Yesterday we planned to do some water training, but the weather did not cooperate. Temperatures were in the 40’s and the wind chill, (you read correctly wind chill in May), was in the 20’s. It was so cold and windy that we broke out our winter coats, hats and gloves and decided to do some land blinds and land marks instead.
You can see how hard the wind was blowing from the orange tape on the blind stake.
The wind made blinds a challenge for Thunder. Whistles were not as easy to hear and there are lots of smells to pull a dog off line.
Despite the cold and wind, Thunder did a good job taking a nice long initial line and most of the casts. These were long blinds meant to stretch his distance.
Any whistle refusals he had were near the end of the blind where he ignored a couple of sit whistles. Since it was so windy, once he got near the bumper it was easy to smell where it was and the wind made it hard to know if could actually hear the whistle. Reinforcing that sit whistle is something to work on.
Overall, we were happy with his work, but not happy with our return to winter. One of these days, maybe warm weather will be here to stay!

Back into the lower 50’s for us here too! Glad you were able to get out and work despite the wind and cold. At least it wasn’t snow as some others seem to be getting. Ah those whistle sits are something I should work on with both (now that Luna probably won’t be going back into the field) they sure can be hard for the pups to want to do lol.

Ohhhhhhhhhh yessssssssss it’s cold!! Great job!
love the sit photo. it was cold and very windy here too. we did train also yesterday. it was 27 degrees when i got up this am.
Sounds to me like our Saturday weather blew over to you! It is still cold but going to be back to 70’s starting later today…mom is tired of having to turn the heat on. Us dogs don’t seem to really care but it bugs the humans.
Gosh it does look windy and cold. They are predicting another Summer wash out over here. That will make it three Summers in a row. I hope they got it wrong. Have a marvellous Monday.
Best wishes Molly
Ugh, the weather is mischievous all over. We had a pretty great weekend but they are promising the cold will get to us tomorrow. Good for you to modify the plans but still get some valuable training done and great pics for your blog!
I think Thunder did a great job with the conditions.
Blessings,
Goose
We had a chilly and windy weekend here too! Not at all what I was hoping for! I bet Thunder was enjoying training in the cooler weather!
Great job Thunder…if I got that far away from moms with all that cool stuff to sniff, I wouldn’t remember to sit…I probably wouldn’t come back till I was good and done!
Gosh I can feel that cold from here…All that wind must play havoc with the scent of the bumper, so good job Brown Dawgs on your retrieves…The water level in your pond looks awfully high…Is that rain or snow melt?
I can see how his job could be made a bit more difficult by the wind. I bet Thunder didn’t mind the cold weather, though. 🙂
Yikes!
In here we are already in the 100’s, I didn’t even have time to get my summer clothes from the storage.
It’s cold here, too. I wanted a decent spring, but this is crazy!
You can tell by the pictures that is just that cold. Brrr. In May, I can’t believe it. Hope it warms up for you this week!
Brrrr, I hope you get warmth soon. We finally did.
Oh my, that certainly does look like a chilly day! Glad you were able to get out and do some work though. There are always things to perfect and learn, no matter how long you’ve been training. Your pictures capture the moment perfectly, as always! Hoping the warmies return soon for you all! 🙂
Rooo not easy to sniff out those bumpers with all that wind so I say good work! *Waggy tail*
That looks like some fun training! We’ve had a little chill the past couple of days as well!
I can see how that would be a training determent. It got super cold here overnight too and tonight they are expecting some areas to go below freezing! Crazy, crazy weather for May.
Lots of crazy spring weather all over!
The weather is weird all over I think but I enjoyed your blog and the pictures!!!
I love that whistle sit photo!
Hope that wind dies down over there!
I can almost feel the chill in the air from these pictures! We are having similar weather, but it is supposed to be warmer tomorrow. We will try to send the warm weather your way.
Your pal, Pip
We’ve had a rainy time here with low temps too! We now have a really sunny day but my mama is sick now from all these changes.
Oh my goodness that is COLD! It’s pretty hot over here right now.
Gosh it’s already hot here! Yuck! Grass is always greener on the other side though :). Thunder did amazing! That would be some pretty tough conditions I’d think for any pup but he did great! Yea Thunder!!!
Good, Doggy! Bad, Mother Nature!
That’s just cruel and unusual in May! (I won’t tell you our high temp here in San Diego yesterday, but it was the exact opposite weather and crazy summer-hot!)
Luckyq Thunder is a well built dog, if he was as skinny as a twig, the wind might had blown him away 😉
40 degrees??? brrr!!! i’m cold when it’s in the 70’s! BOL
wags, bailey
Yikes, do you guys live in the North Pole? 🙂
It’s been super warm here for ages, last weekend it was in the 90s again – I’ll send some Sun your way! 🙂
Wags to all
Your pal Snoopy 🙂
Oh for goodness sake! Would you like some of our sunshine? Actually, our seasons are a bit stuffed up too – it poured overnight and we are officially in the ‘dry’ season… but I think that’s because I fixed the automated garden sprinkler system a couple of days ago.
Any more puppy pics?? 🙂
I am sorry I don’t have new puppy pictures. 🙁
Looks like he did a good job. Love the one with the bumper rope across his nose 😉
