Freighter will be competing in some dog shows this winter.  We like to show our dogs in field condition. We condition them by continuing our field training all winter and by getting them out for runs.

We have set a goal for Freighter’s activity, but how can we know that he is consistently meeting this goal?

One way to keep track is with the Whistle activity monitor.  The Whistle activity monitor is small and fits on your dog’s collar.  It monitors the time the dog has spent being active and the intensity of the activity.

One day last month we took Freighter for a run near our cabin. He had a great time sniffing, marking (he is a boy dog through and through), running on the road and through the cover.  This road is not well-traveled so we did not have to worry about cars and he could have some freedom to run.

On this particular day Freighter wore his Whistle only while he was out running.  This is a capture of his screen for that day.  As you can see he was active for 47 minutes and it was fairly intense (as indicated by the spikes in the graph).

Freighter was happy and tired after his outing and we were pleased because he met his activity goal of at least 30 minutes of intense activity that day.

Does the Whistle sound like something you might like to use with your dog?

You are in luck because we are having a give-away this week.  You can learn about the Whistle, our give-away, and about all of its cool features here and here.  I am also including the give-away details at the end of this post.

Now I will be honest that this week has been a bust.  We have had dangerous wind chills all week.  It has not been possible to spend much time outside.  It is January but a bit of temperature moderation would be nice.  The dogs are getting a bit slap happy.

Here is a video of silly Storm from Instagram refusing to come inside and making her own fun!

Or click here for the video or follow us at:  instagram.com/2browndawgs

If you would like your very own Whistle activity monitor here are the details:

Whistle Activity Monitor

The give-away is being conducted entirely on the  @WhistleLabs Instagram page.  It will be open through Sunday January 11, 2015.  Sorry but it is open to US residents only.

Here is how you can enter:

  1. Follow @WhistleLabs on Instagram
  2. Like 5 of their photos
  3. Leave a comment saying you came from @2browndawgs’s blog

Each step is important, but number 3 is very important because the people at Whistle are selecting the winner.  They will not know you want to be entered if you do not leave a comment indicating that we sent you.

Remember the give-away will end Sunday and the people at Whistle will be picking the winner.

Have a nice weekend!

  1. HAHAHAHA! I like that “Too cold for YOU, maybe” look Storm is giving you! I had a bearded collie that we would literally have to DRAG inside on cold days. I know in theory he had the undercoat to handle the cold weather, in addition to many hiding places where he could get warm, but I couldn’t let him do it.

Freighter has the most charming expression! I hope 2015 is his year to finish!

  2. Since we are cold bound, I just might venture into entering the contest. It would be a first for Instagram! Because of the extreme cold, some of the local deer population have moved into town, at midnight Erynn, from a second story window, started her “the space invaders have arrived!” John could see nothing. Insisting they needed to go outside for yard patrol, they raced downstairs and to the back door. Then came the stiff legged, tail rigid, patrol our space.
Before too long, John saw a trail of deer, backlit in the neighbor’s alley
Did Little Girl hear them ~ the frigid night is very quiet? Then, wonder
what the green button would say about that activity? We live with sudden bursts of activity all day…believe me, Erynn at times thinks she is a greyhound, a flying Chessie or a member of the Cirque!
    Everyone, stay warm.

  3. We’re looking forward to Sunday when it starts getting above zero so we can be back to running and long walks. The wind has been just terrible, no good.

  4. What a great tool! And if the dogs are out being active, chances are you are too. 🙂

  5. I love how happy she is to be outside. Our Sally used to jump around like that. I think Jack & Maggie are too old, although Jack does it at dinner time. Anxious to read more about how Whistle works out for you.

  6. Hi Y’all!

    Hey Storm, you’re too funny!

    Y’all come on by,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  7. Lovely, silly Storm lol. The weather really has taken a turn this week – it’s finally starting to feel like a normal Michigan winter. Good luck to all the participants, if I had a smart phone I’d definitely enter.

  8. I think Storm’s look does say it all, “Hey mom, it’s too cold for you, not me!” Our person keeps dragging us in because of the cold too and I can’t figure out why she keeps making a fuss. 😉

  9. I think the monitor is really cool. Sometimes I like to track how much time the dogs are doing an activity…I look at the clock, get playing or walking, and then forget what the clock said when I looked! LOL
The dogs are getting stir crazy here…the temps have moderated a bit, but our yard and the sides of the roads are still an icy mess. We need some decent temps and some fresh snow…now!

    1. PS…I was going to say that Sheba doesn’t care how cold it is either. She’ll be out wanting to just lie on the deck in sub zero temps and we have to make her come in! The wind does bother her when it gets howling and blowing things though, so then she’ll come in on her own!

  10. Freighter has the sweetest face and what a great picture of him. Storm was loving outside wasn’t she, I guess sub zero temps don’t matter to her. Hope it warms up some so they can enjoy being out and about. Hugs and nose kisses

  11. Storm is so cute. I love how she loves the outdoors. Sampson is the same, he keeps trying to jump and run on our walks, it’s something about the snow.
