Last week I wrote about Freighter having an issue with steadiness on walk-ups.  Saturday morning we set out to do some training on this.  As soon as we got to the training grounds, it started raining.  We began to leave but then thought what the heck?  We were there and it wasn’t raining all that hard so we might as well set up and do some walk-ups in the rain.

We did not want to drag out all of our equipment so we set up a double with our winger behind a bail of straw for the walk-up mark.  We hoped to hide it enough so that Freighter would not see it.  I was out in the field to hand throw the second mark.  We also set up a blind running right through the marks.

Freighter did a nice job on the walk-up.  Hubby is transitioning him to a whistle sit and he sat right with the whistle.

It was raining too hard to take my camera out, but I was able to take my phone out for a couple of quick photos.

After Freighter ran, he was put up for a bit and Thunder and Storm ran the set-up.  They did a very nice job and enjoyed getting out for some exercise.  They do not care about rain.  It makes them think of hunting season.

The rain let up for a bit, so we were able to set-up a triple for Freighter with a different blind.  Thunder (the real thing, not our dog Thunder 🙂 ) was rumbling all around so after Freighter ran this set-up we quickly packed up and were on our way.

Freighter will be doing a lot more walk-ups in the coming weeks since he has another test later this month.  Hopefully the whistle will help him with his steadiness.

Did you do any training this weekend?

  1. Erynn took some time to go meet a trio of screeching little girls in the neighborhood. All part of her service/TDI training. Went well. Still very hot here, and Macha is just taking it easy, walking in the shade and on grass
Rain felt good, as did the breeze.

    1. We had a coolish weekend. It was a nice break from the heat.

    1. Such different weather from last week’s sweltering heat. I was actually wearing a coat and thankful for it.

  2. Freighter I cross my paws for the test this month and I know you will be great there :o) We were lazy, but I was so outstanding good while on howl-i-day that I even got a gift today… I only had to made my own confetti from that gift to celebrate the really easy Easy :o)

  3. We would have had to pack up and leave at the first clap of thunder! Bentley is definitely not a fan. Cheers to your gang for not letting the weather deter them. ♥

    1. Freighter isn’t either but you know what is funny about that? We were using dead ducks and he was so focused on them I do not think he heard the thunder like he doesn’t hear hubby say “sit”.

  4. I think Freighter will do great on his test. Glad the dawgs had some outdoor fun. We’re still hot and humid here – today the temp is down but it’s raining and obviously the humidity is horrible. Can’t wait for fall!!!

  5. We hope Freighter the whistle sits work and Freighter continues to make progress.
Do you ever get nice weather there for training? It seems like it’s either super hot or raining!
Our crew doesn’t mind the rain either. I used to never play outside with them in the rain but now as long as it’s not pouring I’ll just put on a raincoat and get out there with them. We all seem to need our daily fresh air!

  6. Ooo, how I envy your rain! We haven’t had any in ages. Funny about the “thunder rumbling”. Now if you’d only have seen a freighter while the thunder rumbled from the storm while you were out with Freighter, Thunder and Storm – that would hvae been *really* confusing! 🙂

    1. LOL I need you, the published writer, to write my posts!

  7. Freighter has hunting prowess in the rain. It’s like’s it better than a regular sunny day. Guess he really liked being soaked in the rain. Great job to you and Freighter!
