Thunder’s birthday is next week and he decided to get ready for his party by baking up a batch of Peanut Butter Oatmeal Dog Biscuits.  Thanks to Dog Treat Kitchen.com for the recipe which you can see here.

First Thunder got out all of the ingredients.

This is a simple recipe with few ingredients.  I copied the original recipe below.  We cut the recipe in half which made about 2 1/2 dozen biscuits.  The original recipe probably makes 5 dozen biscuits with regular sized cookie cutters.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (you can use another type of flour if your dog is sensitive to wheat)
  • 1 cup rolled oats (I used quick oats because that is what I had on hand)
  • 1/3 cup peanut butter, chunky or smooth (I used a smooth natural peanut butter)
  • 1 1/4 cups hot water
  • Additional flour as needed or for rolling

  • Mix in peanut butter and hot water.  You may need to add more flour if the dough is too sticky.
  • Knead the dough well.

  • Roll out the dough into 1/4 ” thickness and cut into shapes.  (Thunder picked out a bone, a duck and a turkey cookie cutter.)

  • Bake on a lightly greased cookie sheet for 40 minutes.  (I cut this time in half to 20 minutes which was enough.)  Turn off the oven and let them cool overnight or cool completely on a wire rack.

Note:  The recipe notes that this dough can get very sticky.  Our dough did not get sticky, but if your dough does you may need to knead the dough longer or add more flour and continue to knead.

Thunder and I found this recipe very quick and easy.  We liked that it only required a few ingredients which we had on hand.  The biscuits get very crunchy and will keep in an air tight container at room temperature for one week or in the refrigerator for 3 weeks or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

After all that work, Thunder could not wait to try them.

  1. OMD those look delicious. We made liver cake at the weekend and we are still chomping through it. Have a terrific Tuesday.
    Best wishes Molly

  2. wow Thunder you can bake? Glory gets a fabulous guy who is much better in the kitchen than my daddy, what a lucky girl! Is it impawtant to wash your paws before you knead the dough? I hope not :o)

  3. I like the quick and easy myself, but I’m not big on rolling out stuff. LOL Can’t wait to see the rest of the pictures.

    1. You can also roll onto balls and smash with a fork like peanut butter cookies. I suppose you would need to adjust the cooking time.

  4. There’s nothing better than peanut butter and oatmeal! Great choice, Thunder. Haley sure wishes she could celebrate your birthday with you and try one of those treats. 🙂

  5. Love this recipe! We will feature it next week in our “Healthy Dog Treat of the Week” post (if you agree, ofc) 😀

  6. Funny how I see Storm as more of the baker and Thunder as more of an eater. He’s such a serious fellow. Happy birthday, big guy!

    1. He is funny. He looks miserable but when I was actually making the cookies, he was right under my feet waiting for his next photo op.

  7. Gosh, those almost look tasty enough to snitch them from the dog! But Thunder… you shouldn’t have to make your own bday treats! You’re supposed to be waited on paw and foot! 🙂

  8. You are quite the chef, Thunder, those look awesome! We also love simple recipes with just a few common ingredients.

  9. Very good job cooking those cookies sweet Thunder. They look yummy! Hugs and nose kisses

  10. They look good enough for us humans! Since Ducky’s not allowed treats right now, her sisters don’t get any either. The only “treats” they get are the Greenies pill pockets I wrap their yucky-tasting pills in.

  11. Good job baking Thunder the cookies look really good, this must be baking week. Mom doesn’t bake much anymore!
