It was a busy holiday weekend in our neighborhood.  The neighbors on each side of us had company.  One neighbor had a birthday party for her granddaughter which involved a lot of kids and a big bounce house.  Our neighbor told us abut the party ahead of time which we appreciated because we made sure to keep the dogs inside so as not to disturb the fun.  Our dogs love kids, but we did not want them to head on over to visit children who may not be comfortable with dogs.  Plus with a bounce house and the excitement of many kids at a party, the environment is not really a good one for dogs to meet children.  We like to control how our dogs meet new people if we can.

The neighbor on the other side had some family over which included a couple of kids.  The dogs were able to visit those children since there were only a few people and a couple of kids so it was an environment better suited for visiting. Get-togethers at our neighbors homes are not a commonplace occurrence and we were pretty happy that the dogs took them in stride especially considering they were already on edge due to the never ending fireworks going off in the neighborhood.

That brings us to fireworks.

There were fireworks going off all week long well into the night and the early morning (like 4am early morning).  The dogs took most of it in stride.  Their people not so much.  It is difficult to sleep with all that noise.

The only time the dogs became nervous or concerned was when the fireworks were loud enough to shake our house.  Even the cat was frightened by those.  I will never understand why these kinds of fireworks are legal for residential use, but in our state they are.  Lucky for us, the super loud fireworks were only on the night of the 4th.

I guess people have used up all of their fireworks because it is all quiet in the neighborhood now.  Thank goodness.  We will not have to deal with the fireworks until next year.

How did you survive the 4th?

  1. Erynn and Macha took a long walk early in the day. Our 4th fireworks occur on the 3rd. We had company, but the dogs came in at 9;30 ~ they were able to visit and watch the parade to the park and downtown. Maumee pretty much shuts down. We too have the renegade boomers! Not legal in Ohio. Dogs and Mom closed up the house and retired to the bedroom….
Now it is not noise but heat and humidity. Finally some rain last night.
Hope for a cool and quiet weekend.

  2. My girls do not like the fireworks. They are not legal but that doesn’t seem to stop the few. Thank goodness they are over and we can continue to enjoy the summer. Love the pics of the pups.

  3. Hi Y’all!

They’re legal in the low country too. This year my Human made sure we were in the mountains for the 4th. No fireworks up here…they have them down in the town…so all was quiet.

  4. I’m glad that the brown dawgs handled the fireworks so well. Barley did better than she usually does, but she slept in the bathroom for the beginning of every night for the whole weekend (and I can’t really complain because it was hot and I slept better without a big furry creature in the bed). We had some weird timing on fireworks, too–some as early as 2:30 in the afternoon–which made it hard to get Barley out for bathroom breaks at reasonable hours, but it’s gone back to being quiet here, too.

  5. that was nice to inform you in advance … our neighbors wouldn’t do that… they love surprises. and we were sure surprised as we thought the land is on war at thursday night…. but before we grabbed our weapons and a helmet we noticed that they just celebrated the victory of team bleu at soccer cup :O)
I hear you for the fireworks… we will have this pleasure next week… I wonder that such war-like fireworks are still available … think the docs at ER are with us too :o(

  6. Luckily things did stay pretty quiet here. I hate nothing worse than being awoken (or kept awake) by loud booms….it makes me very crabby! I do not miss that about our old neighborhood.
I’m glad it didn’t turn out too badly for you, and that it’s all over with now!

  7. Sounds like you made the best of it. We had some crazy loud ones, too. I had a super busy pet sitting weekend caring for 4 different parties’ dogs. Thankfully, none of them were really phased by them (which did surprise me, honestly). My own pups were good about them. They usually are as long as they get their regular exercise and treats combined with background noise. I had HGTV on in the background.

  8. Ow… They looks so tired. I really don’t like firework. But why people love it so much? Nothing but a noisemaker.

  9. Oh that would make me mad. Especially because now Sampson is bothered by them.

Our 4th wasn’t THAT bad. The neighbor two houses up didn’t have his party, but someone did. Still it wasn’t too loud and this year, for some reason the police decided to investigate. Apparently they were in the neighborhood with flood lights looking for the perps. Thankfully, we didn’t hear any of it, I had the air on and TV on.

In this state the only fireworks allowed are the ones that stand or sparklers, but people go to surrounding states and bring them in. The police have never interfered before, but I won’t complain. It was on the news that a woman’s garage caught fire from a firework. Apparently she never heard it because she was holed up in the bedroom with the air on because her dog was afraid.
