I have been trying to challenge myself when it comes to my photography.  I find it easiest to take pictures on a slightly overcast day.  When it is bright and sunny and there is shade and long shadows, or when it is a dark cloudy day, I have trouble getting shots that I like.  They turn out too bright or too dark and I have to spend a lot of time editing them.  I have been reading a couple of books and experimenting with the settings on my cameras to see if I can get better pictures even in difficult lighting.

Yesterday we had another full-blown snowstorm and it was completely overcast.  Pictures can be difficult because you have the movement of the snow and then if the subject is moving, it can turn into one dark blur.  My DSLR camera could do a decent job, but I don’t dare take it out in a snowstorm.  Besides, these conditions are made to order for a waterproof camera.  I decided to bundle up and try my luck with Storm and Freighter as my subjects.

Storm was the first one out.  It was snowing pretty hard.

Next I brought out Freighter, but it started to snow harder and the wind was really blowing.  It was difficult to take a lot of pictures.

I was pretty happy with the way all of these pictures turned out, but truly I have had enough practice taking pictures in the snow!

  1. You pix are great but we have to say they make us feel cold. Love the fact that The Brown Dogs are having a blast in the white stuff. Have a tremendous Thursday and stay warm and safe.
    Best wishes Molly

  3. Snow is one problem I won’t have over there. But you have some good shots out of the set 🙂 Stay warm and cosy and have a good weekend coming up!

  4. Hi Y’all!

I have just one question, how do y’all keep your feet and teeth from freezing so bad they hurt?

    Y’all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  5. They came out really well. I like the second one, it looks a bit like some dog got into paint, not snow! We love the snow and would love some more, so send it back this way if you like. Is your husband still enjoying the plowing work 😉

  6. This is a great series of photos and your captions are perfect descriptions. I wanted to join the blog hop today but I have massive amounts of things to do today and tomorrow prepping for a party here tomorrow night (I always seem to wait until the last minute no matter how much I swear I won’t!), so I’ll try to join in again next week. We’re expecting more snow here Saturday night!

    1. No worries…hops are supposed to be fun and not cause stress. We are here every week. 🙂 We got a couple of more inches last night…ugg.

  7. I love how they all come out- but I always enjoy your photos. You’re very talented!
Tell Freighter that Toby is a snow eater too…but he’ll eat it till he pukes, so we have to stop him. LOL!

    1. I bet Freighter would eat snow until he pukes too…lol. We stop him when we see him eating too. Thanks for the compliment on my pictures. 🙂

  8. Great photos!! While flipping through the settings on my camera I found some totally new options, I just don’t know how to get back there. 😉 I suppose I should throw the disc with the manual onto my computer and try to figure it out.

Hope you get a nice break in the weather this weekend!! I really love this hop, thanks for co-hosting with me.

    1. I used manual settings for these pictures. I always forget all the others that are preset. I need to play with those too.

  9. You did a fabulous job on your pictures. I hate it when the snow whips me in the face when taking pictures. The dogs look like they are having fun and I just love the softness of Freighters face on the head shot, he looks like a gentle soul, Glory has that same look, maybe it is a young dog look. Have a great day.

    1. I bet it is the young dog look because there are times when Freighter is far from gentle…lol. He can be a wild thing. 🙂

  10. LOVE that second shot of Storm! So cute with the head tilt!
And Freighter looks so mature in that last shot!
Dark dogs in white snow makes for tough photography (especially if it’s sunny), but it’s worked out – the waterproof camera was a good choice!

    1. Storm does that head tilt al of the time, but on her own terms. You can’t ask for it, you have to catch it…lol.

  11. The close ups are amazing! And so is your snow. 🙂 We just got a dusting this morning. Wishing for more, but knowing it won’t happen. Enjoy it for us!

  12. Perhaps Freighter was hiding the Kong in the snow so Storm would have a more difficult time finding it!

  13. They are so adorable! I really love watching dogs play in the snow. I had to start making Pierson wear the Pawz shoes because he was getting iceballs between his toes. He was so busy playing in the snow that he didn’t even care about the shoes. 🙂

    1. Those ice balls between the toes can be rough. Luckily Chessies don’t have a lot of hair in between their toes. Our Golden used to get ice balls all the time. We would have to pick them out. They didn’t have Pawz back then. 🙂

  14. haha! I’ve been trying to practice snow pictures too! It’s hard to take pictures when its snowing! I keep getting the little blur blobs and it ruins the picture. This week I’ve been working on taking pictures inside which is something I normally totally stay away from but I’m really starting to learn about the natural light in my house!

    1. I struggle with inside pictures. The cabin has much better light than out house because it has skylights. I have been slowing the speed down so that at least I get defined snow, if that makes sense. Of course too much and the pictures are blurred. 🙂

  15. way to not let the snow stop you. I need to download the manual for my Olympus Tough waterproof camera so I can learn how to push it limits. The silly people didn’t make an actual manual, which some people (like me) actually do like to read. Overall the little tough cameras will never be able to compare much to a good DSLR camera (one of my peeves actually, the lack of quality in most)

But in anycase, when I want to shoot in the snow I often drape a dish towel over the body of the DSLR to keep some of the snow off. They actually sell “raincoats” for DSLR that cover everything except end of lens and back of camera so it makes the body a lot more protected. One day I will get around to ordering one.

Hope you keep having fun with photography, I enjoy your photos.

  16. Adorable pics! I love the one when Freighters tongue is sticking out LOL!
Next Thursday I will try to link up with you all!
–Siamese Smothers frem me and Mikko–

    1. That is for sure. The waterproof camera is freeze proof to very cold temperatures. I have been able to test it this year…lol.

  17. I think you did great. First of all, by even getting out there in a snowstorm with a camera! I like how the photos show the movement of the snow where the dogs are the background for it. My favorite though is of Freighter with his tongue sticking out!

  18. What fabulous pictures!! They are having themselves such a good time and they were keeping warm while you were freezing. These pictures were worth what you went through though to capture such wonderful action. Love the facial expressions in all the close-ups. Great captures!! Hugs and nose kisses

    1. Thanks Mag. They just love to run around in the snow. My fingers were getting cold trying to push the shutter on the camera…lol.
