This week seemed to fly by.  Between interesting training encounters and unexpected auto repairs, the weekend snuck up on me.  I have not even shared any pictures of Thunder and Storm from last weekend’s training.  It was such a beautiful day, but it was bright and sunny which made pictures earlier in the day kind of tough.  Once the sun moved, I was able to get some nice pictures.

We ran water blinds and a nice water triple which I will share another day.  We also ran a long, and rather challenging, single mark.  I am not going to even try to diagram it.  The bumper landed on the land on the far side of the pond.  It required a slight angle entry into the pond, then the dog had to swim the pond, exit and jump in the smaller pond, swim that, exit and then pick up the bumper.  The difficult part was getting the dogs to carry the line which took them through the small pond.  Many dogs had to be handled when they saw the smaller pond because their inclination was to cheat around the edge of that smaller pond.  We want them to carry the line through the small pond.  So they were handled into the small pond.

Thunder was up first.

In the next picture, the arrow shows the mark.  You can see that Thunder is taking the correct line to the mark.  You cannot see the smaller pond, but it is in between the large pond and the mark.

He was still OK even once he exited the large pond, but he wanted to cheat around to the right so as to avoid the small pond.  He was handled into that pond and that sort of confused him.  He lost the mark so he was handled to it.  That is OK.  It was a technical mark and he got pretty far so we were happy with his work.

Storm started to get a bit confused when she hit the point of the island on her way over so she was handled from there.  Long swims are not a favorite for Storm.  However since we are teaching, handling her was OK.  Once she got through the small pond, she had no trouble grabbing the bumper.

We are supposed to have another hot weekend.  We have plans to train this weekend.  Hopefully the weather won’t cut it short.

And Storm came into season.  Hunt tests are over for her this year.  Phooey!

Have a nice weekend.

  1. Looks like an overall good training session. So now that Storm’s in season, will you be breeding her soon? Do you have a daddy picked out? 🙂

    1. We co-own her with her breeder and he is breeding her. I believe he has her boyfriend picked out…lol. One of his studs. If all goes well, puppies happen 63 days or so after the breeding.

  2. I am always impressed with the work your dogs do. They are (IMO) amazing and I think you and your husband and trainer all do an amazing job.

Now that Storm is in season, how are you housing her with Thunder in the house? I imagine it can be a little challenging. 🙂 And if you are having puppies will they be at your house or the breeders? If they are at your house can I come over and play? LOL

    1. Dh had to be reminded to stand in the sun when handling because the dogs could not make out his handles when he was standing in the shade. See even the people get trained…lol.

When Storm is in season, we keep her and Thunder separate, including where we potty them. The first 10 days or so is not too bad on Thunder, but at some point it is tough for him. No we won’t be having the puppies at our house. 😆 Too stressful. When it is time, Storm will be having the pups at her breeder’s place and then come back once the pups are weaned.

  3. That was a long swim! Even with them being handled, it looks like the sessions went well over all, since they came back with the bumpers.

  4. Great training session! I hope that everything goes well with Storm’s breeding:) I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed!

    1. Thanks. I hope so too. I am just a bit bummed because I would have liked to see her run that Finished test next weekend.

  5. This something unrelated to the post, but I came to it cuz I was going to ask if it is the first time you you gonna breed Storm, went to her page and read the pedigree, I’m getting Doggy’s and it looks all too confusing, as confusing as this comment, anyway, my question is the same, is the first time you gonna breed Storm?

    1. Pedigrees can be confusing. 🙂 But to answer your question, yes it will be her first breeding. We are lucky in the Chessie world because we have a very dedicated person who keeps track of all of the dogs pedigrees and all of the breeding (provided she is able to access the information). There are a few holes way back in the beginning, but through her database, I can trace our dogs’ pedigrees back to the very earliest Chessies.

  6. Looks like I am not the only busy one these days… Boarding here has been pretty darn full through July and still now, and now training clients are picking up. We have had much of the same weather woes, hope it doesn’t keep you from training. Least you have water to work in.

So sorry about the poorly timed season call, Luna has a tendency to do that too.
    Keep up the good work

    1. Thanks for stopping by. We were hoping Storm would make it another couple of weeks since we had her entered in a couple of tests. As you say, they always seem to time it right.

  7. You have great dogs. They are beautiful. They love the water don’t they. Looks like the training is paying off.

  8. I’ve said it before… I think I would cheat. They are such good dogs. I am always impressed.
    Blessings,
    Goose

  9. Are you planning on breeding Storm? I have had many people inquire about upcoming litters since we don’t have any and would pass along info if you are. Pics and blog is great as usual.

    1. Thank you for the offer. That is very nice of you. We are not breeders so we we won’t be breeding her ourselves. I would find it too stressful. lol

  10. Yay – Glad you’re having lottsa fun guys!! We had a busy week too and I’m also surprised how fast it went!! 🙂

    Big Wags to all,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

  11. Hey Storm, Hey Thunder, Jet here. Hi Miss Linda.

We’re finally starting to catch up on visits… your pictures really help us understand all your training. Gosh Storm and Thunder, you both are exceedingly talented and super smart.

I must confess, I’m a tad jealous that your natural swimming grounds are so beautiful… as you know, my canal is pawesome in my book, but, a bit dangerous in Mom’s and swamp smelly!

  12. Great job for the brown dogs! Sad that Storm won’t be entered in the test next weekend, but that’s women for ya eh? LOL

  13. oh – what memories this brings back to my peep from years ago! such fun they had training! looks a lot like the training park they had too! great job!

  14. Great pictures and looks like it was a good training day even with a little handling. I can understand wanting to skip the little pond 🙂 Sometimes the timing of coming in to season can really be bad. Good Luck with breeding!
