The birds played mischief on Freighter this weekend. He spent the weekend watching and waiting for them to show up and they never did. The hunters set up in one area, and the birds were in another.
He went out hunting Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Here are some pictures:
Friday
The weather was cold and windy. They got a crummy number in the draw, but decided to make the best of it and took an area with a blind. Unfortunately there were no birds and no shots.
Saturday
Saturday was our club’s annual duck hunting tournament. Again, the hunters got a crummy draw. The weather was not much better on Saturday. Still cold. Still windy. No ducks.
Congrats to John and Allen and Thunder’s daughter Muddy who won again this year.
Sunday
Cold again. They decided to try their luck in the bay. There were a couple of ducks that came in, but they just couldn’t seem to hit them.
Even though he had no retrieves, Freighter would still rather be hunting than doing most anything else. Hopefully he can get out one more time this season. He has the watching and waiting down. It would be nice to get him on some birds.

Awe poor frieghter. Did such a good job watching. I love when they stick there heads out to look and make sure they didn’t miss anything. Beautiful pics. Didn’t know they hunted a place where there is a draw. Do they only hunt there or do thet have private or public places to hunt. Was this the clubs property or was rhis draw through the dnr? We don’t have that here.
It is a managed waterfowl area. We have several in Michigan and they are paid for by hunter’s dollars. The draw is for the spots in the managed area. (I posted a video about it on this post http://2browndawgs.com/2013/11/04/monday-mischief-watching-and-waiting/ ). The video explains how it all works if you are curious. It goes through the process for the draw. In addition hunters can access some public lands along the bay and of course Saginaw Bay itself. But for the Bay you need a boat.
Brrr…it does look cold out there, but Freighter looks so focused and happy! Congrats to the winner of the toy too! They are talking snow tomorrow night here. It won’t stay yet, but winter is coming.
We agree brrr looked well cold and windy. Pity you didn’t get any birds. Have a marvellous Monday.
Best wishes Molly
I can feel the cold and wind in those pictures. Poor Freighter, all that waiting and no reward. He’s very patient though, an admirable trait in a good hunting dog.
Brrrrrr! That looks like nasty weather out there! But Freighter sure looks happy. and those decoys look pretty happy too.
You’re a very patient doggie!! Ever thought about bringing a good book whilst you wait? 🙂
Wags to all,
Your pal Snoopy 🙂
Sounds like the weather and the ducks got together to play some mischief!
It looks so cold…brrrrrr….!
I love Freighter. He is a guy who loves his job!
It looks quite chilly in those photos…I think I would love it! It is always so hot here. Freighter looks like such the hunter. I feel bad he didn’t get to retrieve any birds this time around. The hunt photos are terrific!
Happy Monday!
Oz
Brrrrr. Freighter looks thrilled to be there though.
At first I thought it was snow! Thank goodness it wasn’t. I be the waiting is the hardest part for all involved. I hope Freighter has better luck on his next trip out.
Too cold for us, but Freighter looks totally ready to go! 🙂
Poor Freighter. Hope he gets some birds soon!
Oh my, I love that photograph of Freighter on his stand! He is so adorable and ready to go!
Poor Freighter and Sunny. They look so dejected. Better luck next time. Hopefully better weather as well. Your time will come Freighter and Sunny.
Darn! Watching and waiting is no fun at all. Poor Freighter and Storm look so eager, too. I agree with Nikitaland about that photo of Freighter on his stand. Too cute!!!
Questions, Linda – How long a time are you/dogs/your husband out there … waiting… ? Do the dogs get antsy? Give in to boredom and take a nap?
My husband says that they are out there 4-5 hours. Normally the best hunting is early morning or just before dark, but that is not always true. They get the morning spots until noon and the afternoon people come in at 1pm. It can be a lot of sitting around if there are no ducks flying. Then again, if you have a really good day and get your limit, you can be done very quickly. Yes the dogs get impatient. Freighter got very impatient. He is still young. Thunder and Storm have more experience and are better at sitting still. All our dogs like to watch the sky. Not all dogs do.
Love that picture of Freighter on his stand. Looks like perfect duck hunting weather (the more miserable, the better!), so I wonder where the birds were?
They were on the opposite side from where the hunters were…lol. They said they kicked up about 200 birds on the way into their spot and before hunting hours. Unfortunately, the birds never came back.
Are you still in the DNR managed area? If I understand it then, each day the hunters draw for which blind they’ll be using, is that right? Freighter looks so focused and patient on his stand…maybe next weekend will be better
The pictures from Friday and Saturday are from the managed area. The Sunday pictures are state land. The DNR runs two draws each day 7 days a week for the spots in the managed area. Usually there are more parties than spots. The hunters get to pick their spots in order of how they are drawn in the lottery.
Freighter, you’re much more patient than I would be. I hope you get some birds soon.
Such intense concentration. Hopefully next time!
Great Pictures. The dogs look happy. Why don’t the birds ever read the schedule?
Oh, man that looks so cold! I’m such a cold-wimp. I would be no good at the watching and waiting. But then, I’m not covered in all that lovely fur like Freighter and Sunny are! They look like they were having a good time, even if they didn’t get any birds.
Roooo I love reading about your hunts – I can almost taste the duck *Waggy tail*. Freighter looks like he’s concentrating real hard – bet he’s doing a pawsome job *Waggy tail*
what an alert exprssion, its clear you are doing a fantastic job
urban hounds
Hi Y’all!
Oh, I am so sorry Freighter. It is truly frustrating when you don’t see a live waterfowl. You are so lucky though, you actually get to retrieve them, not just “watch” while your humans shoots with a camera. Hope you get another shot at a hunt.
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
That’s too bad they didn’t have a successful weekend. It seems like they just enjoy being out there anyway…the dogs don’t look like they get bored with the waiting. Do they always stay that attentive….or do they ever just try to lay down and take a nap? 🙂 Is that a dumb question? I can just picture my beagles doing that though!
Congrats to Ku!
Sorry your duck hunting was a bust, that kind of weather usually draws them in.
Love the pictures of freighter in and getting out of the blind. Is it as windy and cold as it looks?
