Last weekend Thunder and Storm got out for a scouting trip in the forest ahead of hunting season.  This is an annual trip because so much can change year to year in the forest.  (If you missed last year’s trip with Storm and Freighter, you can read about it here.)

It was a cool morning with bright sunshine peeking through the trees.  There were zero bugs which was great so come along with us on our scouting trip.

Storm and Thunder were excited to get out to do some exploring.  Freighter had hunt tests the last two weekends so Thunder and Storm spent the last two weekends at home not doing much at all.

Storm stuck pretty close but Thunder kept wandering off as he followed his nose sniffing around.

Hubby was scouting for a tree to set up his tree stand for archery deer season which will open soon.  If you are a hunter, you know that you need the perfect tree.  Thunder and Storm do not care about that, they just want to sniff and explore.

It can be hard to take pictures of dogs among all the trees.  Mostly you get trees.

Every once and a while they slowed down which gave me a shot at a photo.

We also checked hubby’s hunting spot on the river.  It is really more of a bayou or a little branch of the river.  We had a hot dry summer and there was not much water.  Perhaps the beaver’s damned it up further down?  It is not a great spot to put a dog in but it does have a hard bottom so it might be OK in October when the season opens.

Luckily hubby has another secret spot if this one does not work out.

Have you done any scouting lately?

  1. we currently see a lot of hunters who build their treestands for the season. (the most peeps here use mobile treestands on wheels, they can pull with a truck). we grinned a little while reading, because we both remembered the unlucky hunter we met once. The poor guy fell down from his stand (too much scope) and we had to call an ambulance for him. but instead to be grateful that we found him, he informed us that this is private property we can’t use for a walk while the paramedics carried him away …

  2. The Maumee is low also…many people walking across rock and wading. Old time hunters in this area know the best spots which the do not share! Our dog trainer has a year round tree stand back in the woods. While Erynn is at class, Macha and Mom tramp about the woods or around the fields ~ the one thing we do not wish to see is the boar! Caught on camera a few moths ago. Lots of sniffing on daily walks, and looking skyward as the geese pass overhead.

  3. I think scouting, and I automatically picture Thunder and Storm making shelters out of rain coats and starting fires with flint. But this kind of scouting is cool, too.

  4. You can have some of our water. We’ve had so much rain here, it’s ridiculous! We don’t hunt, so no scouting other than the daily squirrel and wabbit checks.

  5. Hi Y’all!

I’ve been followin’ Freighters Master passes and other adventures. Our internet keeps givin’ me an error with and sad face everytime I try to publish a comment. I hope this one posts.

Glad y’all had a good day scouting. My congrats to Freighter on his Master passes.

    Y’all come on by,

  6. We rarely scout anymore, although I accidentally found a nice area to walk the dogs in one Saturday when I was self-detouring to avoid traffic. 😀 It is a distance from the house, so we haven’t been there yet, but it’s in the back of my mind.

Our water bodies are drying up too. We need some rain.

  7. There’s nothing like a good walk in the woods/scouting trip. That water at least looks clean, which seems especially good when it’s so low. We are in a near drought condition here, but at least our favorite swimming spot for Sheba is still nice and clean too.
