The Detroit Kennel Club Show–The Chessies

We left our house early because the Puppy/Veteran Sweeps for the Chessies were scheduled to start at 8:45 am.  Sweeps were on time, but due to a judge change, the rest of the Chessies did not show until after 11 am.  There were only a few dogs entered in sweeps so we had a nice big gap of time.  It actually worked out because not only did I have time to meet Leroy and watch him show, (more on that here), but we also had some time to shop at the various vendors.  Our mission: something for destructo pup to chew.  More on that another time.  Unfortunately, we could not stay at the show the entire day because we have Freighter at home and he cannot last hours and hours without a potty break.  We watched the Chessies and then skedaddled.  Unfortunately, we were a little late for Freighter and he was not pleased.  Poor guy.

I took a few pictures.  Again, my camera does not do well in the lighting at Cobo.  Plus the ring the Chessies had required us to sit quite far away from the dogs.  I have found that using my zoom in the Cobo lighting also makes for blurry pictures.  As a result, many of my pictures were not very good. Sorry.

This is Millet.  Her people also have Woody, one of Freighter’s brothers.  Millet hasn’t spent a ton of time in the ring, but she and her owner/handler did a great job at a big show.

Storm’s breeder had several dogs entered and unfortunately, I don’t have pictures of them all.  They had a good show.

Sadie had a great two days finishing her championship by earning Winner’s Bitch, Best of Winner’s, Best of Opposite Sex both days and taking Best Bred By Exhibitor in Breed on Sunday.

CH IRISH'S TIGRESS OF THE KNIGHT

Storm’s breeders also had a Special Dog entered on Saturday and Sunday that took a Select and a Special Bitch entered on Sunday that took Select.  On Saturday, a bitch they bred also took a Select.

It was a fun day and nice to just sit and watch the dogs.  Congratulations to all of the winners!

The Detroit Kennel Club Show–Meeting Leroy

Due to the nasty weather on Saturday, and Freighter’s play date with his sis Sunny, we decided to stick close to home this weekend.  Since we were home, we made a last minute decision to attend the Detroit Kennel Club Show.  The Chessies were scheduled to start showing first thing in the morning so we figured we could watch them and would not have to leave Freighter crated at home too long.  In past years we have entered this show, but for the last couple of years we have only attended as spectators.  This is a benched show which means that the dogs are required to be on the bench all day long.  Our dogs don’t really do well sitting around all day.  Thunder does better than Storm, but for whatever reason, he is generally out of coat when this show takes place.  It is expensive to enter, so generally we put those entry fees toward training.  :)

This year, not only did we go to support the Chessies, but there was an additional draw because Leroy of My Brown Newfies was making his debut as a special.  The Newfs were scheduled to show at the same time as the Chessies, but due to a judge change, the Chessie time was pushed back so I was free to go over and check out the Newfs.  Leroy did great but there were a lot of Newf specials and unfortunately he did not get a ribbon.  :(

I took some pictures, but my camera just does not take great pictures in the kind of lighting they have at Cobo.  I love pictures of dogs when they are moving, and my camera does OK in daylight, but not so well in dim light.  Mostly I get blurs.  Oh well these are some of Leroy that are passable.

Down And Back

The rings are so small at Cobo, I do not know how the handlers manage with the giant breed dogs.  It seems like they just get going and then have to turn around, or turn the corner.

Leroy Being Stacked

Leroy is one handsome fellow.  After he showed, I was able to meet Leroy and pat his head.  He was not feeling the best, Cobo can have that effect on a dog, but he was still a sweetie.  I was struck by how small my hand was on his head, how big his paws were, and his soft and silky fur.  I am used to my big Chessie Thunder, but Leroy makes him look like small.    I am so glad I was able to meet him and I hope he is feeling better today.  It was also wonderful to meet his person Jen and chat a bit with the person behind the blog.  Hopefully someday soon we will run into each other again at a show, and this time Leroy will get a nice big ribbon!

Detroit Kennel Club Dog Show 2010

This past weekend was the Detroit Kennel Club Dog show at Cobo Hall in Detroit.  The brown dawgs were well represented.  On Sunday there were 54 Chesapeake Bay Retrievers entered.  Thunder, Thunder’s mom, and two of Thunder and Tule’s pups were entered.  Quite a family affair.

Thunder was the only one entered in his class (Hunting Dog).  Despite his playful movement around the ring, the Judge gave him a pink first place ribbon and he won a nice hunting vest for his handler.  He then advanced to the Best of Breed Competition where he moved much better.

Thunder’s mom took Best Veteran in the Sweepstakes so she got a huge ribbon and a great print for a prize.  I saw that some formal pictures were being taken so I hurried up an snapped a picture.  Not the greatest photo, but a nice commemoration of the win.

Thunder and Tule’s pup Radar placed in both Puppy Sweepstakes and in the Bred by Exhibitor Class.  Good job Radar.

Another of Thunder and Tule’s pups, Smokey, placed in her class in Puppy Sweeps.  Smokey was also awarded Reserve Winner’s Bitch from the Bred By Exhibitor Class.  The Reserve Winner is the runner-up to the winner.  Nice job for 15 month old Smokey.

There were so many great Chessies, that I made a slide show of some of them.

It was a great day and we had fun visiting with all of the other dogs and meetings everyone who stopped by to say “Hi”.

Congratulations to all of the winners!

The Detroit News wrote a  nice article about the show.  Prestigious extravaganza returns for dog owners

There was a lot to see at this show.  Of course there was the traditional Conformation judging where each dog is judged against the breed standard.  Many different breeds were entered and judged and the winner was awarded Best in Show.  The DKC Show holds a full day of competition on both Saturday and Sunday with winners being declared on each day.

This year a Toy Poodle named Walker won Best in Show both days.  Detroit Free Press article about Walker   Chessies placed in the Sporting Group both days!  Yay for them!  The Group Competitions and Best in Show were filmed by ESPN and will be shown  4:30- 6 p.m. March 22 on ESPN2, and repeats on ESPN and ESPN2.

Agility

The Show also had Agility, Obedience, and Rally trials.  There was quite a large crowd watching these events.  In addition, there were all kinds of demonstrations  from Terrier Races to Leader/Service Dog Demonstrations to Doggie CPR Classes to Herding Dogs herding a bunch of ducks.

The DKC  is one of the few remaining “benched” dog shows.  A benched dog show means that the dogs must be present “on the bench” all through the show, except when they are in the ring competing.  The Westminster Kennel Club Show in New York City is a famous benched dog show.  Benched shows are great for the public because they can actually see the different kinds of dogs and speak to the breeders.  If someone is interested in purchasing a purebred dog as a pet, then I highly recommend attending a benched dog show.

Storm got to sit the show out, but we entered Thunder both days.  Thunder was invited to bench with the dogs from Storm’s Kennel. Irish’s Clover Leaf Kennels
They do a wonderful job of decorating their bench every year.  Also, they did very well in this year’s competition and brought home  a lot of first place blue ribbons.

Thunder at Cobo

Thunder at Cobo

Thunder did a great job and left each day with a ribbon (unfortunately neither were blue).    Thunder was wonderful with the crowd and children especially seemed to be drawn to him.  Thunder loves children, so he was happy for the attention.  We are planning to pursue Thunder’s Therapy Dog Certification.

He certainly had a ton of fun at the show and was sweet to everyone who approached him so he may make a great therapy dog.   Needless to say, he needed a long nap after his busy weekend.
