It’s Follow-up Friday. The blog hop that:
Let’s you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend.
Thank you to Jodi from Heart Like A Dog and co-host Flea from Jones Natural Chews for hosting the hop!
Follow-up Friday is a chance to follow-up on posts or answer questions from the previous week.
Hunting Little Muscamoot Bay
Thunder never had an opportunity to retrieve when he was hunting this past Sunday. A check of the numbers showed that it was the best day so far this season for birds harvested from that managed area. Being near the reserve was the place to be on Sunday.
Thanks for all the nice comments on my new background.
Sand Spring Chesapeakes asked: I love your turkey day back ground. Was that a free wordpress background?
I got if from Dazzle Junction. Some fun backgrounds there.
Wordless Wednesday–Jewelry
Many questions about the bands.
Most of the bands were received along with a ribbon for a qualifying score at a hunt test. Some are from AKC clubs and some are from UKC clubs. Not all clubs give them, but for the ones that do, it is a nice memento of the day. A few were received when registering for a draw at the various DNR managed waterfowl areas. All of the bands are stamped with info on where they came from.
We display the bands on a lanyard hung on the wall in a room with all the dogs’ other ribbons and plaques. Thunder just stole it to show if off. These bands were earned by all the dogs and not just Thunder. 😉
This ‘N That Thursday
I understand that my co-host Ruckus the Eskie will be running a giveaway for This ‘N That Thursday–Thanksgiving Edition, so you will want to get your post together and stop by on the 28th to check out the details.
Jodi from Heart Like a Dog had a lot of great questions:
I love those photos! In one of them it looks like Thunder is jumping OVER Freighter! Did that really happen?
Yes I think he did. Thunder can jump really high when he wants to.
AND I’m awful jealous of that area right there, I think I could let Delilah off-leash there and not worry about her coming back as her big draw seems to be houses.
It is a great area to run the dogs. Cars can use that road, but they don’t very often.
Do you worry about the dogs dashing through the brush that way? I’m not sure if you read Rescued Insanity but Shiva had a nasty run in with something in the woods and ended up needing stitches. Hubby and I have been discussing vests for our guys, just for that extra chest protection.
We have a few rules. The dogs are not allowed out of sight. If they dash into the brush, we recall them, using the e-collar to get their attention as necessary. They have been working on recalls a very long time and these walks are not that much different from when they are out hunting grouse and woodcock. Usually they come right back when called. It looks like there are a lot of downed branches, but there is also a lot of clear area where they can run. It is a bit of an optical illusion because I am walking on the road and they are running to the side.
We worry about injury, but since they are hunting/performance dogs, some of it goes with the territory. Poor Shiva had a very unfortunate accident. Hopefully she is getting better. There are vests they make for upland dogs to protect their chests from brush. I am not sure it would protect against something that was very sharp. I guess if we saw a problem then we would consider one, but while our dogs might get a little scrapped up on their underside, usually their fur keeps it from being too bad and the cover here is not like it is out west.
We also have an extensive first aid kit. It is something I urge all dog owners to have and keep up to date. Hubby has a smaller version he takes with him when he waterfowl hunts and we have a larger version that goes with us when we take the dogs in the car. We have attended a few first aid seminars geared toward hunting dogs and the types of injuries they might sustain in the field. A serious injury may require a visit to the ER vet, but at least we have some idea what to do to help the dog on the way and hopefully that will keep the panic at bay. 🙂
Today is opening day of firearm deer season. This means that our “walks” in the forest will be suspended until December. It also means that grouse is closed until December 1. Woodcock closed the beginning of November. No surprise there because I think they have all gone south anyway.
Waterfowl is open, but we are going to try our luck with pheasant tomorrow. I really hope it doesn’t rain because I want to try to get some decent pictures.
Have a nice weekend!

Those bands are so cool. We can see them now with the close up.
Have a fabulous Friday.
Best wishes Molly
I really like the band idea, that is super cool! I’ve been thinking about the dangerous brush we have been encountering too after Shiva’s accident. I thought for sure I was going to poke an eye out the other day when walking with Leroy through the woods! He would stop if he got stuck on a branch and wait for me to help him but if I got stuck he kept going!
LOL its about the same here!
That close up of the bands is great, we had no clue that they had stuff on them. Really neat. So, I’m hoping there is a turkey being given away on the 28th, or maybe a wabbit…I will have to check that out.
Great follow up! Thank you for explaining the beads…and for the close up photo. Those are cool little mementos to have. Good luck with the hunt this weekend! We are looking forward to some more great photos!

Thanks for joining the blog hop and answering my questions. Now I have another. 😀 Have you done a post on what you carry in your emergency kit? (Now that I’m thinking of it, I think you have. I’m going to have to find it.) I think it’s a good idea to refresh my mind every once in a while as I need to get one together for us. So tell me what does Hubby carry in the smaller version?
Thanks again and I hope you have a great weekend!!
I should do a new one because I have changed a few things over the year. These are great starter first aid kits.

This is the one he puts in with his waterfowl gear because it is a waterproof case. He might add EMT gel.

I noticed they have one specifically for wounds. Might be something to look into.
I’m crazy about that top photo of Thunder! And how could I miss your dog jewelry post?! Gotta backtrack for that one for sure. Firearms deer season opens here tomorrow, so all our critters will be cooling their heels near the house/barn. Have a great weekend!
I do love your new background. Thanks for the link to more! My site is dull.
Those bands are so cool. What a neat idea! And we love, love, love the shots of your beautiful dogs in action. 🙂
I love the whole band jewelry idea. And I really enjoy seeing the dogs out running free and discovering new “treasures”. Hope you have a good, rain-free weekend!
I love the new background, too!
The bands look like such a cool idea. Like you said, they must be a nice memory of the day!
Follow-up Friday was made for my mommy, who is way behind on her reading. 😉 Thanks for the explanation on the bands. Very interesting, and quite stylish!
It’s hard to prepare for every thing that can go wrong with our dogs…same as with kids! We just try to be as safe and prepared as we can, and hope for the best. We do carry a first aid kit in the car….not that we travel much with the dogs, but I’ve had it since my pet sitting days.
I hope I can join the Thanksgiving hop…such a busy week, but maybe I can get ahead on things!
I love your background too and the pictures of your dogs. If I let my dogs off leash like that they would never come back! I’m jealous!
Great shots and info!
Hi Y’all!
Happy hunting! Have a great weekend!
Our woods in the south here has lots of downed stuff to jump and for my Human to stumble over or go around. BOL!
My Humans don’t let me out of sight either!
Y’all come back now!
Hawk aka BrownDog
Aww – I love the photos of all three dogs just out romping together! So cute!
Thank you for getting me the link to where you got the cool background. Now I just have to figure it out, lol. Beginning of deer season, does Jim hunt? Our season starts next Saturday both John and I hunt. The dogs have been getting used to heeling on a road and sitting when we see a car coming. Where we hunt in the marsh if we don’t want to walk back thru the marsh we go down the road, it doesn’t get much traffic but when it does we make sure to recall them and sit them and they all have been doing really well with that. My first aid kit is full with a skin staplers for all those altercations that I hope not to have.
Hubby usually just hunts muzzle loading season which is in December. Too many crazies on state land for firearm. He likes to bow hunt, but it interferes with waterfowl and grouse. LOL he can’t do it all. I think I may invest in a skin stapler. I imagine that could come in handy.
Looks like I was wrong. Now hubby will be hunting over Thanksgiving weekend. He can’t wait for muzzle loading season…lol.
What a lot of bands. Hope Shiva is okay. You sound like you’re prepared for emergencies.
Roooo I really like the bands! I wonder if I could do something similar with worn out tennis balls *waggy tail*
We don’t have a dog first aid kit and I wouldn’t know what needs to go in there. Have to say though, we don’t have the kind of terrain that the brown dogs get to adventure in 🙂 Cute background ^__^
That’s really neat that you have mementos with the bands. That would be fun to look back and see all the adventures the dogs have had.
