozen one and he carried it back to the shelter area with pride. He and gambler will pick up live ones then they crunch them…glory is like freighter and not to sure on things yet. Have a great weekend.

  3. Great birds and good job Thunder and Storm. We couldn’t help but giggle when we read about Storm bringing the live bird. She was going to get a bird or else. lol Too cute and funny. Hugs and nose kisses

  4. It’s great that they can hunt together. Storm is one tough cookie – no bird should try to mess with Storm, they can’t outwit or outlast her! Have a great weekend.

  5. Hi Y’all!

Have a fabulous hunt this weekend!

    Y’all come by now,

  6. Sounds like a great day! It must be a little sad when you know it’s the last one for the season. Loved the story about Storm….she must have been impatient and knew you were cold and it was time to get this done! LOL

  7. I can’t believe I didn’t comment on this!! First and foremost thank you for joining the blog hop! I sure appreciate your support. Secondly I laughed out loud about Storm, I so remember her tackling that Canadian Goose and so I’m not surprised that she wanted the bird and will do whatever she could to get it. Even though I’ve never met her, I really love that dog! Thanks for the great chuckle this morning!!
