When the brown dawgs are not out training or hunting, they like to get out in the yard and have some fun with a bouncing kong.  I have written previously that Freighter is just now getting the whole concept of fetch play.

He used to like to take the item we were playing with and run off and chew it.  Since we were just hanging out in the yard playing, I never pushed him to bring the item right back.  Whether I threw it again or not did not matter to me.  I certainly wasn’t buying into a game of keep away no matter how many times he tried to start that.

At some point Freighter figured out that if he wanted me to throw the item again, he was going to have to bring it back to me.  Lesson learned.  Now we can have some fun.

Fetch play is a great way to get a dog out and moving, especially if you are using an item that bounces all over (and if your dog has not mastered catching the bouncing item).  The dog uses all of its muscles as it tries to catch the darn thing.

With that said, I give you…

  1. LOL! That is funny. Bailie’s bounces now and then in the house and it is pretty funny. Since they bounce all crazy, it is fun to try to catch them again.

  2. Haha, that’s awesome! One of my Mastiff pet sitting clients plays like that with a huge black KONG 😉 It’s hilarious watching it bounce all over the yard, with the giant pup in hot pursuit!! Nice job catching on to playing fetch, Freighter! My boy Buzz has mastered that game – his sister Missy not so much.

  3. It’s funny that just lately (before her surgery) Sheba had all of the sudden decided to start returning the ball to me to throw. Like Freighter, she usually preferred to take it aside and chew on it, or pass it off to Cricket to return to me. Now, if we can just get Luke to catch on…..
We haven’t ever really taken the kongs outside for play, I’ll have to try those and see if Luke is more interested in them than the ball. He seems to get bored with things so easily!

  4. Ducky has a Kong Bounzer that bounces like crazy, too. She could keep herself entertained for hours, I think! But I love watching her. We play a little keep away, but I mostly let her run away with it and then throw Shadow’s ball for her.

  5. what a paw-formance Freighter… that’s perfect for all the great stages of this world…. and I will sit in the first row, that’s for sure :o)

  6. That is a good game of bouncing Kong!! We love the Kong. It is one of the only toys that does not get destroyed!!

  7. Looks like Freighter is having fun. I never thought Dachshunds were one to chase things until I got Gretel and started dog-sitting them (since Chester was my only example and he doesn’t). Gretel likes to play “get” but she hasn’t gotten the whole bring it back thing down yet. Some of the Dachshunds we watch are seriously ball obsessed. Luckily, they HAVE learned that they need to bring things back and usually drop the ball at our feet.
