There is always something to practice when dog training, even for senior dogs.  In today’s post, Thunder and Storm are practicing sit.

Practicing Sit

We were throwing bumpers for Thunder and Storm, but rather than tie one out while the other retrieved, we let the one that was not retrieving sit and watch.  It is a great way to practice sit and can be very challenging for a dog who likes to retrieve.

In the picture above, Storm is holding a bumper in her mouth.  That can help a dog be steady since they already have a bumper.

Next it is Storm’s turn.

Thunder and Storm got some good practice in and had some fun too.

  1. do you think I could try it with a bumper for Easy too? or is too late now? we noticed that easy never sits on hard grounds like pavement or tiles. it has to be lawn or the carpet or a pillow… but it’s probably overdone to bring a seat cushions to dog shows, right? ;o)

  2. I think you were the smartest to turn away. Why stare down the mouth of temptation if you don’t have to?

  3. Nice job for taking that opportunity to practice the “sit”. I’ll ask Buzz to sit and stay while I throw his ball, then have him look at me instead of at his ball (which he really wants to do!!), and release him once he’s made eye contact!

  4. We practice sit while the kitty chases his toys, too. Barley often tries to look away like Storm, too 🙂 It’s no fun to watch someone else play, I guess.

  5. I used to have to make Shadow sit and wait when I threw a ball for Callie, to give Callie a chance to retrieve it because Shadow is a much faster runner. But it made Shadow a more patient girl in the long run.

  6. It looks like they did great! It can’t be easy for them to sit back and watch the other one having fun, I wouldn’t think.

  7. Honoring always needs work, and that’s a focus area with our guys. They do a nice job of honoring while on point but with retrieving, it’s a different story.
