This past week was a week of meeting up with old and new pals.

One of the dogs at group training last Saturday was a 13 year old Chessie named Cleo.  The first time we met Cleo was about seven or so years ago when Thunder was a young dog running a Working Dog stake.  At that time, Cleo was running the Working Dog Excellent stake.  Even at 13, she still loves to retrieve.  Nice work Cleo!

Then at Monday’s conformation class we had the pleasure of meeting a fellow blogger.  Gvannini from How I Adopted Your Brother was there with Asta, an Icelandic Sheepdog.  There is a big show this weekend, so we are all practicing for it.  Asta is adorable and did great.  It was very nice to finally meet them in person.  If you don’t know Gvannini, stop over and say “hi”!

I was able to get a few pictures, but taking pictures of a smaller dog through the fencing was not an easy task.

Yesterday I posted a picture of Freighter’s sister Sunny and Freighter in the ring.  Some readers commented that Sunny looked a lot lighter than Freighter.  Your eyes are not tricking you, Sunny is lighter than Freighter.  Freighter was the darkest male in the litter.  There was one dark female, and all the rest of the pups were lighter in color.  That is not uncommon with Chessie litters.

This is the color section of the Chessie standard.  With Chessies any color brown is acceptable.

The color of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever must be as nearly that of its working surroundings as possible. Any color of brown, sedge or deadgrass is acceptable, self-colored Chesapeakes being preferred. One color is not to be preferred over another. A white spot on the breast, belly, toes, or back of the feet (immediately above the large pad) is permissible, but the smaller the spot the better, solid colored preferred. The color of the coat and its texture must be given every consideration when judging on the bench or in the ring. Honorable scars are not to be penalized.

Disqualifications: Black colored; white on any part of the body except breast, belly, toes, or back of feet must be disqualified

As I mentioned, this weekend is a big show.  I was surprised that our class wasn’t more crowded.  Fewer people in the class means a lot of time to practice moving around the ring.

The handlers were pretty pooped by the end of class.

If you are keeping track in the weather department, we had a string of three absolutely beautiful days.  But the weather is fickle.  We might get freezing rain this morning!

This is the Thursday Bark And Bytes Blog Hop hosted by 2 Brown Dawgs and Heart Like A Dog.

The Barks And Bytes hop is for anything at all and all bloggers are welcome.  You don’t have to be a dog blog to join the hop.  Give it a try and join the hop!

  1. Freezing rain sounds like a good excuse to stay cosy indoors. I just assumed the chessies are totally brown dogs without white spots 😀 … but it’s interesting to realise that they need to be camouflage dogs 😛 and how exciting to meet Gvannini!! That’s cool ^__^

  2. Nice meet and greet this week. We so hope mother nature behaves herself and your good weather continues. Have a tremendous Thursday.
    Best wishes Molly

  3. You’ve sent me off on a head trip (and I know have a note to do some “googling”) about color. Have you see many Chessies that are black? or with lots of white?

Hope that freezing rain does not materialize. It’s been rain and storms for us all week and the dogs are truly sick of it.

    1. Lots of white, yes. They may be mis-marked. Still a Chessie, but you would not want to breed them. Black no. Black would usually indicate a mix with something.

  4. Hi Y’all!

Freezing rain? Uh oh…it’s hard to realize some people still have snow and cold and stuff like freezing rain when temperatures the last few days here have been in the upper 80’s.

Y’all are so lucky to keep meeting fellow Blogville friends. We don’t know anyone close to us. Heck, we don’t even have a training class closer than an hour and a half drive.

    Y’all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  5. Cleo sure is looking fit and fine – never would have guessed 13!
Freighter looks ready to clean up some ribbons 🙂

  6. Freighter is so beautiful! I love seeing all the photographs of them working so hard, but they look like they are having a lot of fun too! Your weather is exactly the same as ours! A few nice days and rain is coming today. Heard something about snow next week too. Ug. I want to wear my flip flops outside and can’t – very upset with that! LOL

  7. Thanks for the photos, she doesn’t look half bad! Good luck this weekend and I hope I’ll get the chance to see you show! 🙂

  8. Looking good! I’m always surprised at how fit the human needs to be for “dog” sports.

  9. Not all of the dogs in class are brown dawgs, huh? I love the color difference in the Chessies. And I love that they’re still all brown. Gorgeous, hard working dogs. 🙂

  10. Asta is a pretty little dog. That is a great picture you got of her. That is great that Cleo still loves to retrieve at age 13, she looks good too. Freighter and Sunny both look fantastic. Hope that freezing rain doesn’t show up. Our weather is fickle also, we have thunderstorms and tornado watches today. Hugs and nose kisses

  11. How fun to meet another blogger at class! Good luck at the show this weekend. We just got about six inches of heavy wet snow overnight…it will melt fast, but what a mess!

  12. Asta looks much smaller than I expected her to. 🙂 Glad you got some good ring time in and can’t wait to hear how the show goes. I do hope the weather held off. We get a couple of really nice days, then it turns cold. Lather, rinse, repeat. 🙂

    Good luck this weekend.

  13. I hope the weather hasn’t messed with you getting to the show.
What fun to meet up with old friends (that Cleo looks great for her age!) and fellow bloggers.

  14. I’m pretty sure no matter what shade of brown, Chessies are simply handsome pups! Good luck this weekend!! Much love, The Scottie Mom.

  15. Those kind of reunions are fun and it’s nice to see a senior like Cleo still able to do her thing. Good luck with this weekend’s show!
