Packing for a trip can be a challenge.  On Tuesday afternoon we headed out to spend a long Thanksgiving weekend up at our cabin.  We left work early because we wanted to make it there before dark.  This time of year you have to worry about hitting deer, especially after dark.

Packing Up For Thanksgiving

We were bringing a lot of stuff with us.  Food for our time there which included turkey and all the fixin’s.  Of course the dogs and the cat needed food.  Hubby was hunting, so there was all of that stuff.  Plus our clothes.

It was going to take a while to load the truck.

Something Was Missing

We packed up all of our stuff, the hunting stuff, the dogs’ stuff and the cat’s stuff.  The dogs were ready.  We were ready.

However, we were missing one thing.  The cat.

Pcaking The Cat Fo A Trip
Nestle

Nestle sometimes hides when she sees us getting things together for the cabin.  She likes the cabin once she gets there, but she is not fond of the trip there.

Hubby and I have a plan.  Whoever gets home from work first on a day we plan to leave, grabs the cat and sticks her in a crate while we pack up.

Unfortunately last Tuesday she was nowhere to be found.  We checked her usual places.  Nope!

There are lots of places in our house for a small cat can hide and we were burning daylight.

The Secret Weapon

Lucky for us, we have a secret weapon.

A hunting dog with a good nose.

Thunder Helps With The Packing
Thunder Is Ready

First I had to decide where to start my search.  I hoped the cat was not hiding in the basement.  I hate to admit it, but it might take until Christmas to finish searching there.

I closed the basement door and headed up stairs with my secret weapon.

I told Thunder to “find her, find the cat”.  He put his nose down and sure enough he had her located in about 30 seconds.

She was under the bed in the spare room.  It is hard to see under that bed so I may have missed her looking myself, but I knew Thunder had her because his tail was going the same way it does when he is on a bird.  Nothing beats a hunting dog with a good nose when you are packing up for a trip.

I fished the cat out which was not easy because it is so tight under there.  I kind of had to take the bed apart.  Typical cat.  Sometimes they make you work for it.

Finally I had her and we were on our way.

We had a great weekend except that it rained most of Thanksgiving day.  A blowing, pouring wet rain which washed away all of the snow.  Thank goodness it was warm enough that it was rain and not ice.

Hope you had a nice weekend too.

  1. Funny that you mentioned having to get her out from under the bed! Cody had to go to the Vet on Friday and thankfully he wasn’t under the bed, because if he is, and he has to go to the Vet, I have to cancel and re-schedule because it is impossible to get him out! DakotasDen

  2. Thunder you have the bestest nose ever! How great that you found Nestle and you could start! I’m sure even with the bad weather you had a great thanksgiving… to be together is the best… hope Nestle agrees :o)

  3. Darn cats! Cat bro Bert is always trying to run away from home. When he escapes out the door, Mom calls in Bailie and says get the kitty. Bailie races out and tackles him within moments and she keeps him there until Mom can get to him. Now when it is dark out so much and he gets out, Mom can’t see him most times he escapes, but Bailie hunts him down in no time. We dogs are so helpful with cat care!

  4. Thunder sounds like you saved the day by sniffing out the cat. Glad you had a good Thanksgiving and everybody got some delicious turkey.:)

  5. Black cats are especially good at hiding, since you can’t see them in dark places! Good job, Thunder! I should probably train Luke to find Samantha…she has to go to the vet today, and I worry she’ll disappear before it’s time!

  6. I’m glad you found her! Is it the ride? I heard once that the speed in which a car travels makes the cat sick, like they cannot comprehend the speed. I’m not sure if that’s true or not. It’s been a long time since I had a cat and then I did not travel with her.
