Today is Independence Day.  It’s a day to kick back, maybe go to the beach, take a hike, and eat some barbecue.

Freighter said he is celebrating with some silly glasses yummy Blue Bars.  What is a holiday without treats.

Barbecues and biscuits are great, but Freighter also doesn’t want to forget why we celebrate.  This day is in commemoration of July 4, 1776 when the thirteen colonies of the Continental Congress declared themselves to be the United Sates of America, an independent nation no longer part of the British Empire.

“…Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness…” –An Excerpt From The Declaration Of Independence, July 4, 1776

By the time the Declaration of Independence was written and signed, the colonies and Britain were already at war over whether the colonies would govern themselves or remain subjects of the British crown.  It was a war that would last until 1783 and the colonists would pay a dear price to achieve their independence.

So enjoy the holiday, but remember the reason we celebrate.
