Happy New Year!  Wishing you all good things in 2017!

We spent New Year’s weekend up at our cabin.  The nice thing about being there is that we do not have to worry about fireworks like we would at our home.  It was perfectly quiet there and in fact we turned in early on New Year’s Eve.

The weather on New Year’s Day was beautiful.  It was sunny and warm for the beginning of January.  There had been a pile of snow up there, but then the temperature warmed up Christmas weekend and we had some rain, so much of the snow melted.  Since the snow was not too deep, it was a perfect day for a walk to the river.

New Year’s Day Walk To The River

Hubby and I headed out with Freighter.  Hubby had already taken Thunder and Storm for a shorter walk while I was doing the breakfast dishes.  As senior dogs, they do not need the super long walks they needed in their younger days.  Freighter however, has boundless energy, so he needs to get out and run.

Run he did.

Since there was not much snow, we did not have to worry about snowmobiles or other traffic on the trails.  That meant that Freighter had the freedom to run where he wanted.

Whenever Freighter got too far ahead, he was recalled back to us.

He is a good boy and comes when called.  You can see from the photos that there is not much snow at all.

Finally we got to our favorite spot on the river.  This is the Muskegon River.  It twists and turns.  It is shallow in many spots and as you can see there are steep bluffs here, but in some spots they are not as steep.

Hubby hunts wood ducks on this river, but on one of the bayous.

We made our way to another spot and I made Freighter stop and pose for a picture.

He was a bit impatient to sit when he could be running, but he indulged me.

It was an epic walk on such a beautiful day.  The going was easy so we kept on walking and walking.  I think we were gone about 2 hours.  We even met a new neighbor on our way back to the cabin.

It was a great way to start 2017!

  1. we are just back from a walk around a lake too… you’re right it is a wonderful way to welcome a new year… have a great 2017…with only good things and a lot of smiles and no sorrows and tears…

  2. Looks great! Sadly, since Christmas, it has been an icy mess here. We are still getting out, but the fun of good snow is gone and we have to be careful with all the ice.

  3. That recall photo is the best one of Freighter that I have ever seen! GREAT SHOT!

  4. That looks like a beautiful way to start the year! It rained all weekend at my parents’ house, so we didn’t have to deal with too many fireworks this year either!

  5. What a beautiful walk to the river, great picture of it! Have a wonderful new year and many pretty walks to the river.

  6. Great pictures and some very beautiful scenery to walk among. Good job sweet Freighter sitting still for that nice picture. We can see they don’t mind snow to walk and run in at all. Chancy don’t like snow. Hugs and nose kisses

  7. That was the perfect way to start off the new year…it looked beautiful out there! I have a tough time motivating myself to walk in the winter, but when we do get out there, I never regret it one bit. Hubby and I got out to make some snowshoe trails on that Friday (it was so beautiful after a fresh snow), but never got to take the dogs out there. The weather turned crappy and now the trails are all icy and rough. 🙁

  8. Happy New Year! We’ve had snow for the holidays and it’s sticking around. We’re supposed to get more tonight but then rain. Looks like the rest of the country is having a White January.
