Park Day

We went to a local park the weekend Freighter was home to do some training.  Our local parks are not that interesting, but they do offer open space, some ponds and puddles in the Spring.

When we finished with the training, we threw Freighter some fun bumpers.  Of course he had to find the best way to splash his way to the bumper.

You may have noticed that Freighter squared up to the puddle and jumped in.  That is pretty typical of a young dog.  He will be learning to carry the line straight to the bumper.

Breaking Birds

dogloverofmax@gmail.com asked:

Just curious as to why the breaker bird still, can you sorta give me a real life scenario where this would be used? Also what do you typically hunt and do with them?

I’m not sure I understand the question, but I will do my best to answer.  :)

“Breaking” is the term we us for whenever a dog “breaks” its sit before it is released.  As you can imagine, a hunting dog needs to learn that sit means sit for its own safety, among other reasons.  You don’t want a dog to take off the minute it hears gunfire, sees a bird fall or a bird is flushed while upland hunting.

We constantly train our dogs to be steady (or to sit and stay).  Sometimes we use what we call “breaking birds” to do this.  These are bumpers or birds thrown in close proximity to a dog and/or from an unexpected direction.  The surprise can sometimes catch the dog off guard and really test the dog’s “sit”.  This is not unlike something that might happen during a day of hunting and birds may come from an unexpected direction or flush or fall close to the dog.

We had to do a live flyer breaking bird last week to get ready for the hunt test as Gambler decided he needed to leave early for the flyer in training. No sir you sit til your told to go!

Been there with Storm.  It was a Master test and the first series.  She broke and was out before she started.  :)

finnhoward asked:

How many times do you tend to do the same thing in practice like this?

It depends.  You want to get some training value out of what you do, you are not looking for perfection at that moment.  We  ran the breaking birds as back to back singles.  For some dogs, it might be difficult for them not to break their sit for the first bird and for some it might be the second bird.  For marks and blinds, if a dog does it perfectly, you probably would not run it again at that training session although you would probably run a similar set up on another day.  Many times when we are running marks, we will run them and then move over slightly and run again and then run some blinds.  Every time you run multiple marks and blinds in the same field, it can make it more difficult for the dog.

Thanks for the all of your questions and comments.  I appreciate them.  :)

This weekend we are supposed to finally have warmer weather.  We plan to visit both Freighter and Storm.  Its kind of like parents whose kids are away at school.  We will spend the whole day driving and visiting.  :)

Have a nice weekend!

Thunder really doesn’t want to go near a Canada goose. They are vicious birds. Not what you would call goodwill ambassadors.

True, however as Storm showed us last Fall, a goose is no match for a Chessie.

Misty Shores Chesapeakes asked:

Did he look up when the goose flew up?

No.  Actually, he was focused on the blind with the duck he was sent to pick up.  :)

Storm and her pups are doing well.  Sorry, I don’t have any pictures.  Here is a picture of Storm from March instead.

I understand Freighter had a tough week of training.  That is the way it goes some times with a young doggie.

Wordless Wednesday–New Bed

Thunder loves his new bed.  This is the first really puffy bed he has ever had.  He is 7 now and I noticed that he is not as comfortable sleeping on the floor as he used to be.  Once he gets on the puffy bed, he is out.

Of course every time he got up last weekend, that pup Freighter would get right on his bed.  Thunder would just look at me like: “Aren’t you going to kick that kid off?”

Why did Thunder have to sit out?

He had dental done on Thursday and had to have some gum overgrowth removed.  The vet wanted to allow it to heal before he was out picking things up in his mouth.  He did get out for a training day on Wednesday so he did not sit out long.

Many of you asked about the corn stalks and whether they bothered the dogs’ feet.  Many times when the dogs hunt pheasant, it can be in cut corn.  Corn has gaps between the stalks and as you can see in these pictures it is pretty broken down from the winter.  Eventually these fields will be planted so we won’t use them at all.

Thank you for all of the nice comments on my photos.  I am trying different focus settings.  These pictures were taken with different settings.

I may work more with the focus setting that I used for the last picture.  It lets you focus on the moving object and it is supposed to track it.  I need more practice with it to decide whether I like it.  The first and second pictures, I had to focus each frame.  It is hard to do with a fast moving subject as you can see in the second picture.

Have a great weekend!

Fun With Freighter

First some news!  Storm had her puppies yesterday.  Even though we weren’t involved in the whelping, it was a long stressful day.  (Maybe because we weren’t involved it was long and stressful.  :) )  She ended up needing a c-section late in the day.  There were a total of 12 puppies, but one did not make it.  The final count is 7 girls and 4 boys.  For those of you who asked about the ultrasound Storm had, it showed 10 puppies so we knew it would be a good-sized litter.  I guess that is why Storm was a good size too.  :)   We have been told Storm and pups are doing fine.  Sorry I don’t have a picture.

I was not able to visit many blogs in the hop yesterday and I was already behind from the weekend, so I hope you will bear with me as I catch up.

We had a wonderful visit with Freighter this weekend.  Our original plan was to pick him up and go to our cabin.  However, the weather turned very nasty and they were expecting freezing rain so we decided to bring Freighter home instead.  I was a bit worried about putting him and Thunder together since they have been apart for several weeks.  But they were fine and I think Thunder was actually happy to see Freighter.  Freighter did not seem to torment Thunder as much with puppy antics so they had a nice little visit too.

We wanted to get out and work Freighter a little.  He was ready to work because after sitting around the house a few hours, he was bouncing off the walls.  He has a lot of energy.  Also, there is a test in about a month.  He will not be ready for Seniors yet since our very late Spring means he has not yet begun to tackle the dreaded water blind and I am not sure where he is on doubles either.  Right now, our plan is to try to finish up his Junior title in May and look to Seniors later in the Summer or even early Fall.

We ran marks and blinds.  His training is coming along very nicely.  I will write more on his blind work another time, but for now here are some pictures of the marks we ran, which were long singles.  We had him on some ducks in preparation for the upcoming test, but we also used bumpers.

These pictures are from Saturday.  We went to a local park.  This park always has large water puddles in Spring.  We figured we could use them as running water.

On Sunday we went to Omega (where we have our training membership).  We had to be careful where we went because there is so much water this year, we did not want to get stuck on a muddy farm road.  We ended up in the same field as the week before.  We threw the marks into a cut corn field.  The first mark was a bit too easy for Freighter so his handler moved him back and ran him from the road.  This required him to go down a ditch and up again losing sight of the mark.  No problem for Freighter.  I took some pictures with my cell because it was snow showering too hard to use the good camera.  I was too far away to get good pictures with the cell.  Toward the end of the day, I was able to take out my camera and get some shots.

Freighter is much more difficult to photograph than Thunder, or even Storm.  I am trying some different focusing options to see if I can get more of the pictures I want.  I am also experimenting with some different lighting options for when it is cloudy or sunny.  My camera has many options so pictures will be a work in progress, especially where there is cover in the way.  :)

Our visit was much too short, but we were really happy with how his training is progressing.  Darrin is doing a wonderful job with him.  His handling is improving every time we see him.
