Today is Independence Day.  It’s a day to kick back, maybe go to the beach, take a hike, and eat some barbecue.

Freighter said he is celebrating with some silly glasses yummy Blue Bars.  What is a holiday without treats.

Barbecues and biscuits are great, but Freighter also doesn’t want to forget why we celebrate.  This day is in commemoration of July 4, 1776 when the thirteen colonies of the Continental Congress declared themselves to be the United Sates of America, an independent nation no longer part of the British Empire.

By the time the Declaration of Independence was written and signed, the colonies and Britain were already at war over whether the colonies would govern themselves or remain subjects of the British crown.  It was a war that would last until 1783 and the colonists would pay a dear price to achieve their independence.

So enjoy the holiday, but remember the reason we celebrate.
