Last Saturday after group training we stuck around to do a bit more training on our own. We moved to a different pond and worked with Freighter on water blinds. Just before we left we threw him some water marks for fun.
The plan was for me to throw the training bumper up on an island in the pond, but I couldn’t get it that far so it landed in the water just on the edge with a splash.
I will let my photos tell the rest of the story.
It was the strangest thing. One minute it was there and the next I could not even spot the bumper with my camera at full zoom. It was like it vanished.
The only thing we could figure was that Freighter must have stepped on the it and it sank in the mud at the edge of the pond. We gave up and called him in without the bumper and chalked that bumper as lost to the pond. Sometimes it happens.
But wait!
By chance this past Tuesday the group was training in that pond and running water blinds. When Freighter’s turn came up he kept blowing off hubby’s casts and eventually worked his way over and came up with our lost bumper! I have said it before–that dog has some memory. We had a lot of rain Saturday night and all day Sunday, (I mean buckets), so the extra water in the pond must have dislodged the bumper from the mud.
There you go bumper lost–then bumper found!

That’s so awesome that he found the lost bumper! What a good boy!
Mom loves it when things like that happen. She sometimes forgets where she puts odor when we practice nose work, and has to rely on us to find it. Usually we do, but now and then we go back days later and find it right away.
Hi Y’all!
Freighter! You are one smart Chessie!!! (Thought I was goin’ to say “smart cookie” didn’t you?)
I’m HERE! My Human hasn’t decided on the theme or lots of other stuff and people are leavin’ me messages that they can’t find a place to comment so she’ll have to change it, but I can post again! Whoopee!
Y’all come on by,
Hawk aka BrownDog
I had no problem commenting but I am doing it while logged in at wordpress. I think you may have to change settings in Setting>Discussion.
Here is what I have (I am self hosted so it might be a bit different, but many settings will be the same for you.)
Default Article Settings…I have checked:
>Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article
>Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)
>Allow people to post comments on new articles
Other Comment Settings>Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
I unchecked: Users must be registered and logged in to comment
Then you need to set your preferences for how the comments appear.
One new thing you may like about wordpress is that their spam filter is really good. It takes a bit and has to learn what is spam so if you mark something as spam, do not delete it. Let it sit in your spam file until the filter deletes it, but check often so that friendly bloggers don’t end there by mistake.
One other box I check in>Before a comment appears>Comment author must have a previously approved comment
That way you don’t have to approve all of your pals’ comments. It will hold all others for moderation. Uncheck the other box>Comment must be manually approved
That is how I have mine set, but you might find other things work better for you. 🙂
YAY for the hunter of lost treasures!
Y’all, I’m puttin’ your code on the old Google blog ’cause my Human doesn’t have time to figure out how to do it on the WP.
You have free wordpress right? You will need it add the code for free wordpress and on “Text” screen. You can find it from the top right hand corner of your post box. it says “Visual” and “Text”…use text for this code. It will not show as a list in your post, but will pop up on another page.
haha! Playing lost and found with the bumper huh? lol Glad it was found!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
Freighter’s memory is fantastic! Ah, but to have the memory of my youth!
This is going to sound dumb, but I love how different Chessies look from one another. When at Westminster, I think I was startled that I couldn’t tell any of them apart. It’s one of the few breeds that all look alike to me. But yours and JoAnn Stancer’s look different from each other. I’m not saying it right. Anywho, Freighter is a handsome beast.
Not a stupid question. Ours is not be a cookie cutter breed. Our standard allows for a wide variety of brown color and the height/weigh standard is not rigid. I can see how to a person unfamiliar with the breed, they might all look the same because they were mostly dark brown I think and a similar size. Westminster should pull the best of the best so in that regard they should be pulling dogs that appear middle of the road and not too extreme. But I know several of the dogs and watched the judging and they were not all alike when it came to movement. 🙂
Good boy, Freighter!
Great pictures! And how funny he found the lost bumper! Good job, Freighter!
Dog memories truly are amazing! Almost rivals an elephant 😉
THAT is pretty darn funny. I thought he just couldn’t find the bumper and didn’t realize it wasn’t there at all. Was Hubby trying to handle him to the bumper or was it just a ‘play’ toss? Incidentally, the dogs still haven’t learned that I cannot throw things. One of these days I will hurt either myself or someone else in a toss. Once I whizzed it by Hubby’s head, but I’m not entirely sure there wasn’t some intent involved. 😉
I was actually throwing the bumper as a mark, but it should have been fun and easy but it was not. Hubby did try to handle him to it (or where it should have been). Unfortunately is was not there on that day.
Love these action shots!
Way to go! What a smart pup!
Awesome how he found the bumper! Great pics – I especially love the splashing ones!
way to go Freighter, he knew it was there. That same thing will happen to me and my dogs too, I too think they step on it and send it under.
That is too funny! Dogs can have amazing memories, can’t they? At least you could call him back. If Cricket’s ball gets thrown outside of the yard, she will not give up on it until we let her go get it!
Way to go, Freighter! No lost bumpers on your watch. Much love, The Scottie Mom.
Too funny! His memory and persistence is impressive, he’s not about to accept defeat!
