Last week was a strange week.

On Monday we had torrential rain.  Some areas got 6 inches in the span of a couple of hours.  Many of the freeways flooded.  Many people’s basements flooded.  Maybe you saw it on the news?

The detention area behind our house normally looks like this:

Monday night it looked like this:

When we saw all of the water including our flooded street, we thought we might have a flood in our basement.  Luckily we did not.  I think that detention area saved us.

Other people were not as lucky.  I feel terrible for those who had flooded basements.  All last week they were stacking the contents of their basements by the curb for trash removal.

I also mentioned that the freeways all flooded.  They were impassable and many people had to abandon their cars.  Many people had to abandon cars on the surface roads too.  All week long they were towing abandoned cars from the freeways and roads.  It really was something.

Closed freeways meant that traffic was a nightmare for a few days.  I spent a lot of time in gridlock.

We had the heavy rain on Monday and then more rain on Tuesday.  I think Storm got out one day last week to train.  It must have been all she needed though since she did such a good job on the test.

She is such a silly girl.  After her big hunt test weekend, all she wanted to do was to play with her Kong.  The first thing she did was to fish it out of her kennel so I could toss it a few times.

We brought Freighter along to the test on Saturday.  Sometimes they need a dog who is not entered to retrieve birds that are thrown when they set-up the test or to retrieve water marks if the running dog is out.

Freighter got his chance to work as a set-up dog, but he was so nuts for the birds that he was put up fast.  We have a lot of work to do on his obedience.

Sunday Thunder got to come along.  He did a good job retrieving the set-up marks and had some fun too.  He loves his ducks but has outgrown the crazy phase.

Working a test makes for a long tiring weekend.  (I am just now starting to recover.)  I was the Marshall at the Senior stake both days.  The Marshall’s job is to check in the dogs and set the running order.  The Marshall is also responsible for the making sure people park in the right areas, and the gallery sits in the right area, and that no one disturb the test.  But really, setting the running order and keeping the test moving are the most important jobs the Marshall has.  I had some handlers who needed a lot of wrangling to keep them in order.  They tired me out.  🙂  But on the whole it was a fun weekend.  I worked with some great people which made it fun.  I think it also helped that the weather was not blazing hot.

I also got this adorable video of a Golden puppy discovering the duck crates.

This is the Thursday Bark And Bytes Blog Hop hosted by 2 Brown Dawgs and Heart Like A Dog.

  1. Wow we saw some footage of the rain and gosh there was a lot of it. Here it has been well cooler all week which made a nice change from the hot weather we have had since May. Love the video of the cute pup with the crate of ducks. Have a tremendous Thursday.
    Best wishes Molly

  2. Those are some beautiful photos running through the wildflowers. Horrible about all the flooding, but good thing you didn’t suffer any damage.

  3. Sometimes a little less training in the days before a test is a good thing. In any case, she did a great job!

  4. Hi Y’all!

Oh dear, it seems Mother Nature has been dumping inordinate amounts of rain everywhere in the Eastern half of the country. Sounds like your part of the country got the worst of it this go ’round.

That was an amazing setting for photographs of a hunt of any kind, “test or no”.

Seems like we Chessies are often exuberant “in our youth”, which, to listen to my Human Papa, lasted until recently. Hope you settle down soon, Freighter.

    Y’all come by now,

  5. Looks like y’all had fun at the hunt test!! Love the video of the Golden puppy checking out the duck crates! He is sooooo cute! (I LOVE Goldens – young, old, and anywhere in between! Can you tell? Hehe). My birthplace (Long Island, NY) had flash floods all over the place last week, too. Glad I don’t live up there any more!

  6. Wow! That’s a lot of water! I’m glad Storm did a great job despite only getting a little bit of training, maybe it’s like when you’re studying for the SAT and they tell you not to worry about it the night before! That golden puppy is adorable–thanks for sharing!

  7. Such weird weather all over. I’m glad Storm did well! And that puppy is adorable. 🙂 We’re hoping all the precipitation holds on through winter, translating into snow for us.

  8. Wow, I’m glad your basement was spared from the flooding! Great photos of your dogs and I love the video of the golden retriever puppy with the duck crate! I could just imagine my golden doing the same when she was a puppy. So cute!

  9. Oh man, that’s a lot of water. I’m so glad you didn’t have a flooded basement. So sad for those who did. 🙁 The photos are awesome. Cool that you got to be the Marshall but man, that’s a lot of stuff to keep straight. I know what you mean about the handlers. It’s the same way in the show ring. Gah. Some of the people can be so tiring. Glad it was a good test!

  10. Wow – that’s a crazy amount of water. Can’t believe you suddenly had a new lake out back. We never see that kind of rain here (in So Cal). Crazy how some places get way too much and we can’t get hardly any.

I wouldn’t be able to resist that face for sure!

  11. I’m so glad you at least avoided the flooded basement with all that rain. We got some of it here, but it didn’t cause too many problems and there was only one day that really kept us inside.
Sometimes things that are fun can be totally exhausting too! We just spent 3 days with our 3 year old and 3 month old grandsons and traveling back and forth and we were completely worn out!

  12. I’m so sorry to read about the flooding!! That sounds terrible!

You’ve got some good looking dogs!! They look so happy doing their job!

  13. i am so thankful that you didn’t have any flooding in your home. That is such a frightening sight on the news. Take care and congratulations on the successful weekend. The Golden and the duck box is adorable. ♥

  14. We have had storms all week, usually at night so I have to sit up with Mica. Thursday it rained all day and today when I took Aspen out to go potty it was a steam bath. Within minutes I was soaked with sweat. The creek is probably up but it has been too hot and Rainey to go see. Many places were flooded sorry you have had the same awful weather 🙁

  15. That’s a lot of rain sure glad yr basement is ok. Freighter the duckalcohlic that is funny. It’s better to have to much drive for ducks than not enough. Just have to learn how to control it.

  16. Cute video! We’ve had some flooding as well, and after a couple of weeks of rain, a lot of the crops are ruined. We’re getting into a warm drying trend, hopefully you are as well.
