Up at the cabin we have some new residents.  Two groups (or rafters) of wild turkeys.  We have had the place for about 7 years now and this is the first time we have ever had resident turkeys.

They spend their time looking for food and patrolling the neighborhood.

The thing is, you never know when they might drop by for a visit.  They are like silent specters and suddenly appear.  You step out of the house and surprise, there they are.  Right there.

When you “bump” into them, they are not at all shy and take their sweet time about moving away.

They also make the dogs nuts.  Normally they don’t bark at birds, but for some reason the turkeys are a different story.  You would think a scary stranger had entered the yard.  If the dogs catch a glimpse of them, then the barking commences.  (Well in truth it is mostly Storm.)  The turkeys don’t seem to care.

Time To Move On
Time To Slowly Move On

Last weekend we were having something delivered so I was moving a couple things around, including a dog crate which I was moving to the porch.  I had my back to the yard when all of a sudden Thunder started barking.  It was not a happy bark either.  Thunder never barks so when he does, we pay attention.  I figured there was a dog or a person in the yard.

Nope.

It was those darn turkeys.

I had not noticed them because I had my back to the yard moving the crate.  But Thunder noticed them and I guess he figured he needed to protect me.

When a big brown dawg barks at a wild turkey does it fly away?

Nope.

Those darn turkeys just moved off a bit and then stood perfectly still like statues.

They kind of look like vultures standing there.  Halloween is coming, maybe they were trying out their costumes?  They better be careful because next month there is another holiday and the menu usually features turkey.

  1. “They better be careful because next month there is another holiday and the menu usually features turkey.” My thoughts exactly while reading your post!!

  2. There seem to be a lot of wild turkeys even in the suburbs here these days and we don’t know why. What we do know, is they are super ugly!

  3. We encountered some wild turkeys the other morning on our walk. Mom didn’t even think to take pics, she just turned around and dragged us home! BOL!!!

  4. Laughing about your November holiday comment. We have lots of turkeys here, but they are afraid of the dogs. Think it is not to their advantage that yours have grown so used to them! If any of ours see the dogs or us, they’re outta here – no barking necessary!

  5. We don’t have wild turkeys here. Those are pretty big birds! Are you allowed to hunt them. I am sure Storm would be up for it. BOL

  6. Ben Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird! It appears that they are now the official cabin bird? And the Chessies should bark, they are bot like any fowl they have ever seen. Plus there are lots, that is scary. Turkeys definitely taste beater than they appear. Turkey season is when? Might take two or three Chessies to retrieve!

  7. We have a rafter around us (they move about and cover quite a lot of ground) and they are very brazen. Once I had to slow the car down because I didn’t want it to get attacked. LOL

So are they legal to shoot? I’m thinking turkey can be quite expense next month, could save you some money. 🙂

  8. We get a lot of wild turkeys here, and complete families with their young too. I love them, though they do drive Daisy crazy. I used to put a tray of water out for them when the summer was really brutal, and they enjoyed it, but that made them think there was some kind of open hospitality here and they came up to the door and started knocking with their beaks! I think your dawgs are interested in them because they know turkey is so tasty… 😉

  9. We haven’t seen them in our yard lately, but we were out for a drive with Luke and saw a group, and he went NUTS.
I’ve been seeing them a lot on my way to work. They can’t make up their minds if they want to cross the road or not!
My favorite thing is when they run…they look like something out of Jurassic Park.
