Versatile

A couple of weeks ago, (OK maybe was a month :) ), Lexy3587 over at “Gone For A Walk” awarded this blog the Versatile Blogger Award, here.  We were super excited and honored to receive it; however due to us being in the midst of a heavy training schedule, I am just now getting around to do a post on it.  Without further delay, here are the particulars for accepting this award:

1. Post linking back to the person that gave you the award.
2. Share 7 random things about yourself.
3. Award 15 recently discovered blogs.
4. Drop them a note and tell them about it.

7 random things:

1.  Chessies are double coated, meaning they have a wavy outercoat and a dense wooly undercoat.

2.  Thunder and Storm have different style coats, but both are correct Chessie coats.

3.  Thunder’s coat is fairly short and waves along his back, but not much on the sides.  He has a fairly dense undercoat.  (This is a picture from March.)

4.  Storm’s coat is a little longer and waiver down her back and on the sides.  (This is a picture from April.)

5.  Generally Chessies “blow” or shed their entire coat twice a year (including the undercoat).

6.  Right now Thunder is mostly “out-of-coat” and Storm still has a decent coat.

7.  You can always tell when the brown dawgs are blowing coat because you will find tell-tale hair balls all over the place. :)

15 recently discovered blogs:

Listed in no particular order and some are not that recent as my time to discover blogs is also limited at the moment.  Check them out.  They are all really interesting and so much fun.  I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do!

Thanks again to Gone For A Walk for this award!

The last post of the year isn’t about the 2 brown dawgs.  It is about a rescued chesapeake bay retriever that is going to be on the  Natural Balance float in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day.  Stanley had a rough start in life, but  has been trained by his owner to be a dock jumping dog and to ride a wave board.  If you happen to catch the parade, keep an eye out for Stanley he sounds like one great dog!

Read his story:

Of course the 2 brown dawgs wouldn’t miss a chance to wish everyone a Happy New Year!

Miscellaneous Stuff

And finally……I finished putting together some of the pictures from the Harsen’s Island Started Test.  So many great dogs (yes some were yellow and black…but ssssh don’t tell the brown ones).  The pictures are courtesy of Michelle.  Many thanks to her!  She took a ton of great pictures and I could only include a small portion.  I made a little slide show.

Chessies In Need of Help

I saw this item about some Chessies in need of help and I thought I would post it.

This is from the Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief and Rescue website:

On June 6th, CBRR&R was contacted by a Dakota animal control officer (ACO). They had just taken in 10 Chessies. The ACO said a neighbor called because he had not seen the dogs in a few months and was worried.

Animal control responded by going to the property where the dogs were housed and found 10 purebred Chessies living in squalor. Having not been allowed outside for such a long time, the house was covered in urine and feces. The dogs were very frightened and emaciated. The ACO asked CBRR&R to take these dogs so they would have a chance with people who know the breed.

According to the rescue, there were three puppies that were very under weight and some of the adult dogs had medical issues .  All need basic veterinary care: such as worming, spaying/neutering, heartworm testing and vaccinations.

 The latest update:

June 17, 2009: From the foster mom: They are all doing well. They are all very friendly and like to be hugged and cuddled. They still smell pretty horrible as I don’t think they are quite ready for baths yet. I really think they may have had some positive attention along the way and were even at one time housebroken. They do not make messes inside, even now that their bowels are starting to function quite well. They are starting to learn the routine of the kennel. With all of dogs that are here, I always go in their pen with them when I feed, no exceptions. As of today, every one of the SD 10 waits until their food is in the bowl and I have to pet them first and love them — then they can eat. It’s very cute the way they are responding. Lyle was out there today and couldn’t believe the change in them. They are going to be good dogs.

The Chessie Relief and Rescue is asking for tax deductible donations, in any amount, to help with veterinary care for these poor dogs.   Read the Chessie Relief and Rescue’s plea for help here.  Or if you are interested in adopting a Chessie, there are links on the site for Chessies up for adoption.
