Saturday we went to visit Thunder and Freighter’s breeders who have a home and property not too far from our cabin. Their house overlooks this beautiful pond.  The colors are a bit past peak, but still really pretty.

We took a little walk around their property and Freighter tagged along.

He had a blast running all over, sniffing all the smells, and jumping over logs.

He is such a good boy when you are walking in the woods because he checks in often and will come right back if you call.  Of course he did not come across any birds or it could have been a whole different story.

Thunder was a happy boy because he got to play with his true love Tule.  They had a blast.  I will have those pictures on Friday.

It was a nice visit with a yummy lunch included.  Thanks Cindy and Gary for your hospitality!

We hoped to check out some state land up that direction and maybe do some grouse hunting, but the weather was cold, damp and windy…again.  Not good for grouse.  The weather for grouse hunting sure has been a bust this season.

Before we left for our visit, Hubby and Thunder went down to the river to do a little wood duck hunting.  They only saw three wood ducks and they were flying high up heading south.  I think they have migrated out of our area which makes sense because many of the trees have lost their leaves.

They also walked through the area where they normally find woodcock.  They didn’t have any flushes.  The season is open until November 3rd, but we think they have already migrated through our area.  The activity maps have not shown peak migration yet, but the dogs had some flushes the last weekend of September and the first weekend of October and not much since.  It seems like many birds are migrating though our area early this year.  That may explain why there were so few wood ducks around too.

If you haven’t entered our give away for the Full Moon made in the USA Chicken Jerky gift pack, the give-away is open until Wednesday.  It is easy to enter.  Just leave a comment on the post, here.

  1. Well, we’ve seen some snowflakes mixed with rain this past week…every-critter who can is heading south it seems.

    1. Snowflakes! Yikes! I think winter may come early this year.

  2. What a beautiful photo with the trees reflecting in the pond! Too bad hunting is not real good for you this fall, but at least you are out enjoying nature a bit.

  3. Great that you got to spend some time with friends, and that the doggies had fun despite the hunting bust. Have a great week!

  4. Those are some beautiful photos! It would be great to be able to meet up with Mauja and Atka’s breeder. We just send lots of pictures 🙂

  5. my mom was drooling as she saw the lake and imagined to have such a view :o) I’m more for the wood ducks, how bad that you had no luck. but it’s a beautiful place and I enjoyed it with you :o)

  6. It’s been so cold and rainy this October most of the leaves are just winding up on the ground. It looked like a beautiful place to explore 🙂

  7. Hi Y’all!

Too bad y’all had such miserable weather. Maybe there are more wood ducks comin’. We haven’t seen any yet, A few pheasant, but my Human’s a “slow draw” with the camera lots of times.

    Y’all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  8. It seems like this fall has been colder than usual overall, so maybe that’s why some of the birds are leaving earlier? We had a warm spell but it didn’t last long and now it’s just been rainy and dreary for days. Glad you had a nice visit with your friends!

  9. Maples here more red than usual! And no sounds of shotgun blasts from the Maumee in the early morning. A bit of a different Fall. Pics of Freighter are happy ones, free rein in the woods, with leaping and sniffing, must be Chessie heaven.
