Freighter had a fun weekend with his Sis, his Mom, and his Grandmother. Cindy sent along this picture of Freighter and Sunny hanging out chewing their antlers.
As I understand it, there was not too much mischief. 😆 Many thanks to Cindy and Gary for watching Freighter this weekend while we worked our club’s hunt test and for sharing this great picture.
As for the hunt test, it was steaming hot in that field. I am glad we did not bring Freighter because I don’t think it would have been too much fun for him. When you work, you really don’t have much time to take care of a pup. You also don’t have any time to take pictures of your dogs running the test and you really don’t get to watch much of the test or see the set-ups, (or maybe I am loosing my touch for multitasking).
It was Thunder and Storm’s first Master test and neither fared too well. The first series was a land triple with a shot flyer as the go bird and an honor. Thunder did fine on the triple. He had to be handled on the middle mark which was a bit tricky because it was on a rise and under a tree. Unfortunately he decided to cause some mischief and broke the honor by getting up and taking a couple of steps. It was a bit of a surprise because he is usually steady. Thunder’s handler gave him a “no”, which is a no-no so they were out. Maybe a bit of handler error, but Thunder needs to know he cannot break that sit-stay so a verbal correction during a test may turn out to be valuable. All and all he looked much more confident running the triple, so we were happy with that. We can work on obedience. Still I would have liked to see him move on to the next series and try it because it was quite challenging.
Storm ran the triple with a handle on the middle bird, but was steady on the honor so she moved on to the second series. That series which was a double (one bird on land and one on water), and two blinds which went under the arc of the marks. Very challenging. I saw Storm run a bit of that and it looked like she was having trouble, but by some miracle she was called back to the third series which was a walk-up triple, a diversion shot and a blind. (I think I have that right, but I really did not have time to watch much.) She was kind of a mess on this and really wasn’t working very well for her trainer/handler. She ran the entire test, but did not pass. Yep, Storm knows how to cause mischief. Thanks to the judges and my fellow club members for putting on a great test and to Darrin for taking Storm through all three series.
There aren’t any more Master tests until the end of July and Storm is due to come into season when she will be bred. No sense leaving her with the trainer right now, so we will pick her up next weekend and work on her training to see if she will work better for her owner. (She wasn’t working that great for him either this Spring, which is why she went back to the trainer.) Storm also needs one Seasoned pass for her HR title so maybe we can work that in before she comes into season.
At least one family member did well this weekend. Thunder’s daughter, (Freighter’s mom), won Best of Opposite Sex at the supported entry at the Genesee County Kennel Club Show. Congrats Smokey and Cindy!
So that is a very long recap of the weekend and all of the mischief. I was hoping to sit down and catch up on your blogs last night, but our cable and internet went out (OH THE HORROR!). I took that as a sign and since I was dog-tired, went to bed early.
This is a Blog Hop. Thanks to Alfie’s Blog, Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Luna, a Dog’s Life, and My Brown Newfies for setting up this hop. Please go to any of the sponsoring blogs to find out who else has been mischievous.
I’m sorry to hear that neither Thunder nor Storm did as well as expected. I know you will use this as a learning opportunity to work on areas where you see the need. They will get it, I know they will. As you well know, some days it all clicks and other days it’s like you’re starting all over with a puppy! LOL
Happy Monday. 🙂
Reading your blog makes me so ignorant, but not in a bad way. I’m learning, this is a total new world for me. For instance, I thought that the person handling whatever to the dogs was always the owner, clearly it isn’t and it makes total sense, I can’t picture my dog obeying someone else.
I know the feeling of fighting with the internet well. Sounds like you had a long hot weekend and I don’t blame you for just going to bed. I wish Freddie Spaghetti and Gobble Guts Gloria would take to the deer antler like Freighter, but they just don’t seem to care about them. 🙁 Thunder is definitely the mischief maker for today for sure! All in all it’s still training and they still learn from their mistakes, right! 🙂
Hey Guys,
I know your Mum was disappointed with you both, but I’m really impressed with your Mischief!! Tee Hee – probably best I don’t tell your Mum that 🙂
Have a fun day all,
Your pal Snoopy 🙂
Internet woes are so very frustrating! Glad you got it back.
Sounds like a weekend full of productive mischief, anyway! Experience is still valuable. Maybe when you switch it up again, Thunder will perform
I still have a lot to learn about all this. Sorry the two pups didn’t do as well as you expected. Good thing there is always some sort of mischief going on in order to make us laugh!
I know how frustrating it can be when a dog performs really well normally but doesn’t do so well during a test. But it was a great learning experience! 🙂
Sorry the dogs didn’t do to well, but remember what I said last time about that. 🙂 Great that Freighter had a nice place to stay for the weekend so you didn’t have to worry about him! He looks very content with his antler!
Sorry Thunder and Storm didn’t do too well. I’m sure they’ll improve before next time. At least Thunder’s daughter did well!
Happy Monday!

I have wanted to try an antler with Pip, but his teeth aren’t great so I am always nervous about giving him new things. They look very happy on their beds with their antlers!
So it sounds like Freighter had a great weekend and Congrats to Smoky and Cindy who did a great job!!
Keep at it Brown Dawgs. We think you are very smarted and talented. You are also very photogenic. 🙂

I agree with the handler’s assessment. Sometimes it’s better to take an NQ than to let them develop bad habits.
Congrats to Freighter’s mom!
Hey Freighter, Jet here.
Just between us… sounds like Thunder and your Mom worked super hard this weekend, while you lounged in the lap of luxury… I vote for your weekend!!! well… maybe running and searching would be super cool, too….
BTW… thanks to you, JJ is so bouncy, Dr. Shaffer was impressed by her recovery so far! 🙂
Sorry to hear that Thunder and Storm had trouble with their tests, but darn, those are complex at the Master level! I’ve only been in a couple of hunt tests, but like your handler, at that level I’d rather correct my dog and take a hit on the test – I think that either way, correcting or breaking honor, you’ll take a hit.
