It’s Follow-up Friday.  The blog hop that:

Let’s you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend.

Thank you to Jodi from Heart Like A Dog for hosting the hop!

Follow-up Friday is a chance to follow-up on posts and answer questions from the previous week.  Thanks for all of the great questions and since I was out-of-town last week, these are questions from the last two weeks.

Follow-up Friday 11-22-13

haopee2 asked:  This is the first time I’ve seen a hunter? Is it fun? What happens to the birds? Do you eat them? Also, what’s flushing… is it like flushing out the birds so they fly away?

The brown dawgs favorite things is to be out hunting. :) The humans eat most of the birds.

Flushing is finding the birds and getting them to fly up so they can be safely shot by the hunter.

Monday Mischief–Catching Snowballs

Ruckus the Eskie asked: Hilarious snowball fights you pups! Do you get those nasty mats like I do in your underparts?!

Snow does not really stick on the brown dawgs’ for long.  Their coat is thick and short underneath so they usually don’t get burrs stuck in it either.  Then once the snow melts, it is a shake or two and they are mostly dry.

Young Dogs On Birds

A hunt is just a walk in the woods unless the dog knows what it is looking for.

Except for Storm.  A walk in the woods in never just a walk in the woods.  She is always hunting.  Always working.  Storm loves to hunt.

For upland hunting unlike waterfowl, the dog’s job is to find the birds in what may be vast acreage.  But finding the birds is just part of their job.  They have to “flush” the birds and then retrieve the downed birds.  The trick is to get them to put looking for the birds-flushing them-gunshot-retrieve all together in their heads and that comes with plain old experience.  So we try to work with them and hunt them when we get the chance of it.

Follow-up Friday–Wrestling Match

mini597 asked:  Do they ever play too rough and hurt each other?

We watch them and if it looks like they are getting too rough, we would break it up.  But Freighter and Storm really seem to like to play together and so far we have not had to break them up.  We used to let Thunder and Storm wrestle, but the weight difference is a bit too much.  Thunder weighs 25 pounds more than Storm and one time he slammed into her and hurt her.  He was just playing, but we decided that it is not worth a trip to the vet.  We allow Thunder and Freighter to chase but not to wrestle.  We could see that escalating with two intact males trying to get the best of the other.

Monday Mischief–Snow Face

Daydreamer asked:  Have you written a post about chessies as a breed? I would love to read that :)

I used to have information on a page at the top of my blog, but it got little traffic and I needed the space so I replaced it.  Perhaps I can revise it and use it as a post.  Thanks for the great idea.  Look for that in January.  🙂

Storm Makes Her Own Kind Of Fun

It was fun reading about everyone’s favorite toys.  Many said their pups liked the kong wubba.  Santa may have to bring one of those for Christmas, but ssh don’t tell.

Storm was standing just staring at a cabinet at the cabin.  The cabinet has a glass door.  She must have seen the kong.  She just had to have it.  At 6 1/2 she still likes her toys.

weliveinaflat asked:  Where are Thunder and Freighter while she was at it?

I think one was in the bedroom and one was outside with hubby.  Can’t remember who was where.  Our cabin is small so two dogs with toys would be a disaster.

Jodi asked:  Does she ever throw it herself?

She tries but that is discouraged in the house. Just like wrestling…no no in the house.  🙂

This ‘N That Thursday

Thanks for the compliments on the tree, but part of the credit goes to the nice people at Kmart because that is a pre-lit tree that I purchased some years ago.  Having the lights already on it really helps.  Last year I did not put up that tree.  There were a couple of reasons.  One reason was because Freighter was a year old and pretty crazy.  I did not think it would survive.

I managed to put up the tree at the cabin last year.  It is much smaller and can be decorated quickly.  Thanks goodness I left the glass bulbs off it because the dogs managed to knock it over once.

Hawk aka BrownDog asked:  I’m curious, don’t your tails knock some of those ornaments off the tree?

I have the big tree tucked in a corner and I put an easy chair to one side of it which limits access.  Plus the brown dawgs know that if they go near the tree, they will hear a crazy lady start to carry on: “My tree.  My Tree.  Stay away from my tree!”

The one at the cabin is another story.

Jodi commented:  Not a snow dog, huh? When Sampson was small he would sit outside in the snow for hours, it used to drive me nuts. Now he doesn’t spend as much time out there, and he prefers to stretch out in front of the fire.

Oh he loves snow.  Just not sitting in it for pictures.  🙂

I am glad that I am not the only one who is behind…tis the season.  But I did get my Christmas shopping done this week…whew.

The brown dawgs have a pheasant hunt scheduled for tomorrow.  We are trying a new farm closer to the cabin.  It is supposed to be cold (but not too cold for hunting).  I hope it doesn’t snow so I can use my good camera to try to get some pictures.  We are taking all three dogs so they will each get a turn.

Have a nice weekend!

  1. I usually have most of my shopping done by now, but since I’ve had to dogsit with Daisy for several weeks (and counting), I only have a few gifts so far. Panic is beginning to set in! Have a good hunt. 🙂

  2. Storm, you and I should have a Kong party! We’ll get all of our Kong toys and just play with them all day! I love my toys too! You’re never too old for a toy! — Duke

  3. What a great follow up! And lovely photos. Thanks for filling us in on the tree and the wrestling and … and … and everything!

  4. Have fun hunting, it is below zero here, so outdoor fun is currently limited. We love chase and wrestle but when it gets too rough someone usually squeals and that ends the game. We also get to wrestle in the living room sometimes if it isn’t too wild.

  5. That sure was a lot of follow-up! Thanks for joining the hop. I bet it took you ages to write this post.

I have a pre-lit tree and one of the strands is not working, I have no idea how to fix it, so I just throw additional lights on it and go. We put it in the corner and we have to gate it off because one of our dogs (I won’t squeal) likes to eat ornaments. One year she ate one of my ‘babies,’ an elf I made for my first adult tree when I was 18 years old. That miffed me off. :-0

Good luck with your hunt this weekend!!

    1. I would do the same thing, just add lights to my pre-lit tree…lol. I can only guess which one had a snack on your ornament!

  6. That food looks delicious! I’ve eaten dove that my brother and dad shot before. Before these neighborhoods and Walmart and stuff were built out here, our backyard was fair game for dove hunting. Your Christmas tree looks nice too!

  7. That Wood Duck Ramaki looks absolutely delicious! Thanks for the great follow-up. I missed a couple of your posts. Holidays are so busy.

  8. That duck dish looks delicious. The one time I tried duck I didn’t care for it, but I imagine how it is prepared could make a difference.
I hope your hunting is going well, and the weather is cooperating!
I did finish my shopping this week, and am finishing up the decorating this weekend…so I feel like I’m making some progress too! When we have a big tree some years we also have one of those pre-lit trees. They really make life easier, and less complaining from my hubby which is always a bonus! lol

  9. Enjoyed your follow-up. I’ll have to try the remake, it looks delicious.

  10. Hey Guys

I was reading that you don’t get burrs stuck in your fur! You are SO lucky! I hate those little things, they drive me nuts when I find one, I’m OCD about getting them out and tug away until I get it if Mum doesn’t come and pull it off!

    I hope you’re having a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂
