Freighter did such a good job on our last two pheasant hunts that he graduated to the number 3 spot.  He was the last dog to take the field during our hunt last Friday.  You might be wondering how going last is graduating.  Typically the last dog has a more difficult hunt because the birds have scattered and are well hidden in the cover.  In fact last year when Freighter drew the third spot at a hunt, he was skunked and had no flushes.

But that was last year.

Thunder and Storm hunted the front and middle part of the field so Freighter got to hunt the back part near the pond.  It was a long walk from the truck.

It wasn’t long before Freighter had his first flush.

Freighter did an excellent job.  He is turning into a great hunting partner.  I like that he stays close and gets his birds up in the air.  It makes it much easier to take pictures.

After Freighter’s fourth bird, hubby wanted to head back to the truck and get Thunder and Storm out to hunt together.  Thunder will be 9 in March and Storm is 7 1/2 so who knows how long they will be able to hunt as a brace.  I would have stayed and hunted more with Freighter.  It was a long walk back.  Hubby won so that is what we did and I will have those pictures on Friday.

  1. Wow Freighter that was a very successful day! Can you come over to get some of our pheasants? They currently walk on our roads and we have to drive careful. No idea why they do that, we were puzzled as we saw that flock of birds on the road :o)

    1. If he washes out of hunt tests, at least we know he can hunt…lol.

  2. Great job Freighter. I saw your comment to Martha Anne. I think some dogs just do better at some things than others, I don’t think that’s bad. (But that’s me) I love the photos. He looks like he’s in his element.

  3. Freighter!! Gread job, and you seem to have a smile on your face!! Now, the important question, how does your pawrents prepare those birds AND do you get any??

-Otto, whose favorite question is retrieve??????

  4. A little maturity can go a long way. With that post title I felt like it should be a football post, but I knew it would be hunting 😉

  5. Freighter, sounds like you did an excellent job flushing and retrieving. I’m sure Mom And Dad were very proud of your day’s work:)

  6. WAY TO GO FREIGHTER!!!! Excellent job! Great pix, too, Mom!!
