We took the brown dawgs to cool off in the pond at the local park last weekend.  We had the park mostly to ourselves so I had time to look around and make some observations.

This pair of ducks was swimming in the pond.  One stood out more than the other.

The geese decided to move when we started training.

It was a clear calm morning and this guy was making the most of it.

Then there was this guy, tied to a tree and jumping up and down because it wasn’t his turn.

And finally this guy who despite an empty park, decided it was a good idea to park across from where we were parked and open his door and let his dog out off lead.  Of course the dog saw our dogs and bee-lined right to them and not in a friendly way.

I mentioned to the guy that he might not want his dog to mix it up with Storm (who hubby had a hold of) or Thunder who was tied to a tree and that he might need to move a bit quicker to get his dog.  The dog had zero recall and basically paid zero attention to his person.  The only reason the dog is back over by the guy’s truck is because it happened to get too close to our truck with Freighter in a crate in the back.  Freighter did his best Cujo imitation which sent the dog packing.  (Remember Chessies will not normally look for trouble, but can be protective of their people, places or things.  I could see all three dogs having issues with this charging dog.)

I do not understand people.  I don’t think we have ever just opened the door of the car and let the dogs out off lead in a public parking lot.

Now if that was my dog, fun time would have been over and we would have immediately practiced waiting in the car on lead until I invited the dog to get out.  Then we would have practiced getting out of the car in a calm manner and heeling on lead out and around the car.  I would not have taken the dog a short way away and proceeded to reward it with off lead playtime.  But that is just me.

  1. Sometimes it is like haunted that such guys appear egg-sactly at the wrong time. I smiled while reading, today the old saying fits perfectly … is it a bird? is it a plane? no, it’s a jumping brown dawg :o)

  2. We had a similar issue doing nose work the other day. We were using a small corner of a park where leashes are required to do nose work and this guy kept coming right to where we were with his two off leash dogs and let them run at us. We finally told him we were working, it is an on leash park and he needs to get a hold of his dogs. He was all miffed about it. Our dogs were all on leash searching, but he didn’t seem to understand. Some people just don’t get it. Funny thing is, the large off leash park is on the other side of the baseball field, but I guess he didn’t want to go there.

    1. I call it the dog park mentality. I think this guy thought that even if his dog came over, the dogs would all be pals. Brown dawgs will play with some dogs but it definitely depends on how aggressively the dog approaches them. This is an on lead park, and of course our dogs were off lead but on ecollar. A cop had driven though not 15 minutes earlier and saw us working with our dogs and kept on going. This happens to us quite often in this park and sometimes the police stop to watch. I don’t have an issue with the guy’s dog being off lead provided he could control him and he would have let us finish up.

    1. LOL he jumps up and down like a jumping bean as the marks go off.

  3. Hi Y’all!

Too bad you had to have a rude man and dog spoil things after all that beauty.

    Absolutely LOVE that first photo!

    Y’all come on by,

  4. Sometimes Cujo is necessary. For the humans. I don’t get people sometimes.

    1. LOL except Freighter would have been in trouble for Cujo to humans. 😉

    1. Their brains are either in their butts, being used as seat cushions; or in their feet being used as Dr Scholl’s bunion pads.

    2. I blame it on the dog park mentality where people think all dogs should be friends and play together.

  5. It can be so frustrating dealing with people and this mentality. I have Sampson off-leash most days at our park, but I am on constant watch and as soon as I see someone (or another dog) he goes immediately on leash. Most times I will turn around or head in a different direction if possible. But as you well know, I’ve had many encounters with people and their off leash dogs. I sometimes wonder what needs to happen to have people wise up…

    1. I blame it on permissive training practices that are so popular today. I could write an entire post…lol.

  6. Well, most everything…wildlife, etc., was great at the park! That guy probably hasn’t ever trained his dog to do anything. There’s one in every crowd (or at every park), isn’t there?

    1. Lucky for us this park is normally pretty good but it was a holiday weekend so I think it attracted a slightly different crowd.

  7. People around here ignore leash laws all the time. I was at a park once and had to pull someone’s labrador off my newborn baby. The dog crawled into the back seat and onto the baby. I had to haul on the dog’s collar with both hands to get it out of my car. The owner was unconcerned.

    1. That is unbelievable. Probably the worst off leash story I have heard and I am sure pretty scary while it was happening.

  8. All good reasons to avoid off-leash dog parks at peak hours. And why I just walk my girls on leash through the people park.

    1. LOL it was before 9am and there was nobody else there. At least we did not have to contend with people fishing. 🙂

  9. Some people’s dogs… a guy at work showed me pictures of his Golden Retriever that was attacked at a reservoir where he was fishing. The other dog ran quite a distance to attack his, and by the time he got them separated, his Golden had a big rip across the back of his neck.
