The Time I Met Nestle’s Doppelgänger

Doppelgänger is a German word used in fiction or folklore that means a ghostly double or counterpart of a living person.  In common language it is often used to describe a look-alike.  Often seeing a Doppelgänger is a precursor to bad luck.

Most do not ever see their look-alike, but a few weeks back I ran into a kitty that was the spitting image of Nestle.

Here is how it happened.

I had been food shopping and was unloading my van which was parked in the garage.  The last trip out to get bags, a black cat appeared at the back of my van.  Just like that, there was a cat hanging around and the cat looked exactly like our cat Nestle.  The cat was the same size and had the same face and ears as Nestle.

Now it might have been because it was getting dark, but I really thought it was Nestle.  Since when do stray cats just show up and hang out while you unload your car?  Around here, the answer would be never before.  We do not see stray cats around here.

Then I thought, “Maybe it was Nestle?”  Maybe I had left the door from the garage to the house open and Nestle escaped?  That is not likely because Nestle is a scaredicat.  She has never tried to go outside, let alone escape to the outside.  But you never know.

I called to the cat but the cat did not respond.  Nestle knows and responds to her name.  That was when I knew it was Nestle’s Doppelgänger.

Hoping to prevent any bad luck which might follow such an encounter, I kind of shooed the Doppelgänger away.  Plus I did not want it to get trapped in the garage.

I guess that worked because I have not seen Nestle’s look-alike again.

Have you ever seen your Doppelgänger?

  1. wow… I’m glad it wasn’t Nestlé. I had such a weird adventure yesterday. I waited in the car for mark and suddenly I saw a man what looked like mark. But he passed the car without any look. I opened the door and said: hello? here we are! the man turned around and looked confused and then I saw it was a stranger…. uhoh!

  2. Our cats all have distinctive markings, but our old cat had a twin down the road from us. Every time we saw it, we would run home to check on our cat!

  3. I’m pretty sure there is only one Barley in the world, but in our old neighborhood, there was a white cat that looked a lot like Soth from a distance (up close it was a little thinner and I don’t think it had any missing chunks in its ear). The first time Barley and I saw it while we were walking she froze in the middle of the side walk, got very tense, and stared down the cat–which is what she does when her brother runs out the back door at their grandparents’ house without his leash on–so I’m pretty sure Barley thought it was Soth and knew that he should not be on that street! We circled back by our apartment and I breathed a sight of relief when we saw Soth lounging in the window and then we continued on our walk 🙂 That’s so strange that the doppleganger showed up in your garage!

    1. I wonder what brown dawgs would have done if they saw the Nestle look-alike? Probably the same as Barley.

  4. We are so rare, we never see anyone like us. We have seen kitties that look similar to ours or mixed breed dogs that look like Mom’s first dog.

  5. Now some might take that to be kind of spooky! 🙂 There is a cat on Brian’s Home Blog that looks exactly like our late cat Miss Bones, right down to being very chubby. Needless to say, she is my favorite on their blog!

    1. Thank goodness it was not October when I saw the cat….lol. Of course the Miss Bones look-alike is your favorite.

  6. My Mama’s cousin has a cat that looks just like me. I think her is my long lost sisser 😉

    xoxo,
    Matilda (& Matt)

  7. I think that would freak me out. I mean what are the odds that you’d see an animal that looked exactly like yours? Did you buy a lottery ticket? 😉

Once I had Delilah up in the woods, and I looked down the main path and saw a man walking in, and he had a dog that looked exactly like Sampson! I remember thinking, who in this neighborhood has a dog that color? Before I realized it was Hubby walking SAMPSON! LOL
