Monday morning Storm and I made an unplanned visit to the vet. All turned out well and while I was waiting to check out, a guy with a lab took one look at her and asked:
“Is that a Rhodesian Ridgeback?”
Since we have had our Chessies, people have had many guesses about what kind of dogs they are. Usually they guess chocolate lab or labradoodle. This is the first time one of our brown dawgs has been mistaken for a Rhodesian Ridgeback.
The wavy coat must throw people off.
It just so happens that there is a Rhodesian Ridgeback in our Monday conformation class. Here is a picture with that dog standing next to Freighter.
Here is what the AKC says about the Rhodesian Ridgeback:
A native of South Africa, the Rhodesian Ridgeback was bred by the Boer farmers to fill their specific need for a serviceable hunting dog in the wilds. In 1877 Reverend Helm introduced two Ridgebacks into Rhodesia where big game hunters found them outstanding in the sport of hunting lions on horseback. They raised and bred these dogs with an appreciation for their exceptional hunting qualities, the ridge on their back becoming a unique trademark. In 1950 outstanding specimens were imported to the United States and the breed was admitted to registration by the AKC in 1955.
OK now I get it. The way Storm was barking at everyone it is easy to believe that she would have no problem taking on a lion. 😆
No Weighty Issues
Of course whenever you go to the vet you have to weigh your dog. I am happy to report that despite a winter of not much training or exercise, her weight is really good. I doubt she will ever get back to the weight she was the summer she spent with a trainer, but her current weight is really good.

Something Amiss
You may have noticed that something went wrong with the images on the Linky from last week’s hop and all previous hops. I contacted the owner of the Linky site and was told that there was a problem with their server and then a hard drive failed and a back up hard drive went out and poof no images. It is a much more complex explanation and they are working to restore the images but it may be that the images are lost forever.
I am terribly sorry for this because I realize it makes posts which contain hops look strange. I have been told that the links all work and the problem is just with the images. I have also been told that all images going forward should be fine because Linky is now on a new server with extra backups in place.
I tested it out a bit and it does seem to be working, so we will proceed using the Linky tool for now.
This is the Thursday Bark And Bytes Blog Hop hosted by 2 Brown Dawgs and Heart Like A Dog.
The Barks And Bytes hop is for anything at all and all bloggers are welcome. You don’t have to be a dog blog to join the hop. Won’t you join us?

It looks like the brown dogs’ coat is thicker than the Rhodesian Ridgeback’s, which makes the RR look like the taller, leaner dog. Sorry to hear about the linky problems.
Glad that Storm got a clean bill of health and no DIET needed…phew. Pity about the linky problem. Have a tremendous Thursday.
Best wishes Molly
Hi Y’all!
Up in the mountains it seems “Labradoodle” is the common thing people think. Funny, it was a group of boy scouts we passed one day while hiking who recognized what I am!
I have my annual vet check in a couple of weeks…:( Glad Storm was okay…dieting is NO FUN!
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
You are awesome. Mom thought it was something with our computer because on lots of linkys for a couple days some images were missing, now the mystery is solved. Thank you! I guess we know Ridgebacks, so we would never think a Chessie was one, to us they are totally different, but people sometimes say the darndest things!
I suppose you and Bailie and even Katie get a lot of interesting guesses too.
Hmmmm never heard them called that either. We spayed a ridgeback on tue she was the cutest. Nellie also won’t get her groove back. Have a great Thursday.
Our first dog was a Ridgeback so not sure how anyone could get confused but it is definitely not an insult. They are really great dogs! Glad everything checked out at the vet and no diet. Prince is on a diet and he is not very happy at the moment.
Storm doesn’t really look like a ridgeback to me. I’m glad everything was OK at the vet.
So glad everything at the vet turned out okay.
I can see why people MIGHT mistake a Chessie for a Chocolate Lab, but now for a Ridgeback. We take classes with a Ridgeback and he is taller and a different color than Delilah. Not to mention the RIDGE along his back. LOL
Last Saturday night my site went down. I checked and BlueHost was up and running. Panic set in, because we all know how well I do with the technical stuff. Anyway a quick call to BlueHost and one of their servers was down, it happens. I’m not upset with Mr. Linky at all…except for that dramatic e-mail. It kind of made me chuckle.
My only complaint with Linky is that I had to contact him. It would have been nice to receive notice or post something to users about this major problem. 🙂
Storm looks great and I’m glad she got a good report at the vet’s. 🙂
I might have mistaken your dogs for chocolate Labs, but not a Rhodesian Ridgeback! When I worked at an animal shelter years ago, Rhodesians and Rhodesian mixes were somewhat common.
I can see a lot of breed mixups. I can even see them happening among the retrievers–Chessie–>chocolate Lab is a stretch, but I can see it. But Rhodesian Ridgeback? Seriously?
I get asked all the time if Silas is a Dalmatian. Umm? Does he have spots? No. Do his ears fold? No. Is he big enough? No. Still, it’s so common that I listed him as a Dalmatian cross on his city license.
Your dogs are beautiful, no matter what people mistake their breed to be.
I was wondering why the linky images weren’t working. Thanks for the explanation! I was going to contact them but now I don’t have to!
I can’t believe someone mistook her for a Ridgeback. That’s bizarre. Though both breeds are beauties.
Oh, Storm, my mommy just wants you to know that you are looking beautiful, and a lot of humans will never get back to the weight they were when they spent the summer with a trainer. 😉
I have never gotten to see a Chessie there haven’t been any in the local places we visit, but I would love to. And Storm, with the horrible winter we have had this year and the little bit of good exercise time you are looking great 🙂
Your pics are great. I don’t see the resemblance between Storm and a R.R. You dogs are simply gorgeous!
I guess I could see the mistake if you don’t see the two breeds right next to each other like in your photo, where the differences are obvious. Once in a while I’ll ask someone what breed their dog is and throw out some stupid guess that was way off…..LOL….I’ve learned now to only guess when I’m much more sure of it!
Storm looks great!! It struck me in that third photo how much darker the dog in front of Storm is than all the rest of them….is it common for Chessies to vary that much in color, similar to golden retrievers which can be very dark to very light?
I don’t think Chessies look like Rhodesian Ridgebacks at all, but they are both great breeds. Glad sweet Storm got a good report at the vet…she looks great! You all have a wonderful weekend. Hugs and nose kisses
At least Storm was mistaken for another brown hunting dog.
Hmmm… honesty, I don’t think I’d ever mistake a Chessie with a Rhodesian Ridgeback. I can see some confusion re: Lab, though. Congrats to Storm for hanging in their with her girlish figure 🙂
