Take a break from your day and come turkey watching with Thunder.

Last Saturday was just beautiful so we were sitting on our screened porch at the cabin watching the birds, squirrels and chipmunks gather around the bird feeders.  Thunder was hanging out with us when all of a sudden, he spied a turkey coming up the driveway.

Here is an Instagram video of the encounter.

Normally our dogs do not bark at birds, but there is something about turkeys that has them on guard.  As soon as Thunder started barking the turkey left, but not for long.

A few minutes later, the turkey came back and we made sure to tell Thunder to be a gracious host and not bark at it.

This time Thunder spent his time quietly turkey watching as he demonstrates in this Instagram video.

The turkeys are no longer in large flocks. They have broken up into pairs or singles.  They come into our feeders, eat a bit, and then drift away…all the while with a watchful pair of Chessie eyes on them.

  1. Thunder probably knows these wise birds are poaching little bird food! En guarde! Erynn was squirrel watching yesterday, just daring that fluffy tail to come into her yard, again. It is very interesting to watch your Chessie watching other animals.

  2. We see bunches of wild turkeys on our walks sometimes. They are weird looking! We aren’t interested in them much, but Mom enjoys seeing them.

  3. How fun! Barley never knows what to make of turkeys. She’s pretty nervous around birds, but I don’t think she can figure out what a turkey actually is, so she just stops and stares when we see them.

  4. I try to stay away from the turkeys. The ones in my area stay in a large flock and they are quite brazen, I wouldn’t want to tangle with one, nor would I want my dogs to either!

    Thunder is showing great restraint!

  5. We have had just one lone turkey wandering through our yard from time to time. So far the dogs have only seen her once, and they were not very gracious hosts!
