Our plan for our long weekend was simple.  The well company was going to drill the new well on Thursday and Friday which would leave Saturday open for hunting.

Grouse opened Monday (September 15th), but Woodcock would not be open until Saturday (September 20).  Since we are just as likely to see Woodcock as Grouse in the forest where the brown dawgs hunt, it was a perfect plan.

Except things did not go as planned.

The well company got hung up on a job so they had to delay our job until Friday.  This meant that they would be working on the well on Friday and Saturday and it would be difficult to get out to hunt either of those days.

No problem.  The weather was really nice on Thursday.  It was cool and dry and a beautiful day to get out in the forest to do some hunting.

Storm went first.  She flushed two Woodcock and no Grouse.  Bummer.  Woodcock is not open yet.  No shots.  No retrieves.

Thunder went second.  He flushed one Grouse and two Woodcock.  The Grouse was low and close so there was not a safe shot.  The Woodcock were perfect flushes and would have been easy shots…but…Woodcock was not in season yet.  No shots.  No retrieves.

Thunder stood there looking at hubby as if to say: “Why didn’t you shoot them dude?”

I guess dogs don’t understand things like hunting seasons.

Freighter went last and I tagged along to take some pictures.  I will post them on Friday.

  1. It is confusing when the dog part of the team does a perfect job and the human appears to fail 😉

  2. “Aw, that’s not fair Dad!” Poor dawgs just don’t understand. Do they even know the difference between woodcock and grouse? I don’t.

  3. Things never work out according to plan! Looking forward to seeing those pics on Friday. Really enjoyed reading this post:)

  4. I can understand how confusing that must be for the dogs, but I have to say I found the pictures and captions really funny and so perfect together. I can only imagine what was running through their heads!

  5. Well, they did their job…so they don’t understand why hubby didn’t do his. BOL I hope when Woodcock opens they don’t just flush out Grouse. How crazy would that be?!?

  6. That must be pretty confusing to them lol, I never thought about it. They must think you really lost your mind, they were right there!

  7. Hi Y’all!

You are so right we don’t understand! A lot of things you humans do!

    Y’all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  8. Oh, the dreaded “best laid plans” …..the poor dogs are like “what the heck?” “hunting season?”….what does that mean…I flushed the bird! Hopefully you can make up for it soon. 🙂

  9. The look on sweet Thunder’s face is for sure a puzzled look. Don’t you wish we could somehow explain things to them. Great pictures! Hugs and nose kisses

  10. Don’t they give you that puzzled “What the…?” look when you don’t do what they expect, like shooting and missing or not shooting altogether? Good thing they can’t talk or they’d lay a guilt trip on us.
