Ruling the roost is not just for chickens. In our house ruling the roost refers to Storm.
Storm thinks when she is out hunting all the birds belong to her. It doesn’t matter if she is hunting with other dogs, the birds are hers.
The same goes for beds. Storm thinks all the beds are hers. If she wants a bed, she will make a fuss until she gets her way.
The same goes for toys.
Last weekend I had Thunder and Storm out for some playtime in the yard.
I threw the ball.
I released Thunder and Storm to fetch the ball.
They arrived at the exact same time.
Then there is a scuffle for the ball.
Storm wrestles it away.
And dashes away with her ball.
Meanwhile Thunder is left to try to figure out what happened.
Storm says it is all part of ruling the roost.

“All balls are Storm’s balls.” It’s a simple enough rule. One day Thunder will learn.
There’s one in every crowd, and I wonder if it is more often a female? Cricket, even though she is the smallest, rules around here. Though Luke doesn’t give in to her quite as easily as Sheba (if he can get the ball, he holds onto it), and that frustrates her to no end! 🙂
Hahahaha! It’s true in our house too! Ziva is our little queen of the castle. 🙂

Routine here! Did you say Macha and Storm have the same genes? Several summers ago this “habit” was an embarrassment. We were at a Great Black Swamp Gun Dog fun day at Lee’s pond. no dog, no breed could outdo Chessie girl (secret smile!) Her retrieves were phenomenal, each tennis ball, every tennis ball, She increased her chances by racing to the pavilion and soaring halfway to the target! Macha, Warrior Queen! After she proved her point, she would pass the ball to Diva, the Golden resident Queen, just a courtesy.
