Despite our backslide into a bit of winter weather, spring is in the air.  The birds think so at least.

Up at the cabin the turkeys that were ever-present last fall disappeared over the winter, but have returned this spring.  Last weekend they came by and were puffed up and strutting around.

Closer to home, the Robins returned a couple of weeks ago, but they are not the only ones.

Close Call

The other morning I let Thunder and Storm out one last time before I left for work.  I opened the door and told them “Go out.  Go potty.”  Normally they go out and kind of saunter around the yard.  This time Thunder’s nose went up and he took off running.  I have not seen him move that fast in a while.  What could have him so interested?

A skunk?  We have been smelling them more and more in the neighborhood as we do every spring.  Oh I hope not.  It was broad daylight so it was likely not a skunk.

A squirrel?  They are always in the trees chattering at the dogs and every once in a while actually venture into the yard to tease them.  No it wasn’t a squirrel.

It was…

A Pair Of Mallards
A Pair Of Mallards

It was a pair of Mallard ducks which were a complete surprise to me.  I had not expected to find a couple ducks waddling through my neighborhood yard.

Thunder bounded to them.  He might be 10 years old as of last week, but he can still move when ducks are involved.  Storm also noticed them and was right on Thunder’s heels.

Silly ducks.  Don’t you know a couple of old hunting dogs live here?

Just as Thunder got to them, they flew off into the next yard.

Whew that was a close call.  I certainly do not need Thunder to retrieve a living duck and bring it to me.

  1. So glad that they got away. Silly ducks. Hopefully they learned their lesson to not come back to that yard.

  2. A live duck in the kitchen might have been just the sort of excitement you need on a cold spring morning! Isn’t it nice to see the old dogs still have some pep in their step 😉

  3. The dumb ducks always come into the neighborhood in the spring. Since they can fly, they are pretty safe.

  4. Those ducks are pretty dumb! Reminds me of when a momma squirrel built her cozy little nest in our yard – a yard with a beagle in it! Not good!!

    1. We constantly had robins building nests in the highest traffic areas of our yard under the deck, and once in the wood pile. That time when our cat Samantha escaped outdoors…it was not pretty. 🙁

  5. That was a close call! We don’t typically have those kinds of close calls. Our back yard is fenced and one time a deer did jump it without me knowing and I did let the dogs out. I think I was more surprised because they probably knew. 🙂
