We have been trying to let Freighter spend more time outside in his kennel.  It has been a slow process.

We wanted to make sure he wouldn’t bark, or howl, or whine while outside because we don’t need to disturb our neighbors.

We started by putting him outside when we could be nearby doing yard work.  Gradually we increased the time that he was in the kennel until he could be out there without us being in the yard with him.

Hanging Out
Hanging Out

Then we started leaving him alone for short stretches.  We asked our neighbors if he was vocal and they assured us that his barking was infrequent and usually only if there was someone around who normally wouldn’t be there.

Then we had a cold snap so we couldn’t leave him out at all while we had single digit temperatures.

The weather warmed up a bit and all was going well until…

Crunch, Crunch
Crunch, Crunch
Yikes!
Yikes!

Last Friday, I put him outside and was puttering around in the front of the house when I heard what sounded like wood splintering.  I went around to the kennel to check it out and Freighter had pulled off a long strip of wood and was preparing to make a snack of it!

Back to the drawing board.

Who Me?
Who? Me?  (Notice the black Kong available for chewing.  Guess the house is tastier.)

  1. LOL that was some chomping going on in there. Good luck with the training. Onwards and upwards.
    Have a marvellous Monday.
    Best wishes Molly

  2. Too funny…they never go for the toy do they? Why are you kenneling him outside? Is this for his field work? How does he do in a regular crate inside? I am starting to train mine in field/hunt and was curious about the outdoor kennel.

    1. We kennel outside for part of the day. Mostly they are inside, but it does help with coat and gives them a nice change of scenery. We plan to show him this year so he needs a coat and it helps for hunting season as well. He is fine inside in a crate, but don’t leave anything chewable close by. 🙂

  3. Oh boy! We watched the dogs behind us destroy the entire roof in their doghouse in their kennel, shred a big fluffy bed they had in their kennel and tip over a full swimming pool about five minutes after the owners left. I guess Freighter has other plans for the kennel? Good luck, it sounds like it will be a match of intellect.

  4. My Rottie puppy ate my deck. Those big, chewy boys! Some of the treated wood is toxic. I hope he finds a better outlet for his frustrations!

  5. Despite the wide range available to me, wood will always be my favourite too.

  6. Lol! Maybe he’s just trying to appreciate craftsmanship in a new way? I can’t imagine wood would be very fun to chew on, but Moses loves to disintegrate giant sticks too. Luckily he tends to stay away from treated wood – prefers it au natural, I guess.

  7. Boys will be boys. Shame, shame, Freighter, but understandable. Maya loves to chew on wood too. What is it about wood that makes it so fun to chew?

  8. Oh Freighter…you better be careful…splinters in the mouth are no fun!

  9. LOL!!! To funny!!
Oh Freighter, I agree with Donna and the Dogs….You better be careful cause splinters in the mouth hurt like heck LOL!
    Siamese smothers of purrs

  10. Oh Freighter, the Kong is far better, but Delilah and Sampson both chew on wood. Maybe it’s his way of telling you he’s an inside dawg. 🙂

  11. Maybe Freighter thought it was like a gingerbread house? 🙂

    Happy New Year to all,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂
