We have an unsolved mystery in our backyard.
It all started a couple of weeks ago when I noticed a lot of bird doo doo inside the dog kennels. It was even in the pails we fill with water. Every time I put the dogs out, I had to wash out the pails because I did not want the water contaminated.
Now Storm is not opposed to eating animal doo doo, but she draws the line at bird doo doo and especially in her water pail.
In all the years we had these kennels we never had this issue. Sometimes we have an issue with spiders getting in the kennel, but never birds.
Then we discovered where they were going. We have a board and a tarp over top to provide permanent shade in the summer and cover from rain and snow. Turns out little sparrows were going between the fencing and the board.
It seems the sparrows are perching on the fencing when the dogs are not in the kennel run. But why? Now that is an unsolved mystery.
The only thing I can think is that maybe they are eating bugs that are resting on the board. But that is just a guess.
Your turn. Can you solve this mystery?
I’m with you for the bug-theory…. or maybe it is the name and they are pirates who want to enter any place like Jack Sparrow?
Sparrow like to get out of the sun they like to feed on moths and other bugs.
I think that must be it. We do have a lot of shrubs they normally like to perch in. I guess the kennel is more appealing.
Have you noticed any of the material on the roof of the kennel being damaged? My thought would be maybe they are looking for nesting material. Or maybe they just want a break from the weather.
Either way, I agree with the dogs, bird poop is gross. 🙂
Have a great weekend.
They are safe under that cover….as they are certainly a food item for something….Now, there is a type of a spikes-on-a-string/wire that can be used to keep birds from perching comfortably. Miniature ‘bob-ware’, so to speak. As to source, perhaps an Ag Co-op..or as is most likely these days…Da NETZ .. I suppose a mat of it could be wired up to a frame to place over the kennel top. Raise the plywood just enough to keep it from crushing the ‘needles’ . Good luck…my Dad once told me that his Dad and Grand-dad used to give a penny bounty on each sparrow the kids could shoot out of the haymows — ruined the hay with droppings, and hay ain’t cheap to a Depression era farmer.
Eating bugs sounds like a good guess.
My guess would be that they are looking for a place to build a nest, though it doesn’t seem the right time of year for that.
That is a mystery! I wonder why they’d choose this summer to do it when they’ve never done it before.
It is pretty hot and dry so maybe that is why.
