So is this training just to get him excited about retrieving? looks kind of like you’re throwing the bumper a little bit and then pulling freighter to bring it back to you?

Oh, Freighter! He looks like he’s concentrating and trying hard to get it right! I’m not sure if he knows what “it” is just yet but I wouldn’t be surprised if he did.
