It’s Follow-up Friday.  The blog hop that:

Let’s you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend.

Thank you to Jodi from Heart Like A Dog and co-host Sand Spring Chesapeakes for hosting the hop!  It gives me an opportunity to answer reader questions from this past week.

Follow-up Friday 10-25-13

Gizmo commented:  Great wrapup…interesting that it’s the DNR who plants the corn for the duck hunters…I don’t think that’s done around here by anyone…Hunters can bait fields for dove hunting, but I never heard of anyone baiting for ducks

It is not considered baiting because you are hunting in standing or flooded crops.  According to US Fish and Wildlife, it is illegal to bait for waterfowl.  Baiting defined as : “Baiting is the direct or indirect placing, exposing, depositing, distributing, or scattering of salt, grain, or other feed that could lure or attract waterfowl to, on, or over any areas where hunters are attempting to take them.”

Also from US Fish and Wildlife:  “Agricultural lands offer prime waterfowl hunting opportunities. You can hunt waterfowl in fields of unharvested standing crops. You can also hunt over standing crops that have been flooded. You can flood fields after crops are normally harvested and use these areas for waterfowl hunting. Hunting waterfowl over a crop that has not been harvested but that has been manipulated (rolled/disced) is considered baiting under current regulations.”

There are all sorts of US Fish and Wildlife regulations and you can read them here.

Remember it is a managed waterfowl area.  The crops are planted as habitat for waterfowl.  Waterfowl hunting season starts in October and ends the beginning of December.  The rest of the time the crops provide habitat for the ducks and other animals.

Jodi asked:  Since your dogs are hunting dogs and have a high prey drive, does that small animal prey drive pertain to the cat as well?

Thunder and Storm are OK with her.  We have to keep an eye on Freighter because things were a bit tense between them.  I have heard that Freighter’s dad was not good with cats so we have been very careful.  Finally after almost two years, I think they are starting to be pals and Freighter doesn’t see her as prey.

Monday Mischief–Just Like Grandpa

Donna and the Dogs commented:  Toby likes to steal mine too. He never eats them, just mouths them, so I let him get away with it.

Must be a retriever thing, although Storm does not do it.  Mine never eat or chew either.  They just wait until I am trying to put on a shoe or have taken one off and then swoop in for the steal.

I do draw the line at socks though.  Freighter is the only one who ever showed any interests in socks and then he would claim them as his.  I was fairly stern with him on the “leave it” because I was afraid he would swallow one.  Now if he sees I dropped a sock, he sits next to it and gets a treat.  🙂

Freighter’s mom is Thunder’s daughter.  But don’t worry about not knowing relations.  I doubt most people follow pedigrees.  🙂  All our dogs have common ancestors.  Storm’s father is Thunder’s great-grandfather, (and would be Freighter’s great-great-grandfather).  Storm is from a different breeder than Thunder and Freighter, but Thunder and Freighter go back to Storm’s breeder’s dogs, (if that makes sense?).

Each dog’s pedigree is on their page (thanks to ChessieInfo.Net).  This is Freighter’s pedigree.

Dirty undies Emma?  Really?  😆

Tasty Tuesday–Smiling Dog Freeze-Dried Treats

Jodi asked: Wow, those treats are right up my alley!! I love them. I wonder if they are available locally?  I have to say, Freighter looks so much like Delilah when he is focused on a treat. :-D It almost looks like his eyes are crossed.

I have not seen them locally, but you might want to give Natural Pet Warehouse a try.  Of all three dogs, Freighter is the most focused on food.  Growing boy, I guess.

Nestle is an indoor kitty and never goes out.  🙂

Anybody wondering what Nestle was looking at in this picture?

This guy was hanging out at the feeder and did not mind me being fairly close as long as I was on the other side of the screen.

This ‘N That Thursday–Halloween Edition

Thanks to everyone who stopped by yesterday and/or participated in the hop.  That was a lot of fun. I am totally jealous of all of you who were able to see Oingo Boingo perform back in the day!

The link is open until Saturday so I will draw a winner after it closes and have the result next week.

Many commented on the dogs’ expressions.  You might find it interesting that Freighter was actually the least cooperative.  I finally badgered convinced him to sit still so I could get a couple of pictures.  Treats worked wonders for his expression.

Freighter Kept Taking The Head Piece Off
Freighter Kept Taking The Head Piece Off

Thunder and Storm were already a bit miffed before we started because hubby was off hunting with Freighter.  We are fairly close to state land and there were several hunters in the area so they periodically heard shots in the distance which just made them more annoyed.

Hey Thunder, I Am Over Here!

I supposed they were thinking: “Why are we sitting here with this stuff on us when there are birds to be retrieved”.

I suppose I will see the sourpusses all weekend, because Freighter went off hunting with Hubby.

Finally, I took my best shot at carving a pumpkin with a stencil this year.  The few kids who braved the rain last night seemed to like it.

  1. Wow! First off that is one amazing pumpkin you carved…love it!! Thunder and Storm looked like they were into dressing up for Halloween about as much as we were. lol We wondered if they were wishing they were hunting with Freighter. We really enjoyed all the pictures of sweet Nestle. We liked the dogs and the slippers too. As always fantastic follow-up. Hugs and nose kisses you all have a wonderful weekend.

  2. Love you pumpkin. We did ours too early and what was a spooky cat dried out and looked like a dead squirrel by yesterday which was right up my street LOL. Have a fabulous Friday.
    Best wishes Molly

  3. Thanks so much for joining the blog hop and answering my questions! You had a great follow-up here. I still can’t believe your dogs wore those head bands. Mine would never do it. Delilah tries to pull them off and Sampson would just lie down and pout. LOL

    Have an awesome weekend!

  4. Your pumpkin is awesome! You just need to make 2 more 🙂

Our black cat, Isaac, does try to get out sometimes, but we do our best to keep him in – since he was a stray in the area, I think he likes to revisit old haunts. But even he has standards. Last Sunday it was quite literally blowing a blizzard (we had a winter storm warning and got 20 cm/7 inches of snow), and he dashed out as I was letting Moses back in. He took about 4 steps in the snow, paused, meowed with dissatisfaction, and hustled right back inside.

  5. I did read the pedigree page once, long ago, but I forget my pedigree history, so can’t remember other dogs 🙂 Most of us GBGVs in the US are related somehow too since we are pretty rare and came from mostly 2 or 3 breeders in the UK and Europe. As for dirty undies, I have always loved them but so far Bailie doesn’t share that passion. I’ll take undies over any other piece of clothing in a doggy heartbeat! TGIF!

  6. Great job on the pumpkin! Mine always come out really bad…Thank you for the explanation of the waterfowl baiting rules…I get it now

  7. I love the pictures that didn’t turn out quite right! I usually have to delete five photos for every good one, glad I’m not alone! Can’t blame them for wanting to go off & get in on the action though!

  8. No wonder Nestlé’s eyes were so big in that photo…those are big birds! You are lucky to see them on your feeder. We have them around but I’ve never seen one on my feeders.
Great job on the pumpkin carving….I love it!

  9. That picture of Thunder with the Halloween headband is priceless, and your jack-o-lantern is excellent. We also had rain for Halloween, but my humans and I were amazed by the number of trick or treaters (and their adults) who braved the elements. Real troopers! Have a great weekend!

  10. Hi Y’all!

Great follow up! Glad my Human didn’t try to dress me up!

Did y’all know for a long time my Human had to stop using treats as a training reward for me because I would chomp her hand along with the treat no matter how flat she held it! BOL!!! Yes, I think it’s funny! Don’t y’all?

Have a great weekend! (sourpusses and all)

    Y’all come by now,

  11. Beautiful follow up. Thanks for joining. The dnr has farmers plant stuff on the public land also. This year they planted i believe switch grass of some sort and let me tell you it is a bear to go through and the weed seeds are nasty to get out of the dogs coat. Not to happy with that. Have a great weekend.

  12. Those are some great shots of Nestle the kittie. One of my favorite past cats was an all black one I had named Midnight. He was just the sweetest thing (unlike the bratty/clingy/noisy male I have now, Cinder.) 🙂

  13. Thanks for the great follow-ups! We LOVE that pumpkin. Ours never, ever come out that good. 🙂
