Our senior dogs need exercise, even in the heat of the summer.  What better way to exercise and keep cool than a swim in a nice pond?  So last weekend they got some senior dog swim time.

Of course our dogs don’t just go out and swim in a pond.  They like to retrieve things, so retrieving it was.  We threw bumpers and training birds into the pond for them.

Thunder (age 10) and Storm (turning 9 on Saturday) were excited to get out and work.  You would think that they would slow down a bit in their senior years.  Nope.

Storm charged to the bumper.

Finally it was Thunder’s turn.  He sure loves to retrieve bumpers and ducks in a pond.

  1. Macha loves to swim, no retrieves necessary! Last Friday we spent time at a friend’s pond and Erynn discovered fish…she looked like the Loch Ness Monster, raising herself out of the water and then diving into the middle of a fingerling school. Both were reluctant to leave, even though it was supper time! Correct, swimming is great exercise and fun!

  2. You’re so lucky to have a place for doggy swims. We need to find that. I think the local park is getting tired of Tallulah jumping in the fountain. 😉

  3. Hi Y’all!

Wish I was there. Really hot here. ‘Cause of gators I can’t swim this time of year. 🙁

  4. This just has to be some of the best exercise for senior dogs! I often wonder how long Sheba would keep going if I let her; they just love it so much.
Our late Lab mix Maggie was the only dog we had that swam just for the sheer joy of it. She loved to chase things too, but even if you weren’t throwing she’d still go out and swim. Sheba mostly won’t go in unless you throw something, and so far the same with Luke.

  5. They’re the closest to our hearts. Always happy to see them still get on it and hyper active. Like watching a veteran on the field doing it one more time.. or many more!! 🙂
