We did some group training on the 4th. One of the set-ups was a super long blind of 240 yards. This blind required the dogs to navigate the side of a hill, pass a clump of trees and cross roads. The purpose of this blind was to work on the handler’s control over the dog at a distance.
Thunder has not done blinds this long, but it was a good chance to try.
Thunder just could not get past the clump of trees. His handler worked and worked.
Thunder just would not take the back cast to get past the trees.
The last time Thunder went into the trees, he came out with something. What was it? Do we really want to know? Turns out it was a pigeon. Someone may have lost a training bird in those trees. Once a hunting dog, always a hunting dog. Turn a hunting dog loose in a field and they will usually come up with a bird if there is one. That bird sure caused Thunder some mischief and he didn’t finish the blind.
I didn’t take a picture of Thunder with the bird, but here is a picture of Thunder as he completed a land blind yesterday.
Storm also tried the blind. It took some time and effort, but with the bird removed from the field, she actually got all the way out there.
We have a hunt test coming up in a couple of weeks. We are training hard in preparation.

Sounds like Thunder knew he wanted and was going to check that pigeon no matter what!
Way to go thunder. The nose knows! At a hunt test Norman was running a blind jumped into the blind planting station and grabbed a bird. They gave the pass to him cuz he did bring back a duck. Nice job storm.
LOL excellent job Norman!
I doubt they would have passed Thunder since he was pretty far off line and near out-of bounds.
Love that picture of him on the whistle sit…so attentive. Good for Storm and good luck with the tests.
Thanks. We need it!
LOL Thunder and the pigeon. Clever boy. Have a marvellous Monday.
Best wishes Molly
Sounds like mischief on the pigeon to me. Hee-hee
Well, even though he didn’t find what he should of at least he found something!
Oh yes, I can imagine a hunting dog would hone in on a bird! I remember Storm and that goose last year (at least I think it was a goose.) :0
Yep a goose. 🙂
Pigeon mischief! Great shots. Love that last one of Storm. Good luck on the test!
Thank you. 🙂
Aw lol! That’s awesome! Great job Thunder 😉 Even if you weren’t supposed to retrieve the pigeon hehe
Her expression seems to say “THAT’S how it’s done, Thunder. Leave it to the ladies!”
Hi Y’all!
Good boy Thunder! You knew there was a bird there…silly humans don’t know diddly! That’s why we’re Chessies and not some other breed of retriever!
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
Wow that’s a long blind…do you typically have blinds that long in your tests?
A for effort and ingenuity, Thunder and great job, Storm! I can’t wait to hear how the test goes. 🙂
I know Thunder didn’t follow the directions, but I think he did a great job. You sent him out and he did not come back till he had something to bring. Good job to storm for finding the real blind. I may be wrong but I would think they would not enjoy working blinds. They seem a little frustrating:/
Fantastic jobs you guys are such hard workers, quite different from pugs for sure
urban hounds
Good job guys! He knew there was a bird in there 😉 That would have still been acceptable at a test wouldn’t it, as long as he returns with something?
Getting a little distracted hey Thunder? Tee Hee
Have fun
Your pal Snoopy 🙂
Always! 🙂
Good luck with all the training for your test!
Thanks Marcie!
I imagine bushes can house all kind of tempting distractions. Better luck next time I guess. Hey, at least he brought SOMETHING back 🙂
Good luck on the hunt test, the guys look great.
Thanks Robert. 🙂
