Welcome to the This ‘N That Thursday blog hop!
It’s a little of this and a little of that and everything in between…

Thunder Works it
On Tuesday’s post I promised some video of Thunder working and flushing a couple of birds. My intent was to capture Thunder working, but lucky for me, he found some birds.
When we are out hunting with the dogs, we watch them because their body language, especially their tails, will let us know that they are on a bird. When you see their tails going, you better be ready.
If the video doesn’t play try here.
Thunder was really working to get that first bird to flush. You can see him pouncing on it. He even looked back at the hunter as if to ask, “what now?”. The cold weather had the birds sitting tight and they did not bust out as aggressively as the birds at the last farm we hunted. When the bird finally flushed it looks like the hunter missed it, or did he? More on that tomorrow.
The second bird was a nice flush, shoot and retrieve.
Freighter’s Turn
Since Freighter hunted first on our last hunt, he got to go last on this hunt. The third dog out has a harder job because the two dogs before him have already been through part of the field and there is no way to know whether the area left to hunt has any birds in it or not. Plus these birds were sitting very tight and both Thunder and Storm had to work to get them to fly.
Freighter worked and worked, but he could not come up with a bird. He did come across several field mice, but no birds. After going through the field and not finding a bird, he decided it was time to zoom around. He does not have enough experience to know that he has to slow down to find birds.
Some pictures:
We may try to get back there and take only Freighter to give him a good shot at some birds and some experience working on his own. He did well on the last hunt, but his inexperience definitely showed on this hunt.
On Tuesday’s post that I mentioned we had the farm put 8 birds out. So far we had only found 5 and our time in that field was running out. We had to bring out the big guns. We put Freighter up and ran Thunder and Storm together as a brace.
Find out how they did tomorrow.
On The Web
I am a couple of days late with this, but the brown dawgs are the Tuesday Spotlight over at Confession Of A Rescue Mom blog, here. Thanks so much to Kimberley for asking us to participate and for featuring us. 🙂
Also, I submitted a cookie recipe over at Nikitaland for the cookie exchange. They are called Mrs. Grant’s Thimble Cookies. The recipe was given to me by a dear family friend.
These are my hubby’s favorite cookies. I have been making this recipe for at least 40 years. First as a child helping Mrs. Grant, and later as an adult on my own. My sis and I attended Mrs. Grant’s 90th birthday a couple of summer’s ago. She made most of the food, including these cookies! My cookies are good, but her’s are still the best!
If you want to check out the recipe go here. Thanks to Valerie for putting this together.
And that wraps up this week’s TNT!

Thanks for some great pictures. The cookies look delicious. Good enough to delve into this computer and eat. LOL
We agree those are some great pix. Happy waggy tail on the video. We are drooling at the cookies. Have a tremendous Thursday.
Best wishes Molly
Hi Y’all!
The most fun a retriever can have! Finding a bird! Whoopee!!! and cookies to top it all off! What say? The cookies were for a person’s birthday, not for the browndawgs?!!! Really? OHhh, that batch was for the hubby…I bet he shares!
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
That dog had so much fun :), and those cookies look so so tasty.. just saying :p
I have to agree with Freighter, if you aren’t finding birds, stop wasting time and do some speed work…I figure he will slow down as he matures anyway 🙂 He looks great racing around.
That was an awesome video. I enjoyed watching Thunder work his magic and could see what you meant by the tail. 🙂
I’m off to check out that cookie recipe now…LOL I love cookies, I shall have to see if I can make it a gluten free recipe.
Enjoyed the video very much, brought back memories of my hunting days. : ) Great pictures as always, your photography is amazing. Those cookies look very yummy, I will go check out the recipe. Hugs and nose kisses
Those cookies look great; they look just like the Thumbprint Cookies. I wonder how the two recipes differ.
One question: when Freighter finds field mice, does he leave them alone or does he try to play with them?
Loved seeing that video of Thunder working, especially that super happy tail!
Great video, I tell people who hunt with me, hunting with a chessie is different than hunting with a pointing dog, you need to watch the dog and when it’s tail goes like hell it means they are going to go like hell and you need to get your running shoes on it you are going to get the bird. The other day Gambler got a shrew also because he didn’t get any birds. I’m headed out now. Have a great day. Nice story and memory about the cookies.
Ill take some of those cookies if you dont mind!!! lol Great pics and love the video to! Happy This n that Thursday!
Were #9 if you wanna come on by 🙂
Loved that video. Being able to see Thunder in action was really interesting. You are right about the tail – it’s just like Tino’s used to go – he was flushing lizards or rabbits, not birds, but it’s the same tail wag!
Thanks for posting the link back to your cookie recipe! For those of you who missed our cookie exchange this year, we’ll be doing it again next year! Just sign up to follow our blog so you don’t miss the notice! We love 2 Brown Dawgs!
Nice work Thunder and Freighter! Cookies look yummy!
Loved the video and getting to see Thunder in action!
Those cookies also look delicious! I have an old recipe for cookies that we make every year, they are my favorite, but no one else in my house likes them!
That video was so cool! It’s great to see how it’s done. Go Thunder… and Freighter, I agree that mice and running are important when your mission doesn’t happen the way you thought it would. 😉
Well, now that you’ve made us hungry – first with birds and then with cookies, we have to go try to con Jan out of some treats.
I have yet to make a single holiday cookie this year. I should fix that!
It was fun watching Thunder do his thing! That wagging tail seems to tell what a good time he is having too.
I had seen on FB that you were on the Confessions of a Rescue Mom blog, but only got a chance to skim it. I’m going to go back and read it again now, thanks for reminding me!
I love that pounce! “Go, birdie! Fly!”
MMM Those cookies look DELISH!
I am #17 if you wanna come by!
That video was fantastic!!! I absolutely loved seeing the whole thing in action. Great job Thunder!
I really enjoyed the video, it was nice to watch Thunder working the birds and retrieving.
