Swimming is a great way to keep the dogs in shape.  It is low impact and burns a lot of calories.

Whenever we have sent a dog off for training with the professional trainer that we use, they have always come back to us in very fit condition.  That is because they train six days a week.

Training involves running and swimming and sometimes the swims are long swims.  By long swims, I am talking about swims that are 100+ yards long.  Actually that would be 100+ yards out and 100+ yards back.  The dogs may train multiple set-ups that involve long swims each day.

Even when we are doing our own training, they spend a lot of time swimming because the summer heat limits how much running they can do.  Our problem is that we do not have access to ponds where we can set up a lot of different long swims, so we take advantage of group training at our trainer’s pond when we can.

Here are some pictures from group training last Saturday.  All four of the set-ups involved long swims.  By any calculation, that is a lot of swimming.

They were tired doggies that night.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Who wouldn’t be tired after that workout?! Good doggies!! Happy doggies, too, I bet!!

  2. What a great way to spend a warm day! Have a happy Fitdog Friday! – Petnetio

  3. I agree that you were tired dogs in the evening after so much “waterwork”, but I bet you are super happy pups too :o) I’m not really the carnivore “albatross” but it’s great to watch you… with a distance to the wet stuff :o)

  4. Two of our dogs, Coco and Macha, would live in the water. Just give then a little doggie houseboat and they would never step foot on land! Outside of hunting season, pond queens!
On the big lake in New Hampshire, Macha was tired of cruising on the pontoon with the folks and in a lightning move, slipped through the top of the side gate and into the middle of Lake
Winnipesaukee, giving everyone the Chessie tail! Reverse, the humans turned retrievers! Our old boy Cullen would find a current in the river and joyfully swim in place.
Absolutely a great way to stay in shape, any dog, any age.
Hope there is water in everyone’s weekend!

  5. If I could get someone to throw bumpers for me, I might be in better shape. The Brown Dawgs’ Fitness plan sounds pretty effective!

  6. Fun! Maya wishes I would take her swimming that often. Since we just moved to Iowa, I need to find out if there is a place nearby where I can take her.

  7. We’ve only introduced Donna to the beach once… but that’s very different from a pond. No swimmable ponds for dogs here. There are doggie pools though that we can bring Donna to, but we never get around to doing that. You guys are really dedicated!

  8. That’s awesome, Delilah loves swimming but we have no where around here to swim. 🙁

    Have a great weekend.

  9. I love to swim and it is such a good workout! The brown dogs are lucky to swim so much!

  10. Nice. I so wish I had a nice pond or lake where I could swim my dogs regularly. We have a river at the local park, but it has a pretty swift current so I try not to have to dog go out too far in case they get pushed too far downstream, as the beaches are also small and set well apart, so there isn’t a good place to get out if they get pushed much.

  11. Oh what great pics, lucky pups! I so wish swimming was something that my 3 enjoyed! there’s even a lovely dog swimming area in one of our favourite parks but… nope, they aren’t interested!
    Hugs, Carrie and pups x

  12. Swimming is a touchy subject around our house. Mom loves it and swims to keep fit whereas I don’t like the water. We agree great way for dogs to keep fit though! Love Dolly

  13. I think your dogs belong in the SUPER fit Friday category. Look at those pups go! Mr. k loves the water, too, but can’t swim for the life of him. We just bought him a Scottie-safe swimming pool. Hoping to put that to good use once the sun decides to come back out. Much love, The Scottie Mom.

  14. This looks like such fun times in the water- I’d expect nothing less from you all! I’m excited to try some swimming this year too. My humans are going to help me figure out if there is a swimmer in this pug but looking at you all I know now who to reach out to if I am having trouble with my swimming skills. You all have surely mastered the art of having fun in the water!

    Love,

    bunk the pug

  15. That really is the best exercise for them, isn’t it? We hope to get the dogs out for more swimming this summer, but we don’t really have a lot of places where they can do long swims….we have to do more back and forth.

  16. Great pictures depicting a lot of fun for the dogs. Bet they were ready to rest after getting back home. Neither of our dogs like water and I miss getting to watch a dog swim and play in water. Thanks for sharing these great swimming pictures. Hugs and nose kisses

  17. Great pictures … I lay my focus on swimming at the las trainings. Therefore we I have only small ponds and rivers but we were succsesfull! … sorry about my english … (I’m from Germany 😉 )

  18. Ash loves to swim in the pool and Diesel has just learned how to swim. Teddy and Scout are scared of the water so they don’t swim. Sure wish I could get Scout in the pool to work off some extra pounds!

  19. Hi Y’all!

My turn to say “lucky you”. No swimming for me in warm weather. The other day a collie was attack by an alligator and, luckily, the owner was able to rescue it. It took 30 stitches. Fortunately, gators here are not protected, so the critter will be hunted down and killed by DNR.

    Y’all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog
